TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the education of young people. In ancient Rome, teachers of boys had to resign their posts in order to become catechumens, since the education of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public education has been so attuned to other values that creative solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, government schools had a goal of “Anglicizing” the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of “hedge schools.” In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cottages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmasters provided eager students with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and “civil disobedience” ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her companions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that di-minished their love of learning and threatened their faith. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Altar Flower Dedication Worship in our church is an experience of beauty. The flowers in the sanctuary are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday in memory, thanksgiving or celebration for people or events that are important to that donor. There

will be one dedication per Weekend. The cost for the flowers is $65 or $100. If you would like to make such a gift, please contact Angie O'Neill at 382-2504. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for contribution to the beauty of our worship.

News from SVdP: We received 44 calls in July and were able to assist 18 families. Two families asked for and received an average of $18 worth of food from our pantry. Eight families needed assistance with their utility bills, on which we spent an average of $419.00 each. Of those eight families, five also requested food and received an average of $19 worth of food from our pantry. We had eight families call us for help in paying their rent. Each of those families received an average $708 in assistance. Four of the eight families also requested food and received an average of $21 worth of food from our pantry. We also had one family re-ceive assistance with $226 in household goods. Thank you for your generosity over the past month. Two members of the Nativity Conference visited with and as-sisted a married couple this past week. They need your prayers, please. The husband lost his job after being injured at work and everything went downhill from there. They could not pay the rent on the home and have been living in a motel room for over a year. They were about to be evicted because they were out of money. They were also out of food when we arrived. Both hus-band and wife have job prospects they hope will come through for them. It will be tough because they will need to rely on oth-ers for rides to and from work because they have no transporta-tion. Again, please remember this couple in your prayers. Thank you. God’s Blessings, Dawn Campbell “You will find out that Charity is a heavy burden to carry, heavier than the kettle of soup and the full basket. But you will keep your gentleness and your smile. It is not enough to give soup and bread. This the rich can do. You are the servant of the poor, always smiling and good-humored. They are your mas-ters, terribly sensitive and exacting master you will see. And the uglier and the dirtier they will be, the more unjust and in-sulting, the more love you must give them. It is only for your love alone that the poor will forgive you the bread you give to them.” St. Vincent de Paul

NOT AGAINST US Like Moses before him, Jesus corrects his disciples’ misunderstanding of the gift of the Spirit. They saw people who were not of their company casting out demons and do ing other works such as Jesus had done. Jesus points out that no one who does a good deed in his name can be opposed to him at the same time. He goes on to point out the importance of the “little ones,”: the poor, simple people, children, the meek ones who are not important in the world. It is to them that he was sent, not to the wealthy and the self-righteous. He underscores the importance of small works done in faith, as well as big works like driving out demons. “Anyone who gives you a cup of water . . . because you belong to Christ . . . will surely not lose his reward” (Mark 9:41). God builds the com-ing reign little by little in our actions, however small and unas-suming, when they are done out of love of God and neighbor. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Scheduling Events at the Church

To All Ministry Leaders and Nativity Groups: We are a growing and vibrant Parish Community and I ask this special request of you. Please remember that we are a family of worship and share our God given gifts and church space together. And as we continually grow in our ministries, I ask that group leaders please submit your yearly calendar by email or in writing to Angie O’Neill . We have limited meeting spaces that fill up very quickly and it is most appreciated if all will com-municate with [email protected] for scheduling all events. The Office Calendar is the Official Church Calen-dar. If there are conflicts in dates and times, we hope all of you are willing to work together to coordinate usage of our building and grounds. Thank you for your patience and understanding and for working together as a very large and faithful family. May God continue to bless each of us and the work we do as The Catholic Church of the Nativity. Fr. Robert
