PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America Our Mission

Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer organization that inspires a passion for and commitment to the land, the people, and the future of Israel. Through education, advocacy, and youth development, and its support of medical care and research at Hadassah Medical Organization, Hadassah enhances the health and lives of people in Israel, the United States and worldwide.

You can register for your very own free "myHADASSAH" account at http://www.hadassah.org/myhadassah/ where you will find customized membership and leadership content. Please bookmark the HGA page at http://www.hadassah.org/atlanta and the Southeastern Region page at http://www.hadassah.org/southeastern and visit both frequently.

Spring is my favorite season. Everything that was dormant and dull becomes fresh, alive and full of color. I see our chapter Board, that has been working for months on certain projects, starting to bloom.

To name one: Our Young Women’s Networking Initiative is holding its first in a series of networking events. These gatherings will take place in venues all over Atlanta, with speakers who are successful in their fields, who will discuss how they got where they are and provide advice and answer questions. It will be networking at its best: our women can socialize with each other, learn, and exchange thoughts and ideas. A hearty todah rabah to Renee Rosenheck and Julie Beneveniste for working so diligently to get this amazing project off the ground. It’s wonderful to see our young women working together and pumping new energy into the chapter.

Throughout the month of May, our Young Women’s Networking Initiative and our Hadassah groups worked together to collect food for the Community Food Bank, bringing canned and non-perishable items to programs or donating through Amazon. This is how the Women Who Do tackle the hunger many children will face once school is out and they don’t receive the subsidized or free breakfasts available during the school year. A shout-out to Cathy Manne, who set up our account with Amazon and the Food Bank. Why shlep cans when you can push a button?

Although my dancing shoes are put away, at least until next year’s Best Strokes extravaganza, our reaching out to the medical community never ends. Thanks to Sheila Dalmat, who made the introductions, I am ecstatic to announce our partnership with the JScreen/Emory Team. They are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced in genetic screening, counseling, and practice. Our partnership is very important to our membership and community. Stay tuned for the community informational panel about this initiative, coming soon; and check out the article in this e-news.

In November our chapter will present our first Artisan Bazaar. All hail Gail Golden, coordinating artisans/vendors communitywide to display and sell their works of art. It’s a wonderful way to spotlight all the talent around us and to purchase holiday gifts – a win-win. Interested in participating as an artist/vendor or in just helping out? Call the HGA office, and we’ll hook you up!

Interested in gaining leadership skills? Our chapter VPs of Leadership, Marni Hoffman and Cheryl Gordon, are gathering some of our top mentors to lead sessions in our Leadership Training Session scheduled for August. This is a great opportunity to integrate new skills with established ones, meet women chapter-wide, and find out how your talents add to the HGA success.

Lots of planting, lots of growing. I cannot express how awed I am by you Women Who Do. When I represent our chapter, whether at community meetings with other lay leaders, in meetings with renowned medical researchers and doctors, or at my local bagel shop when someone recognizes me from an article in the newspaper, I do so with pride. I explain that I am merely one cog in the well-oiled machine that is Hadassah Greater Atlanta. I represent the Women Who Do. What makes us so unique and successful in raising money for our initiatives, spreading information to our community, and doing acts of kindness is our can-do attitude, our mentoring, our leadership, our willingness to roll up our sleeves to get a job done; our ability to multi-task; our ability to rise above the noise to see goals. Besides kvelling over my kids, I kvell over what we do. Thank you!

Let’s keep doing what we’re doing: plant more seeds and see the garden growing. It’s a beauty!

B’shalom,

Michele Weiner-Merbaum

President, Hadassah Greater Atlanta

HGA in the ATL: JScreen/Emory

Hadassah Greater Atlanta is partnering with JScreen/Emory for a very important BRCA screening and genetic counseling pilot project beginning in July. Knowledge is power. We want you to have the knowledge to make important health decisions for yourself and your Jewish Ashkenazi family and friends! Hadassah Greater Atlanta, led by Health Professionals and Metulla Goups, is partnering with JScreen at Emory University to create awareness for The PEACH BRCA Study. Why? Eastern European Ashkenazi Jews are 10 times more likely to have the BRCA gene. So What? Having the BRCA gene puts you at higher risk for cancers, including breast (women and men) and ovarian, and at increased risk for pancreatic and prostate cancers. What Can You Do? Sign up for the FREE screening beginning in July -- saliva test and two follow-up surveys. BRCA is no longer affecting only grandmothers -- younger women and men are subject. Learn more. Stay informed. ... www.jscreen.org/brca

GROUP ACTIVITIES Hadassah Greater Atlanta is comprised of five groups and the Associates. Although the chapter sponsors a number of programs, including the "Check It Out®” breast health awareness and education program for teens and the Marian F. Perling Chesed Student Awards, most of our day-to-day are conducted at the group level.

Hadassah Greater Atlanta women, while members of the chapter, are generally affiliated with a group. Our groups are organized roughly according to age, location or profession/interest, although all members are welcome at any chapter or group meeting or event. No matter your preference, at least one of Hadassah Greater Atlanta’s groups is right for you.

HADASSAH: THE POWER OF WOMEN WHO ADVOCATE Advocacy is central to Hadassah's mission. From supporting the creation of the State of Israel and selling war bonds, to championing stem cell research and women's health equity, Hadassah has a proud history of advocacy on issues important to women and the Jewish community. REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS This month we saw an unprecedented assault on women’s reproductive rights, here in GA and then in Alabama, where the most restrictive law ever was passed. These laws show a total lack of understanding of the female reproductive system. The high maternal death rates in GA was just one of the many factors that were not considered. An ugly irony about the new Alabama law – which does not even allow for abortion in cases of rape or incest – is that it calls for prison sentences of 99 years for doctors who perform abortions, many times longer than those given to the rapists who might have caused the unwanted and traumatic pregnancy. Here are some key points from the recent National Hadassah statement on the issue: Hadassah Commitment to Affirming Our Commitment to Reproductive Rights, from President Ellen Herskin “On the heels of Mother’s Day and National Women’s Health Week, we learn about the brazen assaults on women’s reproductive health across the country; and, once again, Hadassah is speaking out. For 30 years, Hadassah has, and always will, unequivocally stand for women’s reproductive rights and empowering women with the knowledge to make critical health decisions for themselves and their families. For decades Hadassah members and leaders mobilized for reproductive freedom – passing policy statements, advocating at the state and national level, and attending rallies around the country. Today, with the support of Hadassah’s National Executive Committee, I reaffirm Hadassah’s unwavering commitment to ensure that women – not elected officials or employers – control their own bodies and family planning decisions. Reproductive health choices, based on full and accurate medical information and guidance, must be made in accordance with a woman’s own religious, moral and ethical values. Join us in speaking out. Urge your federal officials to support women’s preventive health and proactive reproductive rights legislation. Stay informed about state and local policies and get involved – as individuals and with Hadassah groups – in these community efforts. As legal actions present challenges to the constitutional protections of Roe v. Wade, we will inform you about Hadassah’s involvement in relevant amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) briefs in support of our policies and other opportunities to take action.”

Support our Hadassah Advocacy Committee, chaired by Anne Grabois-Davis. For more information or to join the committee, contact her at 678/591-7823 or [email protected].

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

Notes from Nan

An organization is only as good as its members, working cooperatively together to accomplish its goals. You may have heard this quote many times, but it’s the truth. That’s why Hadassah groups are so supportive of each other and so successful. Our members are the heart of the organization. Each month we will hear from one of our five groups on how their membership team is working. Here is the list of all the Membership VPs for 2019. Don’t you want to join their team? Etz Aviv Naomi Bienfeld and Judy Epstein Health Professionals Marge Feldman Ketura Linda Ames and Sandy Bailey Metulla Lana Krebs and Linda Lieberman Mount Scopus Susan Berkowitz, President This month we are hearing from the Health Professionals Group: Linda Gerow, President, and Marge Feldman, Membership VP. Here are some remarks they want to share with the other groups. We share the description of our group at all events and on all flyers, since in the past we have had women state that they were not health professionals and not eligible to join Hadassah or our group. We are always welcoming to members at our events, and we also encourage them to bring guests, both Hadassah members and non-members. We keep a list of attendees, including non-members who have come to our events, and always include them in future event invites. All our events have a “greeter,” who ensures that all guests feel welcome, often introducing them to members who help them to “feel the love.” We follow up with guests with calls to see how they enjoyed the event and to ask if they have an interest in joining. We keep in touch with members by calling them and asking them to join in an event or asking if they can/will take on a volunteer job, even a small one for those with limited time.

Do you have great proven methods for attracting new members to and keeping current members in Hadassah? Share them with Hadassah Greater Atlanta Membership VP Nancy Schwartz at [email protected].

Charitable Gift Annuity: Turn Your Generosity into Lifetime Payments for You or a Loved One

A charitable gift annuity is a popular way to make a gift to Hadassah and enjoy payments for yourself at the same time. You make a gift of cash or securities of $5,000 or more and will receive a fixed amount quarterly for the rest of your life. The payout rate is fixed when you establish the annuity and remains the same for your lifetime. After your lifetime, the remainder of the annuity is used by Hadassah to support its lifesaving mission. If you yourself do not need the funds, you may establish an annuity as a gift for one or two important people in your life. If you do not need the money today, but are planning ahead for your retirement years, consider a deferred charitable gift annuity. You establish the gift annuity now and elect to start receiving payments at least one year in the future (so long as you are at least 60 years old when the payments start). You can also establish a deferred gift annuity to benefit a loved one. The longer the deferral period, the higher the payout rate and the larger the charitable deduction.

A charitable gift annuity with Hadassah...

♥ will provide you and/or a loved one with fixed payments that are partially tax-free for your life expectancy (or combined life expectancies), regardless of market conditions

♥ may allow you to claim a federal income tax charitable deduction on a portion of your gift in the year you establish the annuity

♥ may allow you to reduce your capital gains tax liability if you establish the annuity with appreciated securities

♥ will help to secure Hadassah's future, and your own

"360 Degrees of Healing, The Full Circle Campaign"

David Ben Gurion asked Hadassah to build a new, modern medical center in West Jerusalem that would be the finest in the Middle East. In June 1961, a magnificent hill of healing opened in Ein Kerem overlooking the majestic Judean hills. The centerpiece of the campus was the Round Building. Our mothers, grandmothers, aunts and many, many others built this incredible medical center, and now it our turn to expand and modernize it.

In July 2017, HWZOA committed to try to raise $91.2 million to renovate the Round Building. This is the first phase of Hadassah’s vision to reimagine the Ein Kerem Campus and HMO. It’s about compassion; it’s about healing; it’s about life; it’s also about a 360 degree vision in a changing world.

Find brochures, video (https://vimeo.com/252057412), information and ideas in myHadassah (http://www.hadassah.org/myhadassah/resources/fundraising-360-degrees-of.html) to help support 360 Degrees of Healing, The Full Circle Campaign for HMO!
