Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time PARISH MISSION

The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ.

but their hearts are far from me;”Mark 7: 6

MONICA WILCZAK, DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Monica Wilczak joined St. Barnabas as Director of Development in the middle of

August 2012. She is responsible for the stewardship and development efforts of St.

Barnabas with a focus on managing programs that allow parishioners to contribute

their time, unique talents, and financial resources to our community and parish.

Monica works closely with the Administration Commission, Development Committee,

Finance Board, and Endowment Foundation. She has more than ten years of

development experience for education and organizations arts in Chicago, is currently

involved with Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP), and has been active in Southwest Beverly Improvement Associa-

tion (SWBIA) and BAPA efforts. Monica is a lifelong southsider and proud to be a member of the Beverly and

St. Barnabas communities, along with her family, since 2005.

At this time of year, a lot of folks stay up late to agonize over their fantasy

football picks. They may be looking for a dominant quarterback, or a

game-breaking running back. Some might prefer a big middle line-backer for their

first pick. The truth is that the most powerful and important person on the field is the

guy in the striped shirt with the yellow flag. He makes countless judgments during the

game that affect its outcome. Players three times his size obey his every word, because he is the keeper of the rules.

If there were no referees, if there were no rules and no one to enforce them, there would be no game at all.

So it is in daily life. If we are to enjoy an ordered and civil life we need laws and the governance to uphold them.

Our Church, too, is knit together by dogma, doctrine, and practice that help define our common life. Were it not so,

we would wander off on our own way, and cease to be a community.

But the Gospel reminds us that rules are not themselves the truth – they can only point to the truth. Faith is more

about our relationship with God and our neighbor than it is about adherence to a set of rules. That is the tension at

the heart of Jesus’ dispute with the Pharisees. Jesus accused the religious leaders of ritual emptiness, of forgetting the

life and meaning that underlie the regulations. The original purpose for the ceremony of washing hands and utensils

was to remind believers that those who approach God must do so with a clean heart. But over time became easier

just to do the ritual of hand-washing than to remember what it meant. For Jesus, it is not enough to have clean hands.

God wants a clean heart. The Pharisees missed the joy of the meal because they were so caught up in a ritual that had

become empty.

We have been offered the invitation to sit at table with the Lord in the Eucharist. I expect that we will have

washed our hands before we come to church, but it is much more important that we let God wash our hearts. Then

we can come together with hearts full of expectation for what will take place during the sacrificial banquet, and

rejoice together in the feast of God’s presence among the people he loves.

The Pastor’s Mutterings

Next Weekend: The Mass Journal Next weekend, during all the Masses, we will present a copy of the “Mass

Journal” to everyone who comes to Mass from age 7 on up. We ask you carry

your copy of the “Mass Journal” in your pocket or purse to Mass each Sunday

for the next year, and at some point during the Mass, perhaps in the quiet time

after Communion, to take a moment to write down in your journal the answer to this prayer: “God, show

me one way in this Mass I can be a better version of myself this week.” Just write a few words about

how you heard God calling you to grow, and date your entry.

On the way home from church or around your table, you might ask your children: “What did God say

to you at church today?” Imagine the good things that could happen by talking to each other about what

God is asking of you and your family. You might use your Mass Journal in daily prayer and allow it to

stimulate your conversation with God. After a year of entries, you will look back and see some of the

important issues and questions of your life, and how your faith has grown.

When we listen to the voice of God in our lives, it is then that the scriptures, homily, religion class, adult

education courses, and the phenomenal beauty of the sacraments become more apparent. The “Mass

Journal” can help us to listen to God’s voice.

So that’s it! We invite you to give the “Mass Journal” a try. Come to Mass each Sunday prepared to ask

God to show you one way in this Mass that you can be a better version of yourself. And then see what

good things may happen!

In today’s Mass we hear James urge us: “Welcome the word . . . Be doers of the word and not hearers only . . .”

After hearing the readings for today’s celebration of the Mass, how might you, in the next week, “be a doer of the word?” Be specific.

ST. BARNABAS DIALOGUE ON CURRENT ISSUES

Please join other parishioners on Thursday September 13th, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Convent East meeting room, for

an opportunity to engage in dialogue "in the public square" among St. Barnabas Parishioners. The dialogue will

emanate from reading and reflections on the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (YSCCB), offering,

“Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” as our starting Point. The teaching document will help us discern the

challenges and responsibilities of Catholics for ongoing participation in public life. Please RSVP with the rectory at

773-779-1166 or [email protected]. If you register we will send you a copy of the reading material.

Jr. High Youth Ministry Kick Off

Great America Fright Fest The Jr. High Youth Ministry is excited to invite you a private party at Great America

on Friday September 28. This is a great opportunity to go to Fright Fest because there

are considerably less people at the park. You can more easily get on all of the rides as

there are little to no lines for even the most popular of rides. Normally you can ride 5-

8 roller coasters in one day. At our Fright Fest party you can ride 5-8 coasters MANY TIMES.

Our party is before Fright Fest begins for the general public. We hope all of the 6-8th grade teens of the parish will join

us. We have LIMITED space so sign up EARLY. Permission Slips are available on the parish website under youth

ministry current events. Don’t forget to include your annual registration. Call or email the youth ministry office at 773-

429-9614 or [email protected] with questions.

HIGH SCHOOL CO-Ed Sports Teams

Basketball is beginning. The deadline to sign up is September 15th.

High school teens are encouraged to come out and compete with friends for Basketball, Volleyball, Softball

and Soccer. To make it even more fun, the teams are Co-Ed and we compete against other Parish Youth Ministry

Teams. Individual teens can enter to be a part of our team or you can gather a group of friends and join together.

You do not have to be experienced to play or be a sports fanatic. It is a great way for experienced as well as

inexperienced players to be a part of a team sport. Everyone plays!

We play mostly Thursday nights between 6:30-9pm and an occasional 2nd evening. It is not an intense

league, it is not a huge time commitment, it is perfect for just a night out to have fun. We compete against our fellow

Catholic parishes on the Southside of Chicago and its Suburbs.

Due to “IHSA” rules which prevent you from playing for two teams during one season, we offer our sports

on a different schedule than your high school. For example, IHSA Basketball is a winter sport and Volleyball is a

fall sport so we play Basketball in the fall and Volleyball in the winter.

YOUNG ADULTS AND COLLEGE TEENS OF THE PARISH, WE NEED COACHES AND REFS

FOR OUR TEAMS. Please consider volunteering some time to the high school teens of our parish.

Sign Up forms on parish website under youth ministry current events.

at the 10:00 a.m. mass. Children will be dismissed from Mass after the Opening Prayer and will return during the

JOIN THE ST. BARNABAS ADULT CHOIR 2012-13 SEASON

Music is an exciting and fulfilling ministry with the power to express what words cannot. Music touches the soul, heals the heart and enhances our prayer. It is a wonderful way to become involved in our parish as we give back to God the talents and gifts God has bestowed upon us. St. Barnabas parish is looking to continue developing a full, vibrant and energetic choir including both the young and the old gathered as one in prayer as we lead the song of the assembly at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday liturgies from September through May. We rehearse once a week on Wednesday evenings from 7:00—9:00 p.m.in the church. Anyone from high school age and up who loves to sing is invited and encouraged to join us. No experience is necessary! We are also seeking experienced instrumentalists who would be willing to share their gifts and talents with the faith community of St. Barnabas. Please consider joining us for a spiritually and musically uplifting experience! Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, September 5th at 7:00 p.m. in church. Feel free to bring a friend. 2012-2013 SEASON

The beautiful sound of children’s voices raised in song in praise of God is a very uplifting and moving experience. We would like to continue expanding our full, vibrant and energetic children’s choir at St. Barnabas to further enhance our liturgies.

Any student, in grades 3-8 in Fall of 2012, is invited to join the St. Barnabas Children’s Choir. Rehearsals will be held every Wednesday from 2:45 – 4:00 p.m. in the church beginning on Wednesday, September 5, 2012. As the Choir continues to grow we will be able to build on the foundation we have set by doing more work with the Orff xylophones and by adding more challenging music to our repertoire. The Children’s Choir will lead the music at various liturgies from September through May. A detailed schedule will be distributed at a later date.

Anyone who loves to sing is encouraged to join us in this fun, exciting and fulfilling ministry. It is a wonderful opportunity for the young members of our faith commu-nity to learn more about their faith and to serve both God and our parish.
