2017 CGS‐SOS Dinner Lecture Foundation Challenge and the Observational Method – 2013 Rankine Lecture
Zelazny Most Copper Tailings Disposal Facility Wednesday, February 22, 2017
St. Bernard Church, 1789 Lawrence Ave W, Toronto, ON, M6L 1E3 (https://goo.gl/maps/66Eah9RwiFv)
Evening Program: 5:30 PM Cocktails and Socializing 6:30 PM Dinner 7:30 PM Lecture
Abstract: The presentation will cover the experience of the International Board of Expert in assisting the KGHM (Polish acronym for Copper Mine and Mill Company) in the development of one the world’s largest copper tailings disposal facility located in South-West Poland. As with all tailings dams, the Zelazny Most disposal poses a number of challenges to the geotechnical engineers, in particular the flow liquefaction of the stored tailings, which potentially threatens the stability of the confining dams. This, in turn, depends on the mechanical behaviour of the foundation soils. This latter issue has turned out to be the main factor controlling the development of the disposal, a consequence of the extremely complex Pleistocene geological history of the area, which had generated extensive glaciotectonic phenomena in the underlying very high plasticity Pliocene clay. As a result of the above, the complexity of geological and geotechnical settings made it extremely difficult, if not impossible, in the development of geological and geotechnical models, leading to the decision of the KGHM to develop the facility under the strict application of the Peck’s observational method (1969). In view of the above, the lecture will be mostly focusing on the foundation problem, being aware that the flow failure tailings represent another relevant geotechnical challenge. This issue is kept under control by means of the observational method corroborated by a constant effort in the geotechnical characterization of tailing by in situ testing and laboratory testing of high quality undisturbed samples. Speaker: Dr. Michele Jamiolkowski. Professor Michele Jamiolkowski is an internationally recognized expert in geotechnical engineering. He was President of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSMFG) from 1994 to 1997 and the Chairman of the International Committee for the Safeguard of the Leaning Tower of Pisa from 1990 to 2001. Professor Jamiolokowski has received many honors and awards, such as, the Karl Terzaghi award and the Ralph B. Peck award from ASCE (USA), and the Italian Prize for ‘Savior of the Arts’. He has presented numerous invited lectures, such as the Terzaghi Oration (Istanbul), the Ralph B. Peck Lecture (Atlanta), the Victor de Mello Lecture (Lisbon) and the Rankine Lecture (London).
