I will be away on vacation thru February 17th. I just wanted you to know who would be celebrating the Masses while I am away. The Consolata Fathers and Father Roy Quesea will be covering our daily Masses.

I am grateful to my brother priests for celebrating these Masses so I could get away for a bit. I will keep you in my prayers while I am away and I ask for yours as well.

God’s blessings,

(Please note: Tuesday evening Adoration will be suspended while Father Charlie is away on vacation – it will resume again on 2/21/17)

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1 SIR 15:15-20

If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you; if you trust in God, you too shall live; he has set before you fire and water to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand. Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given him. Immense is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power, and all-seeing. The eyes of God are on those who fear him; he understands man's every deed. No one does he command to act unjustly, to none does he give license to sin.

Responsorial Psalm R. You have the words of everlasting life.

Reading 2 1 COR 2:6-10 Brothers and sisters: We speak a wisdom to those who are mature, not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God's wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for, if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written: What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.

Gospel MT 5:17-37

Or MT 5:20-22A, 27-28, 33-34A, 37

Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter

will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. "You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; and whoever says to his brother, 'Raqa,' will be answerable to the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.

"You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.

"It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce. But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife - unless the marriage is unlawful - causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

"Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your 'Yes' mean 'Yes,' and your 'No' mean 'No.' Anything more is from the evil one."

February 12, 2017 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom

of heaven.” MATTHEW 5:20 The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. At-tending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

Scripture Corner ON ANY GIVEN DAY ...

God can do new and amazing things each day. Since God is the same today as he was when he created the earth, it follows that he is creating something new and exciting this very day. (Heb 13:8)

Each day God can make a new creation out of nothing, and can create good from bad (Romans 8:28), making each day a new creation in Him.

Therefore, if we've had one bad day or many bad days, it doesn't mean tomorrow will also be bad. The book of James tells us " you have no idea what kind of life will be yours tomorrow" (James 4:14). We can never lose hope, because God's love and mercy come anew every morning ( Lamentations 3:22–23).

That is why Jesus teaches us to pray only for the needs of the day (Matthew 6:11), to not worry about tomorrow, and to deal with each day as it comes (Matthew 6:33–34). Therefore, "today if you should hear his voice, harden not your hearts".(Hebrews 3:7-8)

NEVER LOSE HOPE, FOR GOD CAN CREATE A FUTURE FULL OF HOPE

FOR YOU ON ANY GIVEN DAY (Her 29:11).

Lord Jesus, let my heart sing for joy in your presence. Give me eyes of faith to recognize your presence and fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may walk in your way of love and peace. Please consider joining the Evangelization Team as we help ourselves and others know the Faith, live the Faith and share the Faith. If interested, please contact Patty Klag at [email protected]

Throughout our lives we often find ourselves, loved ones, or friends in need of prayers. The St. Cecilia Prayer Group is committed to praying for all your special intentions. You can request prayers through the prayer box at the back of the church. The Prayer group will pray for your intentions as requested. The wooden prayer box will be brought up weekly with the Offertory Gifts during the weekend masses. Please know that your prayer requests will be kept confidential and that you will be prayed for.

Open Your Heart and Home to a Foster Child

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen is seeking loving families to foster children of all ages, who have been abused, neglected or have had multiple out of home placements, through its Treatment Family Homes Program, contracted by New Jersey’s Department of Children and Families.

The goal for the children in this program is to leave foster care and achieve permanency through reunification with their families, adoption, or independent living. Catholic Charities provides these resilient children with individual and family therapy, assistance with educational and medical needs, and independent living skills to help them reach their full potential. Applicants must have adequate space for a child and complete a home study which includes background checks, references, interviews, and a home inspection. All Catholic Charities licensed families receive initial and ongoing specialized training, 24 hour emergency access to staff, respite services, monthly reimbursement for the child’s expenses and support from experienced families. For more information about the program, please visit www.ccdom.org or contact Miguelina Nunez at 866-247-HOME (4663) or at [email protected].
