PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This year, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) brings the courses Agriculture-Based

Design, Traditional Market and Community Development project (Study Case: Batik) to

Inherit program. The participants are expected to obtain insight and knowledge regards

with the local nature and community development. There are plenty of creative

industries that need to be raised on the surface, in this term are straw craft and Batik.

Therefore, this program aims to present the local potential on creating global quality

products. UNS will also take us to the traditional market in order to figure out the activity

of Indonesian shopping groceries runs out including the daily transaction over there.

Indonesian is an archipelago country that has various cultural heritage. The

Indonesian heritage is not only in tangible form but also intangible one as well. The

multeity of Indonesian heritage includes artifacts, performing art, ritual, traditional food

and medicine, music instrument, clothes, traditional craftmanship, and so on. Thus, these

number of cultures should be preserved in way of recognition and maintaining inter-

generational transfer of knowledge.

Universitas Airlangga in collaboration with Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS)

conduct an international program implementing culture-based program. The program is

called as In-herit (Indonesian Heritage). This year, Universitas Airlangga raises health

science issue in term of Indonesian traditional medicine. Participants will learn about

how traditional medicine contributes to Indonesian health all this time. They are also

expected to acknowledge and obtain new insights about the various of Indonesian

traditional medicine including massage, herbal herbs, traditional food and scrubs. As for

the series of the activity, this program will provide online lectures and also lively practices

in order to present the precious opportunities for the participants learning based on the

reliable instructors directly.

ISSUANCE OF E-CERTIFICATE AND ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPT Ÿ Inherit is a credit earning program. The credit earning will be

stated on transcript in the form of hours

those who participating throughout the program, submitting the

assignments, and completing the online survey form

Ÿ The assignments will be delivered by the lecturer upon the class

Ÿ The participants should have minimum of 80% of attendance to be

Traditional medicine has been practiced in the world for centuries.

Traditional medicine refers to health practices, approaches,

knowledge and beliefs incorporating plant, animal and mineral

based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual techniques and

exercises, applied singularly or in combination to treat, diagnose

and prevent illnesses or maintain well-being. Passed along from

generations to generations, some of the traditional treatment on

some region has gaining more popularity and is readily being

incorporated into modern day health care, not only in the

developing world but also in the developed countries.

2. Indonesian Massage Course

Traditional Massage is commonly an ancient healing system that

combines broad and targeted stimulation and manipulation of

energy inside the body. It is believed as combination of art, science

and culture. And as a non-medicinal remedy and manual therapy,

it involves bodily manipulation in which the practitioner helps re-

balance patient's body, energy and structure or posture of human

body. The Indonesian Traditional massage, namely Javanese

Massage, Balinese Massage or Borneo massage, whereas the part

of cultural hereditary inheritance, thus believed to enhance health,

healing illness, as well as maintaining beauty and fineness. The

traditional massage usually uses specific massage oils and

essential oils with distinctive scents.

3. Indonesian Traditional Remedies

Traditional medicine and herbal formulations have been used by

humans for healing and treating various diseases and disorders.

One of Indonesia's cultural heritage is herbal medicine or

commonly known as "Jamu" (Indonesian Herbal Remedies). Jamu

is the Indonesian traditional herbal medicine that has been

practiced for centuries in Indonesian community to maintain good

health and to treat diseases. Various formulations are made based

on a reference to the recipe of an ancient royalty cultural heritage,

or as a household remedy, or even known as a "folklore medicine"

which were commonly used. These traditional formulations are

believed to be beneficial as immunomodulator, expectorant,

antipyretic and antacid properties respectively.

4. Javanese Lulur

Javanese Lulur is a royal ritual originally began in the palaces of

Yogyakarta (on the island of Java, Indonesia) around the 17th

century. This traditional Javanese health and beauty rituals have

been used by ladies of the Royal family each day for 40 days prior

her wedding remove dead skin cells, to cleanse, smooth, soften

and rejuvenate their skin. This process is an exfoliation and

polishing of the body that leaves the skin soft, supple and shiny.

Javanese Lulur is a paste made up of herbs and other ingredients

such as Pandanus leaves, Jasmine oil, Roses, Turmeric, Curcuma

and Rice powder. Combined, they bring back the true feel of Jamu

with its exotic scent.

Course Description

Agriculture is the sector that supports the human’s primary need. Besides providing food, some of agriculture’s side products have been used by the community, and some of them have been wasted. In rice farming, straw is the secondary product of these activities. It has the potential to be utilized both practically and ritually. This session will talk about the potential use of straw and agricultural culture activities held in Delanggu District, Indonesia, and Isumi, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

Course Description

Batik is a potential textile in Surakarta and its surroundings since the 18th century. And the culture of Batik has been engraved in the local people's daily life. There are several batik-making communities in this region. They use the products as utilities, ritual support, and commodity products. Through these communities, the people apply various values such as social, natural, and mythological. Through several activists, these values are preserved and developed and preserved. Therefore, in the third session, we will focus on the activities in the development of batik communities in Surakarta and Sragen.
