Fr. Terry Keehan I believe that we are all excited about the pos-sibility of opening up church soon. That is very understandable and, believe me, I am looking forward to it more than I had even earlier antici-pated. However, I want to share a warning with you as well as a word of caution. Certain news stories have identifi ed dates when churches will reopen. I cannot emphasize enough that this cannot hap-pen until we are certifi ed and given permission to let anyone in our building. We have already surfaced a small leadership team as per Archdiocesan guidelines and have begun training the team. The training is very in-tense and thorough and the process of reopening will be methodical. This process supports stan-dards set by the State of Illinois with the support of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Our team will engage volunteers to assist with the Set Up, Greeting and Sanitizing of our facility BEFORE and FOLLOWING each liturgical event that will be limited to 10 attendees. We ask you to cooperate with the guideline that will be set and be faithful, pro-life citizens. For more and ongo-ing information. please be attentive to the weekly email blasts, webpage and bulletin articles. I miss all of you! I miss celebrating with you and receiving the real presence of our Lord in the Eucharist. I miss the activity and the strong daily hum of people fi lling our expansive campus with such life. It is more pronounced for you I'm sure, be-cause you can't come here to Holy Family. For Fr. Rich and I, it is pronounced in a diff erent way. We ARE here but no one else is. That fact makes me yearn to gather again even more. Every day this empty facility reminds us of what we are missing – YOU!!! Fr. Rich and I really missed taping Mass for a three week stretch because we were quaran-tined. I was exposed to Covid while giving the Anointing of the Sick to a man who tested posi-tive. His results came the day following my visit. I want to send a heartfelt thanks to those of you who extended prayers and good wishes during our quarantine. As always, I want to send a great big thank you also to Friar Johnpaul for taping Masses during our absence. He was scheduled to preside periodically anyway but his additional
generosity is much appreciated. We are concluding the Easter Season with two important liturgical events – Ascension this weekend, and Pentecost next weekend. I liken the Ascension to The Last Dance of Jesus on earth. Coach Phil Jackson labeled the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls season as The Last Dance be-cause he was informed by management prior to the start of the season that it would be his last as head coach of the team. A 10-episode documentary of the same name and season has been aired the past 5 weeks, and my observation is that the Bulls’ Last Dance was an ending. The Ascension of Jesus and Pentecost are beginnings. The energy of the Bulls Last Dance was down and in. The spiritual energy of Ascension and Pentecost are up and out. Jesus ascends UP, but he fi rst commissions the 11 apostles to go OUT to ALL nations and Baptize and assure his loving presence in the world for all time. I often point out that the Holy Spirit then gives the apostles what they need to accomplish or start such a huge task. The Acts of the Apostles (Ch 2:1-4) tells us that Holy Spirit helps to sur-face Matthias to take the place of Judas, thus completing their group, and then the same Spirit directly gives them what they need to baptize ALL nations in their native language. That gift enabled them to tell ALL nations the story of our God becoming human in Jesus Christ and his salvifi c acts that continue today–by the working of the same HOLY SPIRIT. I hope that you all have as good a Memorial Day as possible given the restrictions that we are living in. It is an opportunity for us to use the precious gift of our memory to stay in commu-nion with our loved ones who have passed away. Similar to the limitation of contactwith each other now, our contact with them is limited. May no barriers prevent us from cherish-ing the gift of life that God has given us. May we appreciate each other's presence now more than ever, even though we are limited by distance and physical touch. The life that God has given us is too powerful to be limited by a pandemic or death. Happy Memorial Day!

Sunday Readings for 5-31-20 and listen to Fr. Terry Keehan refl ect on the readings.Pentecost
1. How did the Pentecost enable the faith to reach the corners of the earth and grow for over 2,000 years? 2. Like the disciples, if you could suddenly speak multiple languages and communicate like never before, how would you use this new gift?3. In our second reading, Paul says: “There are diff erent kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit.” In the church today, do we really value all the diff erent gifts of the Spirit, including diversity?4. Jesus repeatedly off ered the gift of forgiveness, and passed it on to the disciples. Why is forgiveness so impor-tant yet so elusive? How can we do a better job of forgiving in the coming year?5. Now that Lent and Easter have concluded, have you experienced anything diff erent in your thoughts or actions?SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTIONWhere is the Holy Spirit leading you in your work for the common good? Are unresolved or unforgiven trespasses holding you back?
Happy Birthday, Church!Celebrating Pentecost at Home
On May 31 we will celebrate the great Feast of Pentecost, the Birthday of the Church. Our Paschal Season journey that began on Ash Wednesday is about to end, but the journey has been far diff erent than any of us could have imagined. We have experienced a change in perspective relative to suff ering, self-sacrifi ce, and community, and have witnessed Love First and Always in action. Now, at Pentecost, we are called to go forth, in the power of the Holy Spirit. The mission of salvation takes on a new life as the Spirit fi lls us with the gifts needed to be Christ for the world in these trying times. We are the Church whose birthday we celebrate today. To follow Christ, to be Christ, is the essence of Christianity; it is the meaning of Pentecost. We have been outside the walls of our church building for many weeks. And even though we all look forward to the day we can return to our beloved Holy Family church building, hopefully this period of “exile” has helped us to recognize the importance of our domestic Church, our many holy families, and of being church for others by healing, serving, reconciling, and loving. Since we won’t be able to be together this Pentecost, please help us celebrate this special birthday by gathering your “holy family” together for a photograph. Dress in red, make a decorated sign reading “Happy Birthday, Church!”, hold red balloons and/or red and yellow streamers; be creative. Send those photos to [email protected] no later than Friday, May 22. On Sunday, May 31, tie red and yellow ribbons around tree limbs, or tie red and yellow balloons to your mailbox, allowing them to blow in the breeze, recall-ing the power of the Holy Spirit coming like a strong driving wind. Fly a kit. Make a cake to celebrate the birth of the Church. Red icing and candles serve as great reminders of the Spirit coming as individual fl ames on each of the disciples. Make a banner, draw some pictures, or fi nd another way to express the day artistically. Post your creations around your home as reminders of the gift of the Holy Spirit and the Church. Again, be creative!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHURCH!

Re-Opening Process The last time we were together in church was 10 weeks ago, and we are all anxious to return to our Holy Family home. We have recently received informa-tion regarding Phase 1 and Phase 1A of re-opening the Church. Phase 1 allows for Sacramental events, i.e. Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals and Reconciliation. Phase 1A allows for adoration and private prayer. A certifi cation process is re-quired for the re-opening of these phases. We have reviewed the guidelines, cre-ated the required teams, and are now in the process of creating and establishing the necessary protocols to comply and receive certifi cation for Phase 1 reopening. At this time we do not have a re-opening date, however, we will continue to com-municate our progress and plans. While the church has been closed, our maintenance staff has been not only monitoring our facility, but also cleaning, sanitizing and preparing for our return. The most recent projects completed have been very large in scale. For the fi rst time in many, many years the gym ceiling has been cleaned, and it was no small feat. The fl oor covering the Baptismal Font has been refi nished and they are cur-rently power washing the stone façade of the church. Our truly talented and gifted maintenance staff has found new ways to ap-proach many of their daily routines, organize storage spaces and discard useless items, and will soon be painting curbs. HOORAY for our maintenance staff ! If you happen to see a maintenance person now, or when you return to the campus, please give them a thank you. We couldn’t do it without them!

FAMILIES BELONG TOGETHERCatholic Extension’s Holy Family Fund
Catholic Extension has long supported ministries to welcome and support im-migrants, so it is no surprise that when immigrants endure the traumatic impact of detention or deportation of a breadwinning member of their family, Catholic Extension, through the support of you, our donors, is there to ease their suff er-ing. This past year, Catholic Extension established the Holy Family Fund to assist immigrant families in Extension Dioceses who experience a sudden family separa-tion due to ICE raids, detention and deportations. The title of this program honors our founding partner, Holy Family Parish in Inverness, Illinois, whose generous donations from a Lenten appeal created the fund. The name also honors the Holy Family of Nazareth, Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child. They themselves were a young immigrant family who fl ed violence and persecution in their homeland. The program provides funds and supportive services to immigrant children and spous-es who experience extreme fi nancial insecurity and profound trauma in the wake of these abrupt family separations. Last August, the largest immigration raid in U.S. history took place in Morton, Mississippi, when 680 residents were detained without notice. Families were shattered. The immigrants, mainly of Gua-temalan descent, belonged to poor parishes that Catholic Extension has helped for years. Through the Holy Family Fund, Catholic Ex-tension responded immediately. We provided emergency aid to several parishes, who then reached out to families with humanitar-ian assistance and eased the chaos. Father Jack Wall, our president, said “Separated families, like the ones in Mississippi, are the human toll of our broken immigration system, which suff ers from our nation’s inability to fi nd a common sense legislative solution to this pressing issue.” “Families are the core of our Church and our nation,” he added. “There is no greater thing that we can do for the common good than to strengthen families, including immigrant families. When we break up families, no one wins.” To date, the Holy Family Fund has extended nearly $125,000 to immigrant fam-ilies. In addition to donating $80,000 to this fund, Holy Family Parish has extended nearly $300,000 to Catholic Extension from other Lenten campaigns through our Parish Partnership Program. This initiative off ers parishes the opportunity to make a diff erence in the lives of fellow Catholics by connecting them to communities in need. Jonathan, 8 years old, wrote: “There are many destroyed families, children who are suff ering, waiting to see their dad or their mom who are still in detention. We ask you to keep helping people who still have family members in detention. Please do not abandon us. Because we the children are the ones who are suff ering the most after the raid on August 7th. Many days have passed and the children still have hope to see their mother or their father come back home. We are very grate-ful for all that you are doing for us and for the help that you gave to my mom.”
