Asbury United Methodist Church Newsletter
Serving God in the community for over 150 years
JULY & AUGUST 2018 | VOLUME 24 | ISSUE 7 & 8
Dear Asbury United Methodist Church Family,
It is important that your church’s Finance Committee keep you informed
concerning significant church finance issues as they arise.
For the first 13 weeks of 2018, our weekly offering totals were above the
previous year by over $4,700. However, after the first 23 weeks of 2018,
our weekly offering totals are now below the previous year by over
$4,700. These amounts include both our weekly envelope offerings and
our total Current Expense offerings.
Our Church Current Expense Treasurer reports that we now do not have
sufficient Current Expense funds to pay important items due such as the
Pastor’s Medical Insurance.
Therefore, we must ask that if you possibly can, please bring your
weekly offering up to date, or possibly even pay ahead. Any other
additional financial help you can give at this time will be very much
appreciated.
Also, we will once again be initiating the 144 program at the beginning
of July. The program is specifically to raise funds to pay our New York
Conference Apportionments. Your support of that program will also be
appreciated.
The 144 Program will run through Labor Day. There are envelopes in
the Narthex numbered 1 through 144. Choose your envelope(s). Fill
your envelope with a dollar amount that equals the number on the
envelope. Place your envelope with your name on it in the offering
plate. If you use another envelope make sure to label it “144 Program”
Your Current Expense Finance Committee,
Dave Barry, Chp.

Rowen Anthony Limmer was baptized on May 20, 2018 at Asbury. He is the son of Kristopher and Sara-Jayne Limmer, and the little brother of Jordyn, Natalie and Colton. They make their home in Plainville.
My dear, dear Asbury family, Thank you all for the prayers, support and cards you have given Dan and me. We really appreciated it! Words cannot express the awesome reception the women of Asbury did under the capable direction of my neighbor and friend, Pat Sallstrom.
Thank you! Thank you! Lovey Fasci
It's time again for a picture directory! Come September, we will have opportunities at Asbury for you and your family to have a picture taken for the directory. If you would rather take your own picture (or 'selfie') over the summer, we will be glad to have that included in the directory as well! When we did our last directory, we had some great pictures that families took over the summer while at gatherings, on vacation, or in a wonderful location that provided for a great backdrop. ***ONE NOTE: if you take a picture outside, make sure everyone has removed their sunglasses!*** Send your own pictures to [email protected].

With the onset of warm weather, to everyone who donates their returnable beverage containers to the church, be aware that if you store returnables in your garage, or outside, it is important to rinse and drain containers (especially cans). The residue left in containers is a magnetic attraction for our little friends ANTS, and it makes for a real problem when brought into the church. Your attention to this will be much appreciated. Once again thank you to all who participate.

FROM THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE
The Education Committee is looking for church school teachers for the 2018 / 2019 school year. The committee provides curriculum and training. You will need to teach the last three or four Sundays. The committee is flexible and supportive.
The first Sunday of every month the children participate in a music program with Donna Pehmoeller so no teachers are required then.
The committee is also in need of substitute teachers for the first three months in 2019: January, February and March.
Anyone who is interested in working with children and youth must complete Safe Sanctuaries training. Training is held at Asbury at various times throughout the year.
If you can help with the future of our church, please contact Heidi Borkowski at 860-280-7441.
SAVE THE DATE!
Welcome back to church school

From left, Plainville Community Schools Volunteer of the Year Award winners Dave Barry and Barbara Barry and Mentor of the Year Award Charles Floyd.
Excerpts Taken from The Record Journal May 24, 2018
Plainville Community Schools’ annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner and Awards Program was held May 10 at Plainville High School.
The Mentor of the Year Award recipient was Charles Floyd.
Floyd has been a mentor in the school district for eight years, currently mentoring sixth grader Carlos Rodriguez at the Middle School of Plainville. Floyd was nominated by a group of MSP staff members.
Dave and Barbara Barry, with 47 years of combined volunteer service to Plainville schools, were the recipients of the Volunteer of the Year Award.
Dave Barry joined the mentor program as an employee at General Electric 27 years ago and has mentored at Wheeler School and MSP. Currently, he serves as a mentor at PHS. He is also a volunteer Reading Partner at Linden Street School, along with his wife, who has served as a Reading Partner at Linden for 20 years.
Plainville High School staff members Jeri Lynn Turkowitz and Lynn Davis, who nominated the Barrys, shared a poem about their years of service during the award presentation.
Superintendent Maureen Brummett noted, “Our volunteer programs in Plainville under the leadership of Sue Bradley allow us to support our students in many ways. Charles Floyd and Dave and Barbara Barry are so deserving of this recognition for all they have done to enrich the lives of so many of our students. Plainville Community Schools is immensely grateful for their volunteerism.”

Ethan, a student at Mountain View Elementary School, reads a speech
about his mentor, Max Corvo, at the Caring About People Mentor Recognition Luncheon. Corvo was named Mentor of the Year
Excerpts Taken From The Bristol Press Published on Thursday, 7 June 2018 Written by SUSAN CORICA
BRISTOL - The school district’s mentor program has about 120 adults who volunteer to help students but there are at least another 50 students who are in need of mentors, according to Sarah Mitchell, program coordinator.
Mitchell hosted the annual Caring About People Mentor Recognition Luncheon Thursday at Nuchie’s. Max Corvo was named Mentor of the Year for his work with a student at Mountain View Elementary School and Michael Audette received the Fred Soliani Award for mentoring a student at West Bristol K-8 School.
Corvo’s mentee, Ethan, who is a student at Mountain View, read a speech about his mentor.
“He talks to me when I’m upset, he plays games with me and he is very fun,” Ethan said. “He comes once a week and spends an hour with me. He gives presents and not a lot of mentors do that. He gives me cards so I can write to him in the summer. He is the best mentor ever. He is very nice and friendly, so I just want to say thank you.”
Corvo said mentoring is easy because he enjoys spending time with Ethan so much.
“There’s not a day when I leave Mountain View that I’m not smiling and feeling better,” he said. “So as much of a gift as I’m grateful to be able to give to Ethan, the gift of friendship, the gift of a little bit of time, I receive the gift many times over.”
“We need more mentors,” Superintendent Susan Moreau said. “Tell someone and then they’ll tell someone and then they’ll tell someone. Mentors please share how wonderful you feel when you mentor your child, because we need probably about 400. It is an hour a week or less, depending on the age of the child, and we have more and more children that need that support.”
For more information about the school mentor program, call Sarah Mitchell at 860-584-7043.
