The “I AM” Statements of Jesus Lenten Sermon Series

The season of Lent comes each year, and Lent invites us into a deeper, more intentional walk with God. Why now? Why this spring? On the horizon is Good Friday and Easter, the highpoint of the Christian year. Shaped by those impending events, the church has encouraged the forty days before Easter as a time for study, reflection, and spiritual growth.

Daily Devotions To that end, we are inviting all our worshippers to participate in a reading of a daily devotional. Called the “Lenten Challenge,” you can read more about it in another section of this newsletter and other church communications. Some who have signed up have never done such a thing. Others have been doing daily devotionals for many years. Regardless of your background, this Lent there’s an opportunity for personal growth, and I ask that you take advantage of it.

Daily devotions allow for personal growth and a deepening of the faith. They also help shape our identity. Consider the following statement:

A Congregation of the Evangelical Church in America March 2019

What we think about ourselves does a great deal to shape our outlook on life and living. Consider the following, which I have heard others say, both positive and negative:

I am frustrated. I am resourceful. I am hopeful. I am loveable and capable. I am unlovable. I am afraid. I am fed-up. I am a hot mess. I am resourceful. I am a creative. I am negative. I am blessed.

Even though these are statements about one’s self, these words shape and influence how we picture ourselves, and subsequently shape how we relate to others.

Sermon Series: Jesus says “I AM” As we might have “I Am….” statements such as those listed above, there is another voice in our ear, that of Jesus himself. In the Gospel of John, Jesus makes a series of self-defining “I Am” statements. In engaging in metaphors and principles, Jesus conveys to us important aspects of his identity. This Lent, each Sunday we will engage these words of Jesus. What follows is a schedule:

Sunday “I AM” Theme March 10 The Door March 17 Bread of Life March 24 Light of the World March 31 True Vine

Sunday “I AM” Theme April 7 The Good Shepherd April 14 Palm Sunday: The Passion according to John April 21 Easter, I am the Resurrection and the Life

Each of these statements give us a glimpse of how Jesus relates to our lives. Most, but not all, are metaphors. The goal of this series is to gain a deeper understanding of Jesus. If our understanding of Jesus grows, our confidence in how he works in our lives also will grow. That is my hope and goal for every person who visits our congregation.

I pray that this Lent would be a time of deepening our spiritual roots. As we reflect on our own identity in daily devotions and in worship, we also encounter Christ, who brings his transforming grace to our lives.

Lutheran Services of Georgia is now InspiritusSame Services. Same Mission, Vision and Values. New Name.

Lutheran Services of Georgia has changed its name to Inspiritus. The Board of Directors felt the new name Inspiritus better embodies the essence of the organization’s mission of guiding individuals and families on a path from surviving to thriving. The new name is derived from the word “inspirit,” which means to fill with strength or courage. Inspiritus emboldens individuals and families to find their courage, inner strength and resilience so that they can lead a more fulfilling life.

For more information on the change, visit weinspirit.org/name-change.

Bishop's Election — Afternoon of Discussion

Our Bishop Julian Gordy has asked that the churches of the Southeastern Synod engage in intentional discernment in preparation for the election of a new bishop, taking place this spring at the annual synod assembly in Chattanooga. To that end, all Savannah area Lutherans are invited to a late afternoon of discussion. Topics include what the Bible says about bishops, what qualities synods might look for in a bishop, and a special video address from Bishop Gordy. Participants will invited to submit questions they think should be asked of candidates for bishop.

If you would like to attend the discussion on Sunday, March 3 at 4 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer on Wilmington Island, please RSVP to Dave Rasmussen ([email protected]).

In Memoriam Thomas Steve Richardson

December 8, 1948 ~ February 10, 2029

Our dear brother in Christ Ret. CW4 Thomas Steve Richardson, 70, passed away peacefully in his Savannah home on Sunday, February 10, 2019.

Tom was born on December 8, 1948, in Newberry County, SC to Thomas Leon Richardson and Margaret Alene Dowd Richardson. He was married to Susan Cousins Richardson of Chapin. They were blessed with many years together, and celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on December 27, 2018.   Tom is survived by his wife and his only daughter, Laurie Ann (Nick) Sterguis, and his two grand-daughters, Annie Lee (Stephen) Smith and Lauren Savannah Richardson, his son-in-law Nicholas Sterguis and grandson-in-law Stephen Smith. He was preceded by his parents, his fraternal grandparents, Veta Lenora Kibler Richardson and James Leo Richardson, and his maternal grandparents, Eva Shealy Dowd and Wilbur Dowd.

Tom graduated from Mid Carolina High School in 1967, after which he attended Georgia Military College, Richland Tech, and Fayetteville Tech. In June of 1969 he voluntarily joined the U.S. Army and graduated from Flight School in June of 1970 at Fort Rucker in Alabama. In August of the same year he was deployed to Vietnam where he later was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for using his helicopter to shield an incoming Medivac, thereby providing them enough time to retrieve the injured soldiers on the ground. During Tom’s time in the military, he was stationed at multiple locations including Fort Bragg, Korea (twice), Fort Jackson, Finthen Army Airfield, and Hunter Army Air Field. Tom was also a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Savannah, Georgia, the Grand Lodge AFM of South Carolina, and the Alee Temple. While at Messiah Lutheran, Tom served as Chairman of the Property Committee for at least six years and could be found handling the A/V system almost every Sunday.

A Celebration of Life service was held Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church in Chapin, SC. Tom wanted to be remembered for the joy he had while on earth and asked that his friends and family gather in celebration instead of mourning after his passing. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the ALS Foundation of your choice, for those who feel called to do so.

May God grant Susan and Laurie and the family and friends blessed memories of Tom and resurrection peace through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Lent is the period of 40 days before Easter (April 21).  In 2019, Lent begins on March 6 (Ash Wednesday), and goes through April 17. For many years, members of Messiah Lutheran have gathered together in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday evenings for dinner. This is a great time for fellowship, learning, and laughter — not to

mention a night of not having to figure out what’s for dinner!  The evenings begin at 6:00 p.m. with supper. At about 6:25 or so — we're flexible on time — the dramas (see below) begin! Then we finish by 7:00 or 7:05 pm. Please join us for Wednesday night Lenten Suppers on the dates shown below.  You can sign up on the kiosk to attend (but do come even if you haven’t signed up!) or to provide part of a supper.

March 6: Ash Wednesday. This will be a Pot Luck Dinner. Smoked Boston Butt is on the menu, and members are asked to bring a side or desert. Ash Wednesday Service will follow at 7:00.

March 13: Men’s Group (Soup & Sandwich) March 20: Men’s Group (Soup & Sandwich) March 27: Men’s Group (Soup & Sandwich)

It's time to dust off your acting skills!  Back by popular demand are Lenten Dramas conceived, directed, and produced by Joy Olson! Beginning Wednesday, March 13, we will be performing five new dramas based on five of Jesus' parables.  The dramas will be (not necessarily in this order):

The Prodigal Son The Good Samaritan The Lost Sheep The 10 Maidens and Their Oil Lamps The Wedding Banquet

This year we are going to attempt to sign up all or most of the actors/actresses on Sunday mornings, March 3 and 10, in the Fellowship Hall.  There will be a table with lists of needed characters for each Wednesday night.  Please sign up for one or more! If you think you might be available please sign up, if you have to cancel later, that is okay.

We have some new members this year and just to allay any fears, there are no lines, no rehearsals, and basically no costumes: just a scarf, headpiece, necklace, something to give the illusion of a costume. These dramas are not difficult or long.   The dramas are a lot of fun, and sometimes everyone in attendance takes part in the drama.  It is fun and insightful, and we usually come away with a different perspective about the story and we know our church family better for having joined with them in the dramas and the following discussion.

If you have any questions, please talk to Joy Olson (912-660-7978; [email protected]).

News from the Education and Discipleship Ministry Barbara Tinker, Chairman

We are currently viewing a series entitled “BELIEVE ~ Living the Story of the Bible to Become Like Jesus” by Randy Frazee. Randy Frazee is the senior minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. He teaches and leads in partnership with pastor and author Max Lucado.

Come and “experience a transformative journey through the Bible by exploring essential beliefs, practices, and virtues that

every Christian needs to know and live. You will learn how the story of the Bible helps you think, act, and be more like Jesus by examining key questions, studying scripture, and learning practical ways to apply the concepts to everyday life.”

So, grab a friend and a cup of coffee and join us for Sunday Morning Discipleship at 10:20 a.m. in the conference room. The discussions are always interesting and you will be amazed how your faith grows when you share it!

Messiah Youth (middle and high) will meet at 10:20 a.m. each Sunday in March.

The Monday Morning Women's Bible Study group will be doing a five-week Kerygma program entitled “Hosanna: A Spiritual Journey through Holy Week.” This study explores the main texts in all four Gospels and in Paul's writings relating to the last week of Jesus' life and his resurrection.  The Gospel writers help us to see who Jesus Christ is and what God is doing in and through him.  With writings that pre-date the Gospels, Paul is

the first New Testament writer we know to have witnessed the risen Christ.  After the five-week study, we will listen to the last-half of “Handel's Messiah” performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

The group will meet on Monday mornings in March at 9:30 a.m. in the church’s Conference Room. Interested in joining us or have some questions? Please contact Argerie Martin (912-598-8211; [email protected]).

MLC Newsletter ~ March 2019 ~ Page 9

The Men’s Breakfast & Bible Study group will meet each Wednesday in March. Beginning on Wednesday, March 20, the group will begin a new series titled “Making Sense of Scripture.” The group meets at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesdays in the church’s Conference Room. All men of the church and visitors and newcomers are welcome to attend. No prior Biblical knowledge is necessary.

In Making Sense of Scripture, The Rev. Dr. David Lose invites the reader to engage in a conversation, one that he imagines discussing around his kitchen table, about seven major questions of the Bible. More than a standard biblical

reference book, Making Sense of Scripture is a dialogue that encourages readers to bring their questions or doubts to the table when reading Scripture. During this conversation, there are different opportunities for the reader to interact with the Bible, ultimately leaving room for personal transformation of the heart and mind.

March 20 Session 1: What Is the Bible? March 27 Session 2: Is the Bible True? April 3 Session 3: How Is the Bible the Word of God? April 10 Session 4: Where Did the Bible Come From? April 17 Session 5: How Can I Read the Bible with Greater Understanding? April 24 Session 6: Is There a "Center" to Scripture? May 1 Session 7: What Kind of Authority Does the Bible Hold?

Beginning Ash Wednesday, March 6 and going through April 17, all are invited to start a routine of listening to God by exploring the spiritual discipline of reading Scripture in daily Devotionals. The goal is to seek & find God each day in the Bible. A list of Devotionals that some at Messiah currently use is available in the Narthex. Curious? Speak with Linda Jacla, Lynn McLauchlan, or Alexandra Talness.

You may participate in this challenge by signing up on Sunday, March 3 at the table display in the Narthex. The list of recommended devotionals includes “Jesus Calling – Enjoying Peace In His Presence” by Sarah Young, “New Day New You” by Joyce Meyer, “Grace for the Moment” by Max Lucado, “Every Day In His Presence” by Charles Stanley, “Experiencing God Day By Day” by Henry & Richard Blackaby, “Seize The Day with Dietrich Bonhoeffer: A 365 Day Devotional (Designed for Influence)” by Charles Rigma, “365 Prescriptions for the Soul” by Bernie Siegel, “Streams in the Desert” by C. Confirmation Class will meet in the Fellowship Hall at church on most Wednesdays after our Lenten gathering. There will be no class on March 6 because of the Ash Wednesday worship service and no class on March 20 because of spring break.

What, you may wonder, is confirmation? Some people find it helpful to call it Affirmation of Baptism, a perhaps more descriptive name. Confirmation is the students’ public affirmation that they will live out the promises that their parents, sponsors, and congregation made for them at their baptism (that is, assuming that they were baptized as an infant). The confirmands are asked to promise “to live among God’s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s Supper, to

proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.”

Prior to Confirmation or Affirmation of Baptism, students attend confirmation classes, a process for readying the students to affirm these promises. The process takes many forms and varies from congregation to congregation, but the end goal is the same: to prepare people to boldly and confidently make those promises, affirm their baptisms, and continue to live out their faith in the church.

Library At Messiah

Yes, there is one! Libraries have always been significant in the education of the people to whom it belongs. Messiah's library belongs to its members, but is not particularly accessible now. A proposal was submitted to Pastor and the Council about how it could be more serviceable. The proposal was accepted and Barb Tinker, Chairman of the Education and Disciple Ministry, was assigned to work with the project. Barb is dynamic and astute and will provide needed and welcomed leadership and support.

The proposal included examining everything that had been placed in the library over the years. Those books which are not suitable for the library will be offered to our members. Any not taken will be donated to the Salvation Army.

What will the library hold? Its foundation is a substantial collection of theological, doctrinal, and scriptural historical exegesis/writings, a number of books on Martin Luther, and various commentaries on the books of the Bible. The remaining books, and any media donated by the congregation, will be approved by Pastor Jason and/or Council before inclusion.

A synopsis of individual books/media housed on the shelves will be written and published in the weekly Messiah Minute. The following codes will be used to indicate the level of difficulty in reading/comprehending.

• Easy; Readable. Easy to read, but concepts may be new. • Mod. Easy. Understanding the words used, but concepts are more challenging. If so, read

twice. Slowly and aloud. • Mod. Difficult. You may be familiar with these scriptural and doctrinal words, but not able to

understand what the sentence means. PERSEVERE. • Difficult. Concepts will be unfamiliar if you have not had some theological training. A

theological dictionary is available.

News from the Evangelism Ministry Linda Jacla, Chairman The Prayer Tree

The Evangelism Ministry is offering something special during Lent.  It is called The Prayer Tree.  The idea is to pick up a blank cross and write on it the name of someone or something for which you wish to pray (See examples in photo here).

Once you have your prayer on a cross, you will hang it on a tree with only branches.  Then you are asked to take one home and include it in your prayers.  The following Sunday you can bring it back, drop it in a box and do it all over again.

News from the Outreach Ministry Connie Squibb, Chairman

Reminder: The Freezer is Stocked Anyone is welcome to take some of the food stocked in the freezer in the main kitchen. These heartfelt main entrées and the soup (all made by members of Messiah) are available to share with anyone in our community. The Cooks and Conversation Group encourages you to take and share.

Union Mission Project A sincere thank you for the wonderful response to Februar y’s “Love Thy Neighbor” event. Fifteen bags of warm items were taken to Union Mission. There were sleeping bags, blankets made by the confirmands, warm hats, gloves, socks, coats, and many other generous donations.

Union Mission was very thankful for our donations. The donations are greatly appreciated because when the homeless shelter is full, it is imperative to send people out with enough to stay warm through the night.

We are continuing this project throughout the month of March. We ask that you consider a donation of a warm jacket for anyone (any size — new or gently used), a blanket, and/or a sleeping bag.

We want to do our part to help the people of Savannah with these donations. Your generosity will warm a soul and keep someone physically warmed.

America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia Contributed by Amanda Ridberg

The “FOOD OF THE MONTH” for this month’s 4th Sunday Food Drive (March 24) to support America’s Second Harvest is CANNED

VEGETABLES. We encourage you to bring only this item in March, but all nonperishable donations will be gratefully accepted. We will count the number of cans received as a measure of Messiah’s giving.

Annual Landlovers Flea Market — Saturday, March 9

As most of you know, the Landings Landlovers holds their annual flea market in Messiah Lutheran’s parking lot. For several years, the Outreach Ministry has sold coffee and donuts at the flea market to raise money for ELCA’s World Hunger initiative. We are again asking for volunteers to sign up and work 2.5-hour shifts serving coffee on Saturday, March 9.

We also are trying something a bit different: fresh, warm cinnamon buns in lieu of donuts!  If you would like to help make dough prior to flea market, we will be mixing on Thursday evening, March 7. We hope to boost profits with this change. You may sign up for either or both opportunities on the kiosk in the Narthex or email Peggy Pearson at [email protected].   Call Peggy (598-4238) if you have questions.

The 5th annual Skidaway Island Community Hunger Walk will be on Sunday, March 24, 2019. To celebrate the 5th anniversary, a 5-mile route will be marked for those who want to do a longer walk.

Do you realize that 19% of the people in Georgia can’t be sure of their next meal?  With all of the money raised from this Walk earmarked for our local food bank — America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia — we, as a community, can help change that disturbing statistic.

This year we are asking for 50 people to donate $30 to sponsor three walkers from the community at $10 each. The goal is to encourage more people from the community to participate. Please invite your friends and neighbors to be one of our sponsored walkers.

Donations will be received on March 10, 17, and 24 in the Fellowship Hall after the worship service. Checks should be made out to Messiah Lutheran Church with “SI Hunger Walk” on the memo line. Cash donations should be given in the exact amount.

Those participating in the Community Hunger Walk should wear or bring their walking attire to Church. We will have a brunch at 10:15 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall and the Walk will begin at 11:15 a.m.

Let’s make the 5th anniversary our best year ever! For more information, please c o n t a c t L y n n M c L a u c h l a n ([email protected]; 349-0234).

Fellowship Dinner Group Update

The word is out! The Fellowship Dinner Groups are progressing nicely and everyone is enjoying the fellowship and tasty meals. Hopefully, they are on the third or fourth rotation this month, and will be able to finish by the end of April.

Soon it will be time to signup for 2019-2020 Dinner Groups. Look for a signup sheet in the Narthex in April. We look forward to assigning new groups by the end of April.

Bon Appetit! Norrita Thorne & Lana Gilster

Volunteers Wanted — STILL Needed!

Each Sunday our members enjoy fresh coffee and treats after service in the Fellowship Hall. The Sunday treats are provided by church members, and our Hospitality Ministry does a wonderful job setting up before, and cleaning up after, these times for fellowship. This Ministry is looking for volunteers to join the effort. Volunteers will be put on a rotating schedule and may only have to work every other month depending upon how many members sign up. That’s not a bad schedule at all, especially considering that Cheryl has done this almost every Sunday for years!

You may ask, “What does being a Coffee Hour Volunteer entail?”

• Prior to Coffee Hour: Prepare the coffee pots, tea, and lemonade. This can be done as early as the Friday before the Sunday service or as late as the morning of the service.

• During Coffee Hour: Set out the treats provided by the members, keep an eye on supplies during coffee hour and mingle.

• After Coffee Hour: Wash the coffee pots and pitchers and wipe down the tables.

This is a fun and rewarding ministry! All volunteers will be trained. If you have an interest in participating (or just feel guilty!), or want more information,  please contact Jill Poole ([email protected]; 912-441-7170).

Here and There Around the Church

Because of a likely short in the electrical system, six (6) lights in the sanctuary need to be repaired this week.  The work should be completed in one day.

If you see something around the church that needs attention, please tell Tim Andrews (612-868-5222; [email protected]).

News from the Stewardship Ministry George Lawrence, Chairman

It's not too late to pledge for the 2019 pledge year. Those members who would like to pledge but do not have pledge cards, or don't know where to send the completed pledge card, please follow this suggestion. If you call the office, you can tell Sandy Cooper to order them for you. When the cards arrive, Sandy will let you they are ready for pick-up. (Note: There are still envelopes waiting to be picked up in the office for those members of standing as of December 2018). Once you complete the card, please mail or give it to our Confidential Financial Secretary Verne Hartson (Address: 6 Angler's Court, Savannah, GA 31411;

Telephone: 598-8984). Any questions, contact me, George Lawrence, at 484-2818.  It is very important for our budgetary process that we get as many of our members as possible  to pledge.

Liturgical Colors during Lent

In the Christian tradition colors are used for vestments and paraments, but a unified system of colors developed only gradually and haphazardly until and through the Middle Ages. Today, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America provides a system of colors for use by its congregations; for the most part, the same system also is used by Roman and Anglican churches, at least in the United States, and by many churches around the world, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.

The colors serve to adorn the worship space, and to call attention to the nature of the season or festival being celebrated. A brief summary of the use of color in Lent follows.

Color of the Season ✝      For Ash Wednesday, purple is the preferred color as this is the first day of Lent. Historically, black also has been used on this day, because it is the color of the ashes to which we will all return. ✝     During Lent, purple is typically associated with Lent, suggesting repentance and solemnity.

Highlights from Church Council’s Meeting on January 22, 2018

Please note the following highlights have been taken from the minutes that were approved at Council’s February 2019 meeting.

Pastor’s Report. Pastor Talsness reported the following: • Library. Kathryn Turenne has offered to systematize and promote use of Messiah’s library. This work

will fall under the “Discipleship and Education Ministry.” • Book for Council. His wishes for council to read and discuss the book Lasting Impact: 7 Powerful

Conversations that will help your Church Grow by Cary Nieuhoff. The expectation is that it will offer a platform for Council to discuss where we need to go as a congregation, not necessarily to implement all what the books discusses. There will be a meeting at his house on Sunday, January 27 at 6:00 p.m. Attendance is optional.

• Schedule. - Out of town on January 13 (attending a cousin’s ordination into the Lutheran Church of Canada) - Out of town February 8-16 (mission trip to Guatamala); Pastor Dave Rasmussen pulpit supply for

Sunday, February 10. - Out of town March 17-23 (College tours with daughter Ana during her spring date) - Out of office May 23-26 (Memorial Day weekend: attending son Peter’s high school graduation). - Out of town May 31-June 3 (Synod Assembly, Chattanooga, TN)

Sunday, February 3

During the worship service, Pastor Jason led the congregation in prayer for our members traveling to Guatemala in February with the medical mission group Faith in Practice. Left to right in the photo: Eric Gilster (OB/GYN), Connie Squibb (surgical nurse), Pat Cooper (food prep and presentation), and Jim Hazel (food prep and presentation). Pastor Talsness also went on the trip and served as chaplain.

This also was 🍲 “SOUPER” 🍲 BOWL SUNDAY. About five members brought their favorite soup for a friendly Super Bowl game day competition during fellowship. Members sampled all the entries and voted for their favorite soup. This event also was a benefit for Union Mission. Members brought warm hats, mittens, and socks to donate to the homeless of Savannah.

Jan Castleberry & Ann Green were the winners and each received a golden ladle!

February’s Ladies Night Out was a fun event, featuring wonderful dishes brought to the church to share. Laura Michael gave an informative and entertaining program titled “Be Alert, Be Safe” that stressed the importance of situational awareness.

This photo didn’t make last month’s newsletter. It is from late January when several members got together to make Valentines for residents of a nursing home.
