Over 500 legal professionals, friends and family members will attend this year’s Induction Ceremony to celebrate this memorable accomplishment. The ceremony will take place Friday, March 1, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm CT at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center — 1900 University Ave, Austin, Texas. This is the inaugural year for two specialty areas — Child Welfare Law starts off with 45 newly Board Certified attorneys and Property Owners Association Law launches with 32. TBLS will also honor three paralegals in the new paralegal Oil, Gas and Mineral Law specialty area. The 2018 class is composed of 266 attorneys and 35 paralegals. If you’re one of TBLS’ honorees this year, this is an event you don’t want to miss. Congratulations to all those who have reached this career milestone!

This year’s keynote speaker is Judge David Newell, from the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Board Certified in Criminal Law and Criminal Appellate Law, he is licensed by the State Bar of Texas and admitted to practice before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He is a recipient of the C. Chris Marshall Award for Distinguished Faculty from the Texas District and County Attorney’s Association and has served as the chairman of various editorial boards. ® Certification MattersRetired Texas Supreme Court Justice Philip W. Johnson will be presented the prestigious John F. Sheehy, Jr. Distinguished Attorney Award during the ceremony. The award is given annually by the TBLS Board of Directors in recognition of an attorney that has been Board Certified for more than 25 years, shown commitment to serving the public and justice system, advanced the standards of the legal profession and has been the epitome of outstanding professional ethics and civility. Justice Johnson, who retired last year after serving 20 years as a Texas judge, served as the Texas Supreme Court’s liaison to TBLS over many years and was crucial in helping it to fulfill its mission of serving the public and raising the standards of the legal profession. He is Board Certified in personal injury and civil trial law and is a member of the American Law Institute. Johnson also served on several committees of the State Bar of Texas, is a member of the College of the State Bar, a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and is a past president of the Lubbock County Bar Association. A U.S. Air Force pilot and Vietnam War veteran, Johnson received his law degree from Texas Tech University School of Law and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1975.

TBLS will also honor David Dickson, former TBLS chair, with this year’s Tom Garner Award. The annual Tom Garner Award is presented to a TBLS volunteer who best epitomizes the best ideals of voluntary service by their knowledge, dedication, hard work and integrity. David has been involved with TBLS for more than 30 years. In 1983, he became one of only 57 attorneys in the state to receive TBLS Board Certification in three areas of real estate law — Commercial, Farm & Ranch, and Residential Real Estate. For all his career, Mr. Dickson has worked on behalf of the legal profession serving as director of the State Bar of Texas, serving on the TBLS board and two terms as chairman of the Professionalism Committee of the State Bar of Texas.

Justice Jeff Brown will administer the Oath this year. He has served at all three levels of the Texas judiciary and has been on the Texas Supreme Court since 2013.

In addition, Pierpont Communication’s Account Supervisor and media specialist, Sylvester Palacios, Jr., will be sharing best practices in PR and marketing for new Board Certified attorneys.
