TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On a summer day, with the windows open, we may hear the sound of church bells. Bells seem to have come into church life in Irish monasteries around the seventh century, and spread around the Christian world by Irish monks on missionary jour-neys. By the eighth century, bells were standard equipment in even small parish churches. An ancient ceremony, once called the “baptism of the bells,” recognizes that the church bell has a voice to call people to awareness and summon them to worship, and even bestows a name on the bell. In a world without clocks or watches, the bell had an indis-pensable role. For calling monks in from the fields for prayer, or alerting far‑flung visitors, the bell’s voice was enhanced by hoisting it high into a tower. Soon it was learned that the sound of several bells clanging together in harmony imparted a sense of joy to great celebrations, and bell towers prospered, some chock full of bells. Different combinations of rings could indi-cate a death, a Mass, a wedding, a fast day, the curfew at the end of day, and the Angelus. Before electricity, bell-ringing was hard work indeed: the biggest bell in the Catholic world, in Cologne, Germany, weighs twenty‑seven tons! There’s no substitute for the resonant roar of a mighty bell; electric chimes are not eligi-ble for blessing! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Altar Flower Dedication Worship in our church is an experience of beauty. The flowers in the sanctuary are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday in memory, thanksgiving or celebration for people or events that are important to that donor. There will be one dedication per Weekend. The cost for the flowers is $65 or $100. If you would like to make such a gift, please contact Angie O'Neill at 382-2504. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for contribution to the beauty of our worship.

Sacramental Preparation Guidelines 1. Baptism (for infants up to six years of age) All parents must participate in the Parish infant baptismal preparation program before a Baptism can be performed. Please contact Angie O'Neill to schedule an appointment. At least one-month notice is required for scheduling Baptisms. For first time parents: this session is required before a Baptism may be scheduled. For parents of more than one child: please schedule a baptismal preparation. 2. Rites of Christian Initiantion (R.C.I.A.) All individuals six years of age and older who wish to be initiated into the Roman Catholic Community participate in special formational meetings, instruction and prescribed rites that lead to initiation at the Easter Vigil for most or other times, depending on particular circumstances. Separate tracts are established for children and adults. Contact the parish office at any time during the year for more information. 3. First Eucharist, Confirmation, First Penance It is the policy of the Diocese of Memphis that any child wanting to celebrate the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation and/or Penance must be enrolled in a parish-based catechetical program for one year prior to beginning preparation for the sacraments. We recognize and support parents as the primary educators of their children in matters of faith but also acknowledge that the local church has the responsibility of ensuring the proper catechetical formation of those who desire the Church's sacraments. 4. Matrimony Please call the parish office and schedule an appointment with the pastor at least 6 months in advance of the proposed wedding date. Church Law as well as diocesan and parish policy require that certain guidelines be met before a wedding may be scheduled. 5. Ministry to the Sick When a family member is hospitalized, call the parish office to request prayers and to arrange for a pastoral visit. According to the "Patient Privacy Act," it is the patient's and patient's family's responsibility to provide the patient's room number if a pastoral visit is desired. 6. Christian Burial Please call the parish office before making funeral arrangements to confirm the availability of the church and a priest or deacon if a Funeral Mass is to be celebrated.

CODE OF CANON LAW FOR BAPTISMS Parents must be registered & active members of the parish in which the Baptism will take place. Parents & Godparents must attend the Baptismal preparation class. God-parents must be confirmed Catholics, at least 16 sixteen years of age, registered & active members of a parish. Proof of registra-tion is required. Non-Catholics can serve as Christian Wit-nesses. We want to Baptize your child but cannot do so unless these requirements are met.

Scheduling Events at the Church

To All Ministry Leaders and Nativity Groups: We are a growing and vibrant Parish Community and I ask this special request of you. Please remember that we are a family of worship and share our God given gifts and church space to-gether. And as we continually grow in our ministries, I ask that group leaders please submit your yearly calen-dar by email or in writing to Angie O’Neill . We have limited meeting spaces that fill up very quickly and it is most appreciated if all will communicate by email with angie.oneill @nativity.cdom.org for scheduling all events. The Office Calendar is the Official Church Calendar. If there are conflicts in dates and times, we hope all of you are willing to work together to coordinate usage of our building and grounds. Thank you for your patience and understanding and for working together as a very large and faithful family. May God continue to bless each of us and the work we do as The Catholic Church of the Nativity. Fr. Robert
