CHAMBER News & Notes

The West Michigan Chamber Coalition—which includes the Chambers of Commerce in Grand Haven, Grand Rap-ids, Holland and Muskegon—has released the 2013 West Michigan Regional Minority- and Woman-Owned Business Directory that features more than 1,400 businesses. The directory lists busi-nesses that are at least 51 percent minority- or female-owned, both alphabetically and by business category. It

is designed to help these segments of the West Michigan com-munity gain exposure and grow their companies. It’s also a tool for companies looking to diversify their supplier base and those seeking to develop new business.

Visit www.grandrapids.org/diversity to view and download the directory.

During March 6-8, West Michigan job seekers and manufactur-ing companies participated in the three-day employability pro-gram held at GVSU’s Kirkhof Center. This program differs greatly from traditional job fairs by of-fering extended interaction between the job seeker and HR professionals from participating companies. This collaboration leads to better hiring decisions and ultimately more productive companies. Working in teams facilitated by the HR representatives, the ReadyNOW! participants attended skill and development work-shops, asked questions directly to an employer panel, and re-ceived feedback on their interviewing and resume writing skills. On the last day, the participants all received at least two job interviews for more than 130 open positions with manufactur-ers. Many people found new jobs and companies were able to satisfy some of their hiring needs. We would like to thank all the participating companies and job seekers for helping make this program a success. The Cham-ber is committed to advancing the West Michigan economy with programs like ReadyNOW! that help develop a diverse workforce and retain area talent.

SMART BOTTOMS, INC.Christy Malone has grown her business from the bottom up… literally. In 2011, Christy started Smart Bottoms, Inc. as more than a business, but a passion for cloth diaper-ing. In the process, she has created a green business that benefits parents, the environment, and her family—while setting an example for her daughters. “I love that for every baby di-apered in our products we are helping to keep approximately 2.5 tons of disposable diapers out of the landfills!” Christy ex-claimed. “Most of all, I love being a positive role model to my little girls—allowing them to see firsthand what hard work and success looks like.” “To be successful, you have to have a level of persever-ance that really sets successful entrepreneurs apart from all the rest,” Christy explained. Today, Smart Bottoms, Inc. is a successful manufac-turer, wholesaler, and online retailer of organic, modern cloth diapers and accessories serving North America and Europe. Smart Bottoms offers a full line of 100-percent-American-made reusable diapers, training pants, swim diapers and other diapering essentials. Their unique, patent-pending designs and features have set Smart Bot-toms cloth diapers apart in the industry—while making cloth diapering easier and more economical for parents. “Many families in America are missing an entire gen-eration of cloth diaperers,” noted Christy. “I want to show them how easy, healthy, and inexpensive it is to cloth dia-per their baby!” Christy recently joined the Chamber to develop better relationships with manufacturers and entrepreneurs here in Grand Rapids. “The Chamber exemplifies everything that you would expect from a great organization that sup-ports local business and the individuals that are working to grow our local economy.”

Check out www.smartbottoms.com to discover more about Smart Bottoms, Inc.

Founded originally as Swiss Clean Inc. in 1972, Phoenix Floor Care has evolved from its roots as a distributor of floor cleaning sup-plies for vinyl composition tile floors to a manufacturer of its own cleaning emulsions and seller of commercial-grade floor care equipment, including a line of battery-operated floor cleaners. Today, Phoenix Floor Care remains committed to providing floor

cleaning equip-ment and chemi-cals to help cus-tomers maintain clean, shiny floors

at the lowest cost. “I love to see how great someone’s floor looks after we’ve worked on it. It’s so shiny, it looks wet,” noted David Conti, presi-dent and owner of the company for the last three years. “All of our products are designed and tested to work together with our equipment to give customers the fastest, easiest route to a great looking floor.” After 25 years in business, Phoenix Floor Care is the only re-maining U.S. company that specializes in spray cleaning with products that work without water and signature machines that can save up to 40 percent on floor care labor. “Our unique spray cleaning system saves thousands of gallons of water plus our safe citrus-base solution restores the finish by including a small amount of synthetic wax—making floor cleaning greener over-all,” David said. As a new business owner with an established enterprise, David said learning operations management and cost control has made the biggest difference to his business during the first couple of years. In his growth efforts, David noted that the CEO/Management Roundtable program and Breakfast with Legisla-tors events have been very worthwhile activities, stating “ I really value the interaction with other business owners.”

Five Steps from Startup to Success, from the front cover

As the medical profession continues to focus on ways to provide safer, higher-quality care to patients, and to rein in the cost increases in the health care industry, more people than ever are taking a closer look at the amount of waste and unnec-essary care that is provided. Many experts agree that the current way health care is

Choosing Healthcare WiselyDr. Rose Ramirez, Medical Director for the Spectrum Health Physician Alliance

Increasing health care costs are a top concern for Chamber members. The article below highlights an important initiative designed to help patients—your employees—control the costs of their care.

delivered in the U.S. contains too much waste—with some stating that as much as 30 percent of care delivered is duplica-tive or unnecessary and may not actually improve people’s health. The Choosing Wisely® campaign is an initiative of the American Board of Inter-nal Medicine Foundation focused on en-couraging physicians, patients, and other health care stakeholders to think about and discuss medical tests and procedures that may be unnecessary and, in some in-stances, even potentially cause harm. As part of Choosing Wisely®, each par-ticipating specialty society has created lists of Five Things Physicians and Patients Should Question that provide specific, evidence-based recommendations physi-cians and patients should discuss to help make wise decisions about the most ap-propriate care to fit the patient’s individ-ual situation. As of February 21, 2013, over 35 phy-sician societies and organizations (rep-resenting over 500,000 doctors) have joined the Choosing Wisely® campaign. Lists containing over 90 recommenda-tions are available about tests or treat-ments that may constitute unnecessary care. Later this year, even more lists will

be published. Consumer Reports, the nation’s leading independent, non-profit consumer orga-nization, has also joined the campaign to provide resources for consumers and physicians to engage in these important conversations. They are coordinating a number of consumer-oriented organiza-tions to help disseminate information and create user-friendly tools to educate patients on making wise healthcare deci-sions. Visit and share with your employees the information at www.choosingwisely.org for more about the Choosing Wisely® campaign. The website also offers many patient resources and all of the lists of medical questions available for review and download.

Visit the majesty of our nation’s capital and bring the voice of West Michigan business directly to “The Hill.” Slated for April 23-24, the West Michigan D.C. Fly-In is a unique opportunity to lobby Congress, the Administration, and Federal agencies on issues and projects critically im-portant to our region’s vitality and economic growth. The D.C. Fly-In trip includes a reception with our Congressional delegation, a break-fast with Michigan Senators, trips to the embassies of important trade partners, brief-ings with several federal departments, and more. Among the appointments scheduled is a meeting with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, a congressman representing Virginia’s 7th District and a former businessman who has emerged as a leading voice on the economy, job creation, and entrepreneur-ship in Congress. He has long been a key player in health care, fighting for greater choice for families and authoring the legislation that allowed Health Savings Accounts. If you’re interested in forming direct connections with our national leaders or want to raise awareness of West Michigan business issues on the national scene, then this trip is for you! Join your fellow business, civic, and community leaders from the West Michigan Chamber Coalition for the D.C. Fly-In.

3. Network with Those Who’ve Been ThereThere are a lot of entrepreneurs that have been in your shoes and made it successfully. Connect with them, learn from their mistakes, and benefit from their insights. The Chamber offers a myriad of networking opportunities—including the new En-ergize Your Business event—so you can learn and meet new people. At the top of the list is the Chamber’s CEO/Manage-ment Roundtable, which creates a confidential setting sharing business experiences. For more information on the Chamber’s business growth services, contact Janet Wyllie at [email protected] or 616.771.0331.

4. Stay Flexible, Think StrategicallyYou’ll need to stay flexible as you grow so you can continue to accommodate changing demands, and you’ll need to think stra-tegically to constantly evaluate what’s working and what’s not. A good strategic plan will serve you well as you look towards areas of future growth. The Edward Lowe Foundation (www.ed-wardlowe.org) has an excellent guide to get you started.

5. Stay Innovative, Do What You LoveAs you grow, it’s important to keep redefining yourself and your business. Innovation isn’t just for startups. Explore new prod-ucts, new services, new markets, new sales strategies. Most of all, keep doing what you’re passionate about. As an entrepre-neur, you get to be the visionary for your success; and as you grow, you have the chance to focus on the part of your business you like the best while others help you with the rest!

A shortage of quality drivers throughout the United States is having an impact on economic growth, and it is an issue that the Chamber and our members are taking seriously through legislative priorities and real world solutions. As the economy continues to recover, demand for moving goods is expected to increase rapidly, and the national shortage of quality drivers is an issue gaining increased recognition as a growing problem. A recent study by the American Trucking Association predicts that there could be nearly 250,000 unfilled driver positions nationwide in 10 years. The driver shortage issue was also highlighted in the Chamber’s 2012 West Michigan Logistics Assessment, a regional freight survey in which many of our members revealed they are struggling with the direct and indi-rect effects of a declining pool of quality truck drivers. In response to this problem, the Chamber’s Transportation Commit-tee has moved to include the issue in our legislative priorities. The committee is now looking to identify regional solutions and has formed a subcommittee to identify the causes and take action to address the problem. Two Chamber members have decided to tackle this issue head on, by partnering together. Baker College and ALTL, a full-service carrier in Hud-sonville, are now working together to offer a unique and innovative program for students looking to enter the trucking industry. The 20-week training pro-gram prepares students for an entry-level position as a local or long-distance driver of tractor trailers, heavy trucks, dump trucks, and tankers. Yet, it goes beyond the basics by providing trainees real-world experience and valuable interaction with experts from the field. “Baker College brings over 100 years of designing and delivering educational programs that are specifically created to meet market demands,” said Brian Jones, Campus Director for Baker College of Zeeland. “ALTL con-tributes the industry history and expertise that can only be realized through working in the trucking business on a daily basis. Together, the collaboration has allowed us to develop the benchmark trucking and logistics training pro-gram for the industry.” Visit www.baker.edu/programs/detail/truck-driving for more about the program and the partnership.

If you would like to join the Chamber’s Transportation Committee and help us work on issues affecting West Michigan businesses, please contact Joshua Lunger at [email protected] or 616.771.0336.

Diversity Visionary Award Sets Tone for a More Inclusive and Prosperous Grand RapidsOn March 20, over 250 people gathered to celebrate diversity-inclusion efforts in our community and honor our 2013 Diversity Visionary Award recipient Faye Richardson-Green. The evening also included an incredibly insightful keynote presentation about how diversity, inclusion and equity are linked to regional prosperity and where Grand Rapids stands on those measures. “Diversity is a fact of life for each and every one of us,” Richardson-Green declared dur-ing her award acceptance. “The real work is for us to take that diversity and develop it with intentionality, to deliberately find ways to create an inclusive environment that welcomes all people and generates equitable access to opportunity.” Keynote speaker Dr. Chris Benner echoed those same sentiments only minutes later as he discussed the nature of current economics, the research from his book Just Growth: Inclusion and Prosperity in America’s Metropolitan Regions, and his new findings about Grand Rapids. “In some communities, social inclusion and economic prosperity are intertwined in a virtu-ous cycle,” he said. “Communities that are able to tap into a diverse network of knowledge have the ability to better see, adapt, and respond to opportunities and challenges as they come.” “It turns out it’s not just what you know but who you know it with,” Dr. Benner summarized, adding that Grand Rapids has a strong history of equitable economic growth from the 1980’s and ‘90’s to build upon. The challenge ahead is to face emerging issues of poverty, income inequality, increasing immigration, and a racial generation gap in the metro region. Thank you to everyone who joined us to hear Dr. Benner at the Diversity Visionary Award Celebration and during his small group follow-up sessions the next day. Special thanks to all of our sponsors who made the event possible, especially our Diversity & Inclu-sion Underwriter, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, our Celebration Underwriter, Steelcase Inc., and our Corporate Benefactors Ernst & Young, Ferris State University, Varnum, and Warner, Norcross & Judd, LLP. Special thanks to our Award Sponsor Meijer and to Azkoul Productions for producing the tribute video about Faye. We would also like to thank our Associate Sponsors Amway, Cascade Engineering, Inc., Consumers Energy, ENCOMPASS, LLC, Grand Valley State University, Huizenga Group, Irwin Seating Company, Rockford Construction Company, Inc., Saint Mary’s Health Care, and Spectrum Health as well as our Entrepreneur Sponsors Junior Achievement of the Michigan Great Lakes, Inc. and Partners for a Racism-Free Community.
