TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, there was the usual buzz of speculation about likely successors. Cardinal Agajanian, Pa-triarch of the Armenians, was highly thought of as a likely choice. This took many Catholics by surprise, since he had never celebrated the same liturgy as Pope Pius, but followed ancient Armenian customs according to the Eastern Church, which veils the Eucharisic liturgy from sight by a series of curtains, and in which the priest kneels while the people stand for Communion. In the years that followed, the Second Vatican Council would affirm the dignity and independence of the Eastern Churches, in complete union with Rome, yet different in pat-terns of life and worship. We have the same faith, the same sac-raments, and the same pope. Yet everywhere in the world our separate Churches are combined into families held together by the ministry of bishops. All of this serves as warning: If you ever say, “But we’ve always done it this way,” you are on very thin ice indeed! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Parishioners we have many prayer shawls - if you are visiting a sick or homebound person, please take a prayer shawl to them. Thank you!

Altar Flower Dedication Worship in our church is an experience of beauty. The flowers in the sanctuary are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday in memory, thanksgiving or celebration for people or events that are important to that donor. There will be one dedication per Weekend. The cost for the flowers is $65 or $100. If you would like to make such a gift, please contact Angie O'Neill at 382-2504. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for contribution to the beauty of our worship.

FOOD FOR THE SICK If you are interested in preparing food for parishioners in need, please call Susan Hanna at 337-5745.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN HOLY MASS

DO

Fast one hour before Mass Show up at least a few minutes early and try coming as close to the altar possible. Cross yourself with Holy Water on entering and leaving the church. Genuflect toward the altar and Tabernacle when enter ing and leaving pews or bow your head if unable to genuflect. Put cell phones on silent/airplane mode. Remove hats. Gentlemen offer your seat to any lady who is standing. Sit in middle of pews leaving end seats open for those who arrive after you. Sit quietly while in church. Dress modestly and appropriately. Prepare your offering before Mass. Respect the worship. Come to the altar during Communion. If you are Catholic, bow before receiving Holy Communion. If not Catholic or in a state of grace, bow with hands crossed to receive a blessing. Pray after Mass or sit quietly in the Chapel if you can. Leave quietly.

DO NOT

Use cell phones. Never chew gum in Church! Read THIS bulletin during Mass. Bring food and drink into Church. Receive from the Chalice if you are sick. Leave early BEFORE the Procession has ended.

From Father Robert’s Desk - August 1, 2019 My Dear Friends in Christ; You will notice something different in this month’s packet of Sunday offering envelopes. After careful comparison, we have chosen a new offering envelope program with Our Sunday Visi-tor of Huntington, Indiana. This name may sound familiar as it is a publisher of many Catholic periodicals, books and pam-phlets. This program offers us a better means of address corrections, new parishioner start-up, and communication with our office computer programs. While you will notice few changes on the envelopes themselves, I hope you will find them more colorful and appreciative of your sacrifice. Your parishioner number will remain the same as will our col-lection schedule. As always, we do offer an on-line alternative for making your contributions . Thank you for your continued support of Church of the Nativity. May God Bless you always.

FAITH AND HOPE Faith and hope are closely united in today’s read-ings. The Israelites knew when the Passover was coming, and so were not in fear, but had faith and courage, “putting into effect with one accord the di-vine institution.” In this we can see a foretelling of the Eucharist that we celebrate according to Christ’s command, “Do this in memory of me.” We see that Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob died in faith, although they did not see fulfillment of the promise. We live in hope that our faith will be fulfilled every time we celebrate this sacrament. We too are not to be afraid, but to have hope that our faith will be fulfilled in the coming of Christ. Scheduling Events at the Church

To All Ministry Leaders and Nativity Groups: We are a growing and vibrant Parish Community and I ask this special request of you. Please remember that we are a family of worship and share our God given gifts and church space to-gether. And as we continually grow in our ministries, I ask that group leaders please submit your yearly calen-dar by email or in writing to Angie O’Neill . We have limited meeting spaces that fill up very quickly and it is most appreciated if all will communicate by email with angie.oneill @nativity.cdom.org for scheduling all events. The Office Calendar is the Official Church Calendar. If there are conflicts in dates and times, we hope all of you are willing to work together to coordinate usage of our building and grounds. Thank you for your patience and understanding and for working together as a very large and faithful family. May God continue to bless each of us and the work we do as The Catholic Church of the Nativity. Fr. Robert
