THE NEW COVENANT Today’s first reading is an enormously important passage, not only in the history of the Jewish people, but also for us as disciples of Jesus, who see in it a foreshadowing of the Christian dispensation. The prophet announces that God has chosen to forgive the peo-ple, and that as a sign of divine forgiveness a new covenant will be established. Contrasting the new covenant with the one made with Moses on Mount Sinai, Jeremiah says that the new covenant will be written on the people’s hearts rather than on tablets of stone. No longer will the community’s tradition be the sole bearer of the covenant; henceforth, God will speak directly and person-ally to each individual, forgiving sin and calling for a return to God in faithfulness. No longer will mere outward compliance with the dictates of the Law suffice; henceforth, God asks for an obedience that springs from the depths of one’s heart. Precisely that kind of obedience is highlighted in today’s second reading, where the author of the Letter to the Hebrews describes Jesus as the mediator of the new covenant whose obedience has made him the source of salvation for all who, in turn, obey him.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULT The Scrutinies
Today, the 5th Sunday of Lent, we celebrate the 3rd Scrutiny at the 10 am Mass. Again the Liturgy of the Word provides us with the help we need for prayerful introspection, sur-render, and conversion. In today’s Gospel we lie with Lazarus within the tomb of obliv-
ion and death, built with the stones of our own sins, until Jesus reaches out his hand and pulls us from the pit. In a minor Rite during the RCIA session, those seeking to enter the Catholic Church are entrusted with the words of our Lord on prayer. As a summary of the entire Christian life, the Lord’s Prayer is a model of that relationship of trust that we are invited to enter as children of our Heavenly Father. The Rite symbolizes the passing down of our heritage of prayer taught to us by Jesus and nurtures by the Holy Spirit.

The children in our religious education pro-grams soon will be busy preparing candy filled eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt. We need plastic eggs and small, wrapped candy to put

Holy Ghost School is presenting Keeping the Promise Alive Re-fresher Workshop (ENGLISH) scheduled for next Satur-day, March 31, 2012. It will take place here at Holy Ghost Hall and will begin at 10:00am. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER ONLINE IF YOU WISH TO ATTEND THIS SESSION. Please arrive at least 30 minutes ahead of time to complete the sign-in process. Once the session starts, the doors will be closed. All parishioners/volunteers/staff who took the Protecting God’s Children Workshop between the years 2003-2005 MUST TAKE THIS WORKSHOP. If you are not able to attend this workshop, there are several locations already scheduled on line if this date is not convenient for you.
