THE AUSTRALIAN N SCALE MODULAR SYSTEM After consultation with clubs & individuals from around Australia a group of N Scale enthusiasts collated the ideas supplied and formed them into an Australian N Scale Modular System to be known as AusTrak. Layouts can be quickly assembled from a range of modules, which are designed to give the builder experience in carpentry, track laying, wiring and scenery.
The Standards still allow for individual preferences and ensures that a person living anywhere in Australia can build a module to these AusTrak Standards.
Transportation of modules should be able to be by the owner’s own vehicle, which usually dictates the size of the module that may be built.
Electrical components and wiring conform to Australian Standards.
Descriptive names and numbers used throughout this booklet are those as quoted in current trade catalogues.

SAFETY There are many rules and regulations set down at federal, State and local Council levels to ensure the safety of organisations and individuals when dealing with dangerous materials or hazardous environments.
KNOWN DANGEROUS MATERIALS These items shall not be used on any AusTrak module. Some styrene foams emit toxic fumes when burnt and certain older electrical components contain PCB, which is carcinogenic. The use of this substance is marked on the cases of the items.
ELECTRICAL All electrical rules and regulations shall be practiced with all equipment connected to the 240V/50Hz main power supply. Electrical equipment of this type must be checked and approved by a qualified electrician or accredited contractor whichever is applicable for the local electricity supply authority before being used at any exhibition, club or group layout. Check with the local electricity supply authority for any mandatory regulations. All mains outlet sockets must be tested for correctness before being used. Clubs and individuals must supply a RESIDUAL CURRENT DETECTOR for use between any AusTrak layout and the mains supply where none is available at meeting or exhibitions.
TRACKWORK A module must contain 3 tracks. OUTER MAIN, INNER MAIN & BACK MAIN (set-up track). Optional owner’s tracks can connect to any of the main lines by means of electrofrog turnouts. PECO ™ electrofrog turnouts are preferred. Standard PECO ™ code 80 track shall be used to accommodate all rolling stock. On the OUTER & INNER MAIN tracks PECO ™ long radius turnouts must be used. Tracks shall be laid on an underlay of 2mm cork, which is usually available from local cork suppliers. Use 125mm lengths of PECO ™ code 80 track for inter-module connectors. Use HO finecale joiners or PECO ™ joiners for ease of fitting.
EXPANSION GAPS A gap of 0.75-1.00 gap in both rails at a room temperature of about 25 degrees C is recommended. No gap is required in very hot conditions of about 40 degrees C. A gap of 1.0mm is recommended for cold conditions. Any other expansion gaps can be allowed for at the inter-module rail connectors. Metal rail joiners must be used at the expansion gaps with bridging jumper wires soldered to each side on both rails.
SCENERY No scenery shall project above the top of the skyboard. 50mm should be left flat at the ends of each module to aid continuity. Where two or more modules are built as a unit the beginning and ending edges must have the 50mm flat area.
COLOURS Module shall be painted matt black except for the viewing areas. Skyboard to be DULUX ™ WINTER DREAMS. Ground cover to be DULUX ™ VOGEL. Base grass to be WOODLANDS SCENICS ™ - T44 BURNT GRASS. The grass shall be predominant within the first 100mm and blended towards the centre of the module with colours selected for module theme.
ANALOGUE DC or DCC USAGE It is recommended to use either ANALOGUE DC or DCC for all tracks on any modular system. ANALOGUE DC and DCC tracks should NOT be mixed on the same modular system.

Fit cable anchors and grommets as required. LAYOUT A term used to define a complete working layout. BLOCK A loop or portion of a track with a dedicated controller which directs trains
under it’s jurisdiction. SECTION An isolated section of main line track that can be controlled separately from the Block controller to allow movement of trains from one track to another. OWNER’S TRACKS Optional extra tracks located anywhere that cannot interfere with any of the
main running tracks. When any OWNER’S TRACKS are connected to any of the main lines by turnouts an insulated gap must be provided between the selected track and the OWNER’s TRACKS . Derives it’s power from cable 07 (green).
BLOCK CONTROL Where a loop of a layout is divided into BLOCKS by inserting insulated joiners
and disconnecting the track cables. Each BLOCK is controlled by it’s own block controller. Eg:- A layout divided into 2 blocks with a 3 track system would require 6 controllers.
SECTION CONTROL Where SECTION CONTROL is provided a block may be divided into
SECTIONS allowing each selected track to be operated independently of the block controllers. Each SECTION must be provided with it’s own controller.
POWER SUPPLY A device to convert 240V/50Hz mains power to useable DC or AC power
required to operate scale model trains. These devices must be treated with care and all safety rules adhered to when building them. One large or a number of smaller power supplies may be used to power a layout.
CONTROLLER A train speed control device plugged in at the module interface. A controller
must be provided for each track controlled by a block. Additional controllers must be provided for section control and owner'’ tracks.
DP/DT SWITCH Double Pole/Double Throw Switch. +VE & -VE The convention is used to define the polarity of wires and tracks. +VE = The
POSITIVE WIRE which usually carries some marking. The POSITIVE RAIL is the nearest rail to the observer when viewed from the front of the module.
TAGGING The means of identifying wires by colour coding with paint o or tags. All cables
and connection points should be marked in a consistent and meaningful way. BACK MAIN The REARMOST track on the module behind the skyboard. Used as a set-up
track. Derives it’s power from cable 08 (blue). INNER MAIN The FARTHEST main line in front of the skyboard. Derives it’s power from
cable 09 (yellow). OUTER MAIN The NEAREST main line from the front of the module. Dreives it’s power from
cable 10 (red

ELECTRICAL SWITCHES Owner’s tracks to be DP/DT or DP/DT/CO switches where required. This isolates the owner’s tracks from any main lines when the owner’s controller is in use. A track diagram & instructions to be fitted to the rear face of the skyboard.
CAPACITOR DISCHARGE UNIT (CDU) A CDU stores a charge which when released provides a large burst of voltage over a short period to enable the reliable operation of turnout motors. For all cables use 24 x 0.2mm stranded mains insulated type. The marked wire to be used as POSITIVE (+VE). If solenoid turnouts are used then a CDU must be fitted to that module. Use the 18 volt AC cable (02 – brown) for all individual CDUs. Operation of CDUs is not permitted from the 240V/50Hz mains power supply or auxiliary supply cable (03 orange).

DCC Note – Cable 4, 5, & 6 are available for DCC usage at the discretion of the users. It is the users responsibility to determine what DCC system is used and which cables are allocated for the DCC buses. It is recommended that Cable 5 be used for the DCC Common line.
CONNECTOR TYPES Utilux™ 2 pin type. Male pins in female cases and female pins in male cases. Male pins to be on the Right Hand side of the module when viewed from the front. Plugs and sockets to on flying leads approximately 450 long and colour tagged. Provide tie-ups at each end of module for transportation purposes. Pins at the pointed end of the case connect to the nearest rail when viewed from the front of the module (+VE RAIL). Pins at the square end of the case connect to the farthest rail when viewed from the front of the module (-VE RAIL). Male pins in female cases:- CASE = No1545-P1 – MALE PIN = No H9002 Female pins in male cases:- CASE = No 1545-R1 – FEMALE PIN = No H9001
SAFETY 240V/50ZHz mains power supply cables shall not be suspended under any module. All mains power outlets must be tested for correctness before use. A RESIDUAL CURRENT DETECTOR (RCD) must be used between layout and the mains supply.
