The 1st Philippine Conference on Research in CSR September 1, 2011 is the day that marks a very significant milestone for CRI – the Institute with its partners successfully organized the 1st Philippine Conference on Research in CSR. Gathering corporations and NGOs at the UST Graduate School TARC Auditorium, the Conference enabled the participants to assess their CSR activities from the experiences of nationally and internationally renowned speakers. The key speaker for the 1st Conference was Dr. Wayne Visser, who is an Author and, the Founder of the think-tank CSR International. He shared CSR’s latest developments highlighted in his books, The Age of Responsibility: CSR 2.0 and the New DNA of Business. The Conference also included presentations of Mr. JJ Moreno, Dr. Benito Teehankee, Ms. Lydia P. Sarmiento, and Prof. Francisco L. Roman, Jr., DBA. The success of the 1st Conference resulted in The Sponsors’ decision to make the Conference an annual activity.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), I believe, is a lifelong responsibility that companies should strictly adhere to a holistic approach to take care of the environment around them. “For every line you draw, there must be a story: behind each design should be a narrative. If you do a good job, think of the beneficiaries. If you do a lousy job, think of the sufferers.” Each project must strike a balance between the People, the Planet Earth, and lastly, the Economy. List of Resource Persons
MR. THOMAS THOMAS is the CEO of the ASEAN CSR Network. He is also the Executive Director of the Singapore
Compact for Corporate Social Responsibility and Honorary Professor of Corporate Social Responsibility with the
Nottingham Business School of Nottingham University. He served in the trade union movement as the General Secretary
of the Singapore-Shell. Mr. Thomas was also a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP).
MS. PACITA U. JUAN has been in social development since 1999 working on advocacies first of which is coffee, then later
embracing environment and sustainability. She runs a social enterprise called the ECHOstore sustainable lifestyle
established in 2008—the first specialty store of its kind in the Philippines.
DR. ALVIN P. ANG served as the Former Director for the UST Research Cluster for Cultural, Educational and Social Issues.
He is a faculty member of the Economics Department, under the Faculty of Arts and Letters teaching Macroeconomics,
Public Finance, and Health Economics.
DR. ARLEN ANCHETA is the Director for the UST Research Cluster for Cultural, Educational, Social Issues. She is also a
faculty member of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, University of Santo Tomas and is presently the coordinator for Asian
Studies, Faculty of Arts and Letters and adviser of the UST organization EARTH UST.
ENGR. ALEJANDRO TEVES ESCAÑO is an astute entrepreneur and considered a stalwart in the field of business
particularly in the area of agro-industrial projects. He is the Chairman of the Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food
(PCAFI), Chairman of Stakeholders for the Enhancement of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (SECAFF).
MR. DAVID L. BALANGUE is the Former Chairman and Managing Partner at SyCip, Gorres, Velayo & Co. (SGV) since
January 2004 and as a Partner since 1982. He is currently a Member of the Board of Directors of Trans-Asia Oil and
Energy Development Corporation. Mr. Balangue received his MBA from Northwestern University Graduate School of
Management as a Distinguished Scholar awardee.
MR. JONATHAN JUAN “JJ” DC MORENO is currently a Managing Consultant at the Palladium Group Inc., a global leader
in strategy execution consulting founded by Harvard Business School professors and “Balanced Scorecard” developers
Drs. Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton. Mr. Moreno served as the President and CEO of the Institute of Corporate
Directors (ICD). He received his MBA from the Asian Institute of Management and Melbourne Business School.
PROFESSOR FRANCISCO L. ROMAN has been with AIM since 1970. He is currently teaching in the W.SyCip Graduate
School of Business (WSGSB). Until September 2007, he served as the Associate Dean of the Asian Center for
Entrepreneurship (ACE). He received his DBA from the Harvard Business School, in International Business, with a sub-
specialization in Agribusiness in developing countries.
DR. CATHERINE Q. CASTAÑEDA is the head of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) – National Capital Region.
Prior to her current post, she was also the Director of the Office of Programs and Standards and the Director of the
Office of Student Services of CHED.
DR. LUZ S. ALMEDA is the recently appointed Director IV of the Department of Education – National Capital Region.
Prior to her current post, she was Director IV for Region X from November 2009 to July 2012 and Region XII from January
2006 to November 2009.

CSR RESEARCH NETWORK
(CRN)
CRI includes the CSR Research Network as one of its main programs. The CRN is vital in furthering the CSR Research agenda in the Philippines and throughout Asia as it is composed of select group of universities and other tertiary institutions interested in advancing CSR Research. These institutions will serve as venues for Research, Teacher and Student Training, Case Research, and related work. The BCYF Casewriting Program has resulted in the preparation of training materials. Already twenty local and international cases have been prepared for BCYF by Dr. Frankie Roman. .

INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE AND DEVELOPMENT (ISED)
The ISED is a Unit of the BCYF that aims to be part of the solution in addressing social problems by applying entrepreneurial principles. ISED promotes Good Governance, Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility, and Social Work through Social Entrepreneurship. The Institute focuses on two areas: (a) sustainable development specifically through a business model for the indigenous peoples (IPs); and (b) the introduction to the country’s vocational-technical schools of the possibilities involved with those who venture into Social Entrepreneurship. Focusing on the IPs, one of the Institute’s initial projects is organizing the “Kephedan Program” intended to help the Ifugaos. “Kephedan” is a Kalanguya term which means “wellness or goodness”, and it aims to create the experience of living with the natives of Ifugao. Currently, Kephedan focuses on the Ifugao Homestay Project (IHP) which will offer opportunities for living with the Ifugaos.
