TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In many church buildings constructed in the early twentieth century, there is a window or statue of Pope St. Pius X. Often, these windows were purchased with coins collected by grateful children, since in 1910 a decree admitted much younger chil-dren to First Communion. Before then, only teenagers were customarily confirmed and then admitted to the Eucharist. What we often think is ancient practice in fact sometimes has fairly shallow roots, in this case only ten decades. For centuries, Communion had marked the end of formal religious education, but a hundred years ago, Pius X located it at the point at which a child could express a desire for the sacrament and receive it with understanding. In 1917 a new code of canon law deter-mined that age to be about seven, and this practice was ob-served almost everywhere until the beginning of the Second Vatican Council forty years ago. In a growing number of dioceses, recent practice has restored the sacramental order that Pius X’s generous decree upset, and increasingly confirmation is celebrated before First Commun-ion. But the gift Pius gave to the children of the Roman Church remains firm: everywhere we admit children to the Lord’s table. Where the traditional order has been restored, seven-year-old children are confirmed before First Communion. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Called to Serve: Adults are encouraged to become approved Liturgical Ministers by attending classes held periodically at Nativity. Please call the office, leave your name and phone number if you are interested in becoming a Lay Minister. New parishioners: if you are already commissioned as a Lector or Eucharist Minister, please consider continuing your service at Nativity. Contact Angie O'Neill at the church Office for more information.

Altar Flower Dedication Worship in our church is an experience of beauty. The flowers in the sanctuary are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday in memory, thanksgiving or celebration for people or events that are important to that donor. There will be one dedication per Weekend. The cost for the flowers is $65 or $100. If you would like to make such a gift, please contact Angie O'Neill at 382-2504. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for contribution to the beauty of our worship.

FOOD FOR THE SICK If you are interested in preparing food for parishioners in need, please call Susan Hanna at 337-5745.

IMPORTANT! ALL MINISTRY LEADERS NEED TO CON-TACT Angie O’Neill BY EMail BEFORE HOLDING ANY MEETINGS OR CLASSES.

My name is Tommy Camp and during August I will be reworking the front garden for my Eagle Scout Service Project. I started my scouting experience right here at Nativity as a founding member of Pack 258, so I wanted to repay the church for clearing new paths for me by reworking the front garden. The project is cur-rently in its fundraising and planning stage, so your financial sup-port is very important. Donations can be made online under the “Tommy Camp Eagle Project” on the church website.

Nativity Information ATTENTION LADIES

WOULD YOU LIKE FOR YOUR HUSBAND, FIANCE OR BOY FRIEND TO BE: A better Catholic? A better father? A better husband, fiancé or boyfriend? More active in your church? A role model for youth? If the answer to any of these questions is YES, then urge him to join the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal lay Catholic men’s organization who are the Champions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ and pray her Rosary often. Support the Priest. They are the Ushers in church, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, They are leaders in other ministries in our church and they do fund raising for charities like: Special Olympics, The MR Foundation (an organization that helps intellectually challenged persons), Coats for Kids and many more. If your husband, fiancé or boyfriend joins the Knights of Columbus because you ask him to do so, he will thank you after being a member for a period of time. Do it today, you will be glad that you did! When you see a member of the Knights of Columbus at church (he will be wearing a name badge to identify him as a member), ask him for a form 100 to give to your man to fill out to join the Knights. The only requirement for becoming a member of the Knights of Columbus is to be a practicing Catholic male who is over 18 years old and in good standing with the Church.

Dear Parishioners, The Covid-19 virus has played havoc with all our lives, as well as those served by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Nativity Conference. As of Monday, July 27th, the conference has received 160 calls requesting assistance since the beginning of the month (July). I should note here that most of those calls were from people who have not asked us for assistance in the past. We are sincerely grateful for your food and monetary donations. Because of you, our conference has assisted 31 families this month and although we have helped a couple of people pay their rent or delivered food to a family who needed it, most of our calls were from families who needed help in paying their utility bills. Please keep our families in your thoughts during this time. I have spoken with people who have/had Covid-19, who have children with the virus, or who have been laid-off or lost jobs due to Covid-19. Say an extra prayer, a decade of the rosary, or light a candle, for the health and well-being of the families we serve. God’s Blessings, Dawn Campbell, SVdP Nativity Conference Secretary

THE PRESENCE OF GOD After the miracle of Jesus walking on wa-ter, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33). Most Chris-tians will probably never experience such a dramatic miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other moments. Per-haps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to de-velop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be sur-prised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HOLY LAND CRAFTS The coronavirus pandemic has forced thousands of pilgrims to leave the Holy Land. The streets of Bethlehem and Jerusalem are empty for quite some time. The cancellation of pilgrimages having a serious repercussions for

many Christian families. In the past, when the Holy Land experienced wartime conditions, some people managed to temporarily find an economic niche outside tourism. However, the pandemic measures have affected all business sectors, including olive wood industry, and everything to shut down. Even we as Holy Land Crafts & Pilgrimage group; are unable to lend them a hand during this difficult time because of the closures here in the U.S. Because our visit to your parish this year is unpredict-able, we humbly ask you to visit our website WWW.HOLYLANDCRAFTS.NET and browse through the beautiful hand carved religious items. We value your support through these unprecedented times. May God bless you and keep you safe.

SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN) (1891-1942) Aug 9 “Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ condemnation of their geno-cide, took into custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-practicing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in phi-losophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one sitting, then de-clared, “That is the Truth!” Baptized on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ initiation into the covenant of Abra-ham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecution of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
