Pegasus-2014

Dear Reader,

It is with great pleasure that we, at the British International School, Chennai (TBISC), unveil this year’s magazine, ‘Pegasus’. TBISC was

founded in the year 2005 and was the dream and vision of the late Mr. Palaniappan Ramasamy. It is with his blessings that we have grown from strength to strength. TBISC has completed 10 years and it has been an interesting and fulfilling journey. I am proud to share with you that our students have till date obtained 86 ‘A’ & ‘A*’ grades in INTERNATIONAL GCSE and 215 ‘A’ & ‘A*’ grades in GCE in the examinations held by Edexcel International. Our academic excellence is a testimony to the hard work put in by our students, dedicated teachers and supportive parents.

Each student is unique and it is a pleasure to witness the transformation and growth of our children into keen, inquisitive and intelligent youngsters. Kiseki Hirakawa and Veena Suresh are two of our prize students who are completing their ‘A’ level this year and we are very proud to have them with us.

In keeping with the changing trends of students wishing to study different subjects other than the regular mainstream subjects, we have analysed the demands and have decided to offer students new subjects and choices. We have also noticed that parents, of late, have become highly supportive of their children’s choices regarding their future studies, career and choice of universities, based on which they choose the right kind of institution to ensure that their children have an easy entry to foreign universities. To meet such demands, from time to time, we have introduced subjects such as Psychology, General Studies, Law and Computing at ‘A’ level. We have also introduced BTEC in Sports and Performing Arts (Dance).

PrinciPal’s Message

I am happy to say that TBISC’s students are multi-lingual, multi cultural and very enthusiastic about extracurricular, co-curricular and co-scholastic activities. Our students have also been consistently excelling in (ESOL) certificate courses such as YLE, KET, PET and FCE. Further, on parents’ demands, we have decided to introduce a certified course in English for parents wishing to learn English as a Foreign Language. We have also instituted a rolling trophy to the best sporting team, in memory of the founder, late Mr. Palaniappan Ramasamy, who was a keen and enthusiastic sportsman. We have also started a band called Purple Waves to give our students a platform to exhibit and express their musical talents and creativity.

The students of TBISC had been to North India for the annual excursion. A special mention and thanks to Mr. John Prabakar for making this possible. To say that we had a joyous and memorable time would be an understatement. The splendor of the Taj Mahal is something that I am sure will linger on in the memories of the students for ever.

Hope you enjoy this year’s magazine and we thank you for your encouragement and support.

Best regards,Mrs. Rama Ramasamy

Principal

The British International School, Chennai®®

The British International School, Chennai was founded by Mr. Palaniappan Ramasamy, a brilliant and multi faceted

personality.

Mr. Palaniappan Ramasamy, MA, BL, CAIIB, after graduating from St.Joseph’s College, Trichy, did his Masters at the Presidency College, Chennai, and received a Gold Medal in Economics. He also studied law in Bangalore.

His career began in the banking sector and later he worked with a leading Media house in Tamil Nadu. Thereafter he was also involved in a variety of businesses including magazine publication. However, the academician in him kept him engaged simultaneously as a Visiting Faculty and a Member of the Governing Body of Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA) of the renowned Loyola College, Chennai. He taught Business Strategy to MBA students.

His vision was to launch a unique educational institution, to provide authentic International Education in India and established “THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, CHENNAI”, to impart the Edexcel syllabus.

TBISC started in the LIBA building within the famed Loyola College campus and shifted to its existing premises in Neelangarai, off ECR in a short span of time, TBISC has grown from strength to strength, offering the British National Curriculum (modified to suit the Indian culture and student’s capabilities) up to Year 8 and IGCSE and GCE (AS & A level) of Edexcel Board (formerly London Examinations). His vision was to develop this institution on par with Grammar Schools in UK.

Late Mr. P.L. RaMaSaMY

The very fact that the students from TBISC have scored such excellent marks/grades in all the Edexcel Board examinations right from 2005 till date and are continuing to do so is in itself the greatest tribute to the genius, the foresight, vision and the perseverance of Mr. Ramasamy.

He was loved by, and a favourite amongst, the students and staff. He was affectionate and broadminded with a keen appreciation for each student’s individuality. His principle in life was that each child was precious with exceptional capabilities which should be encouraged and developed. A legion of his friends, colleagues, employees and relatives have immensely benefitted from his intelligence, guidance, benevolence and large-heartedness.TBISC is a testimony to his imagination, drive, enthusiasm and perfect execution.

BteC:Today’s students are versatile with diverse interests ranging from Computing, Psychology and Law to Performing Arts and Sports. In keeping with the changing interests of students, TBISC has also evolved and introduced BTEC in Performing Arts (Dance) and Sports – Level 2 and Level 3.BTEC (Business & Technology Education Council) is a vocational qualification exclusively administered by Edexcel. BTEC provides a practical approach to studying, applying learning to real life situations thereby offering a flexible and progressive form of learning. Study areas are linked to areas of interest such as sports and performing arts. Learning would be more interactive with

workshops, seminars and guest lectures and is ideal for students who have already chosen their career. A differentiator for BTEC includes continuous assessment, which is based on a combination of examination, practicals, assignments, field work, experiments and international and external assessments. External assessment would be directly administered by Edexcel, London. BTEC Level 3 certificate is equivalent to one ‘GCE’ ‘A’ level and as accepted as an entry requirement for universities and colleges. BTEC provides for 200 qualifications for students to choose from and TBISC currently offers Performing Arts (Dance) and Sports, with more to come.

Students enjoy BTEC programmes

because they can specialise in areas of learning linked with work that they are interested in, like sport or the music business. Their course can tap into what they enjoy, feel good at and find familiar. Students develop practical skills that they know employers will value and which will help them get a job in the future, but without having to commit themselves like they would on an apprenticeship.

BTEC. An inspired choice!

BTECs offer active learning in a vocational context that, in turn, builds students’ confidence, competence and motivation. Not only is a BTEC equivalent to GCSEs and ‘A’ Levels, where students can continue on to university or start their career straight from school, students who gain BTEC qualifications will also earn UCAS points at the same time.

Harvest Festival

Pongal / Sankranti is a harvest festival and the students of TBISC

celebrated this day with great joy and enthusiasm.

We remember the farewell party like it was yesterday. We year 9 and AS Level (2013 – 2014), had much fun organizing the event. We began planning the event weeks in advance. Keeping it a secret from IGCSE and A Level (2013-2014) wasn’t an easy task, we could hardly contain the excitement. We came to school hours before to organize. Some of us were hard at work in the kitchen, some decorating the place and the rest of us just being lazy. Haha! Just kidding. Our guests started coming in at around half past four. We seated the students along with the parents at their respective tables. We kept some titbits and beverages on every table so that our guests wouldn’t go hungry. For the entertainment portion of the evening, we had some interactive games and live music. We had ‘minute- to- win- it’ styled games and some of us did solo, duet and group performances. Before we wrapped up the whole event, we showed them a small presentation, taking them on a trip down memory lane. All in all, we had a great time that evening and we hope we could do that again!

educational triP to north indiaD a y 1

October 28th, was an exciting day. We, a group of 9 students along with our Principal and a parent, woke up extra early to get to the airport. We were sleepy but anticipation ran high among us, we were looking forward to this educational tour. We landed in Delhi late morning. After a quick trip to our hotel to drop our luggage and a quick freshen up, we were on our way- our tour had begun.

Delhi –was our first stop. We visited Historical Monuments, Qutab Minar tower and mosque. It is an ancient mosque, made from red sandstone and marble and is the second largest in India at 379 steps and 73 feet meters high. This heritage site is cylindrical shaft.

by Helga, Year 8

The next day got us even more excited- we were going to visit Agra- home to the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna, the Taj is a mausoleum built by Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The tomb is surrounded by four Minarets. Near the Taj Mahal are the Great Gate and the Taj Mosque.Agra fort: after the scintillating visit to the Taj, we visited another Mogul site, The Agra Fort. A fort famous for its red brick work and it’s often called the Walled City. The Fort existed from the 11th Century and has been held by Sikander Lodi- Humayun and Shah Jahan to name a few. This fort was the site of the Indian rebellion of 1857 – one of the many causes for the end of The British East India Company. It is yet another building where Hindu and Islamic architecture is found.

by Daniel, Year 8

D a y 5We left early morning for Ajmer a Muslim town with many Sufi Shrines from here travelled to Pushkar- the oldest existing city is a Hindu pilgrimage spot. It is believed that the Puskhar Lake was formed from the tears of Lord Shiva, which he is believed to have shed after the death of his wife Sati. After that we visited the Brahma temple – the only place where Brahma may be worshipped. Then after a hearty lunch we reached the Puskhar Fair- the camel and livestock fair is a well known tourist attraction. Competitions such as Longest Moustache are held. The fair is celebrated for five days and cattle, camels and livestock are auctioned. One of the most exciting experience was the camel ride, which we all enjoyed.

by Sangwoo, Year 9

The next day we travelled back to Delhi to catch our flight back to Chennai. We were all tired yet sad that our trip has so quickly come an end. Back in Chennai, our worried parents waited eagerly for all of us at the gates ready to take us home. All of us are happy to say that this was a memorable trip and take this opportunity to thank the management of TBISC for arranging this tour. Once again thank you Madam Principal and we look forward to the next enjoyable trip.

D a y 3Fatehpur Sikri: it served as the capital of the Mughal Empire before Agra. The Jama Masjid is located here. The Diwan I Khas– a hall for public audience is a large rectangular structure. However it is famous for its center pillar, which is square based with an octagonal shaft carved with geometric and floral designs.

Marble factory: as we toured Agra we found people selling miniature Taj Mahals. As had been planned we soon found ourselves at the Marble factory. We were given a crash course on the making of art items - Exquisite filigree work and the translucent nature of the marble gives it a luster.

by Moody, Year 8

Jaipur- We travelled from Agra to Jaipur again excited at the prospects of visiting another historical town. The whole town was red and pink, each building reflected the palace in colour and shape. On a fairly windy day we visited the Palace of Wind/Breeze - the Hawa Mahal,a palace built from red and pink sandstone. The palace is five storeys’s high and made like a honeycomb – it is said to be in the form of Krishna’s Crown. The museum is housed in the main City Palace.Jal Palace which means Water Palace is located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur. From the palace one can see the Aravilli hills, dotted with temples and ancient forts.Jantar Mantar- later that day we visited the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur. It is modeled on the observatory in Delhi. It houses a collection of architectural astronomical instruments. An observatory – it has 14 major geometric devices for time measurement, eclipse, studying the stars locations to name a few of its uses. Our next stop was the beautiful Amber Palace at the top of the hill - also called Amer fort it overlooks Maoto Lake. The palace has a panoramic view at various parts of the day and is a photographer’s delight. In the falling dusk we visited Choki Dhani, an ethnic village that mirrors the cultural life of rural Rajasthan. We had our dinner here.

My name is Dia Iyer. I came to India from Japan in June. I lived in Tokyo, which is the capital of

Japan. I studied in Tokyo at the British School. Tokyo is a big city with a lot of tall buildings. The people of Japan speak the Japanese language. Kimono is the traditional dress of the Japanese people. Their food is mainly rice, sea food and boiled vegetables. They eat their food using chop sticks. Japan is a very beautiful country with a lot of places to visit for tourists. The cherry blossom in spring is a beautiful sight.

Multinational coMPanies

What do we mean by Multinational companies ? Companies which

are worldwide or companies which have at least more than one branch in another country other than the hometown. Many companies today are global, this means that the firms sell their products all over the world, this is called globalisation. Why do you think the growth of multinationals are important? The main reason is that many people get jobs, since multinationals are huge, they need a lot of employees to work all across the world and they get paid well because profits will be really high for these kind of companies. Multinationals are created because they exploit economies of scale, this means that they can reduce the cost of their products due to their size and number of branches. Customers benefit from this because, who doesn’t want a product with a cheap price?

A few well known companies such as McDonalds and Subway are good examples of multinationals. They have developed due to effective marketing. There used to be road side shops a long time ago but have developed to be one of the most famous

fast food r e s t a u r a n t s . They have over 35,000 b r a n c h e s w o r l d w i d e which is really a great thing. These multinational companies also create advanced technology to improve their business even more and they employ the most talented and skilled people to join the higher level jobs. It provides training and work experience for people in less developed countries. Multinationals make a lot of profit which means high tax revenue for the government which is good for the local people as well.

Even if there are advantages there are also a few disadvantages. Multinationals can cause huge environmental damage because they occupy a lot of space to build huge companies, they also use a lot of resources. Since they are huge they would need a lot of raw materials which affects the Earth if one consumes too much. Hence the arrival of Multinational companies has encouraged more businesses in less developed countries that also provide the skills and motivations needed. Multinationals also exhibit great efforts to develop and satisfy customer needs.

our triP to Fort st george and the lighthouse

When we were on the bus, there was absolute hysteria. Then when we

arrived, we fell into pin drop silence- there was a government meeting in the secretariat building. We dared not speak.

When we entered the m u s e u m at Fort St George, we were greeted by a weapons display. They had all the o l d - t i m e w e a p o n s

there - armour, axes, swords, machetes and other close-quarter weapons, shotguns and flintlocks - you name it, they had it. We also saw other interesting things like a large replica of a Victorian coin. We also saw some other statues of famous British Conquerors. Time we moved upwards! We found so many

things there which explained how currency evolved over time. Some of the coins were

so small you had to squint to see the details! Then we moved up another floor, which showed us the top 1064 freedom fighters of India, Mahatma Gandhi was number one. When we went to another room, we saw paintings of monarchs like Mary I. We also saw the conference room for the museum staff. After that, we headed off to the church. Some of us nearly stepped on a grave! We got hungry, so we decided it was time for Wang’s Kitchen!!!! We ate noodles and soup, which was substantial enough to last us the day. We went to the lighthouse, where we stood and caught the breeze for a while. The world below us seemed like a Lego set. We all screamed at the top of our voices, “HELLO CHENNAI”!!!. The world seemed so small below us, as though we were birds, soaring gracefully. Then the time came for us to go home……

Overall it was fun!

Based on Rick Riordan’s novel of the same name The Lightning

Thief is the story of the journey Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), a ‘troubled’ teenager, takes, from thinking and believing he’s a trouble-maker, to discovering he is someone very special. Also based on Greek mythology, this movie is a blast from the past and really has a fantastical feel to it.

‘The lightning thief..?’ I hear you ask? It sounds crazy, I know, and poor Percy doesn’t understand it either; not until he’s told that he is son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, and that Zeus, Poseidon’s brother, Percy’s uncle and king of all the gods, thinks he stole his supreme source of power. Ouch.

Percy, accompanied by his best friend and satyr Grover Underwood (Brandon T Jackson), and Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario) fellow camper at Camp Half Blood, embarks on a journey to discover who stole the

lightning bolt and to take it back to his Uncle Zeus (a lot to take in, I know). They must also confront Hades, and to be able to escape the Underworld after they have spoken to him, they must find three magical missing pearls which will be their only way out of there. On this quest they face several obstacles (as expected) which involve meeting with some familiar faces, such as Medusa, some truly terrifying creatures we’ve all heard of, like the hydra and the furies, and some other un-heard of monsters, like the hell-hounds and the lotus-eaters.

We live in a society that regards beauty as everything. In every

shooting stars

Most children really want to wish on a shooting star. What is a

shooting star? A shooting star is nothing but a small piece of rock which travels through space, and is also called a meteor. (Sorry for ruining the surprise, kids!)‘Shooting stars’ enter the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of around 20km/s. As it is moving at such a great speed, a streak of light is produced because of the heat generated as

it moves through the air. This is what is seen as the ‘tail’ of the shooting star. A series of meteors that seem to appear several seconds or minutes apart are known as meteor showers. If meteors intersect with the Earth’s atmosphere, they are known as meteorites. The last meteor shower was visible in India on 22/04/2014. The astronomical calendar of celestial events states that the next meteor shower will be visible in India on 22/04/2015.(only a few more months to go !!)

alone knowing what those chemicals are and what they do! Many of these chemicals have been proven to cause cancer. Estrogen levels are maintained carefully by the glands in the body but when a chemical called sodium lauryl sulfate enters the body, it disrupts the normal estrogen levels which can have a drastic effect on the body. About 75-90% of cosmetics have paraben which is a known contributor to breast cancer. And did you know that wearing nail polish can contribute to cancer? It contains a chemical called DEA which in laboratory experiments was found to cause liver cancer. It is intimidating that most people are unaware of this. So the first step is to spread awareness. For instance, you can

talk about this to your friends and family or hold campaigns. In today’s world, it is almost impossible to avoid contact with man- made chemicals. But there are other alternatives to avoid exposure to those in decorative bottles. One is by using homemade products for beauty enhancement. Other is by buying products that are naturally safe. By keeping ourselves and our environment clean and pollutant safe, we can build a much more beautiful world than that made by cosmetics.

walks of life participated in all the celebratory events with excitement.Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu State forms one of the developed urban centres of India. It is the oldest city of modern India and is known as the cultural capital of South India which is mostly visited by International tourists. A major part of India’s automobile industry is based in and around the city thus nicknamed as “Detroit of India”. According to Forbes, an American magazine, Chennai is one of the fastest growing cities in India in the world. It is one of the four major urban cities in India (next only to Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata). Chennai is popularly known as the temple city, as it has many ancient Hindu temples.Having lived as a foreigner in Chennai for nearly ten years, I am able to compare Chennai and my hometown Singapore. I feel Chennai is a home away from home. Comparatively Chennai is more thickly populated than Singapore. People are basically friendly both in Chennai and Singapore where English is widely spoken. Both are very attractive tourist spots. Chennai is my second home. Chennai is an epitome of beauty!
