7th Annual Treasure Sale Fundraiser Saturday, September 9th In May we had a short meeting regarding this year’s Treasure sale. It was agreed to run it much like last year. We will begin taking in treasures the third week of July 16th, so if you could hold items till then it would be appreciated. Then they can be neatly stacked in the Outreach room and the youth room next door. On Wednesday, August 2nd from Noon to 3pm and Thursday, August 3rd from 6-9pm will begin sorting and pricing. Questions please see the co-chairs, Betsy Arthur, Nancy Ott, Bonnie Boudreault

Based on past lack of sales on the following items these are NOT being collected for sale:

Dirty items, car seats, VHS tapes, Books (Children’s books OK), large furniture items (couches, large cabinet units (smaller end tables, lamps, etc are OK), computers, keyboards, monitors, old out dated appliances, TV’s (only flat screen OK), exercise machines. As much as we love to recycle many of these items are not selling and are ending up being taken to recycling spots in the area by a volunteer.

Rally Sunday and Church Picnic Sunday, September 17th

Come join us for the official start of Sunday School for the Fall. There will be a church picnic following Worship too! So, save the date!

Angels live in cloud houses made by God and his Son, who's a very good carpenter. Jared, age 8 My angel is my Grandma who died last year. She got a big head-start on helping me while she was still down here on earth. Ashley, age 9 Some of the angels are in charge of helping heal sick animals and pets. And if they don't make the animals get better, they help the child get over it. Vicki, age 8 What I don't get about angels is why, when someone is in love, they shoot arrows at them. Sarah, age 7

The above quotes were some sent to me by a friend, illustrating some of the humorous things children believe.

HOWEVER, before we laugh too hard, there are lots of biblical-sounding things we Christians say that are---how shall I put it?---not either Biblical or true or a good idea. If you think on them for long, some don’t even make sense.

And some of them are things we WISH the Bible said….but it doesn’t. Or we give it a different meaning, taking it completely out of context.

Many of these well-meaning statements cause me to cringe when they are said to someone struggling, or mourning, or distressed.

This summer, starting on July 23, I will be preaching a sermon series entitled “Things We Wish the Bible Said.” I could subtitle it: “If I was God, I would have said this….Or would I?”

Any sentence starting, “If I was God….” never ends well. Just saying.

If you think of any sayings you’d like me to explore, let me know. Let’s make this a summer when we really dig in to what God actually said in the Bible, and not what we wish or hope was there.

God bless you all,

Pastor Cheryl

FOOD PANTRY SUNDAYS: July 2nd & August 6th

Weinberg Food Pantry & New Beginnings Food Pantry @ Amherst Baptist Church

We will be supporting the Weinberg and New Beginnings Food Pantries. Since we will be supporting two food pantries, we will be needing a lot of donations.

We are into Summer weather and those who use the food pantry are looking for personal care items. Just think of things you like to use. Toothpaste, shampoo, hair conditioner, deodorant, soap, and dental floss.

It's time for iced tea and most of the clients look for teabags. Clothes get dirtier in Summer and there is need for detergent for clothes and fabric softener.

Lots of paper towels, Kleenex, and toilet paper are needed too.

All of your donations are gratefully accepted. We wish you could see how happy people are when the make their choices.

And you make this happen! God Bless.

Prayer and Healing Service:

Our next Prayer and Healing Service is on Tuesday July 11th starting at 7pm (as July 4th is a National Holiday). We can say that our service is a moving experience for those that attend and those that lead it. Our last service we had 4 people come that do not come to our church - but needed a spiritual prayer & healing that night. This service is a time for you to be still and feel God's presence. This service, which takes place on the first Tuesday of the month, holds a space and time for you to connect with God about what is ailing you physically, emotionally and/or spiritually. Through scripture, music, quiet prayer, community prayer, anointing and communion; the service seeks to aid you as you walk with God down the path toward healing. If you know someone that would benefit from this service, please pass the information on to them. You don't need to be a member or attend our church. This is an open invitation to anyone that would like to connect with God in prayer and healing!

Tracy Hagler and Jessica Glaser

Happy summer to all! What great weather we have been enjoying - who needs Florida!

First some thank you's - Thank you to all who attended our Pizza Party at Beechwood Nursing Home -Holzman House. We had a nice time and the residents loved the pizza and the singing. Thanks to Laurie Syms who got the words - boy did that help!! - for some old songs that the residents knew. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable evening. Please consider getting your group together and taking a month. We have a super good group of residents and they do look forward to our visits.

Recently a few of us had the privilege of cooking and serving a community dinner for The First United Methodist Church of Niagara Falls. This is a ministry of Pendleton UMC and they do a wonderful job of helping this church.

Thank you to everyone who went to First UMC to make and serve dinner for needy families in that area. A special thank you goes to Pat Hair who met the challenge of cooking pasta for 88 people without difficulty. As we witnessed the smiles on the faces of the neighborhood people who come weekly for their spiritual and physical "feeding" we felt blessed. God is good! We are hoping to do a few dinners a year if possible. Great way to spread God's Love!!

In July we will be having a cook-out at Holzman House. All are welcome to attend. Date will be given out as soon as it is set. We grill hot dogs and bring some homemade dishes for the residents to enjoy.

During August and September, Outreach will be concentrating on the Garage Sale. This is a lot of work but also a lot of fun. We will start to collect items in Mid-July and mark during August. Treasure Sale date has been set for Saturday, September 9, 2017. This is a week earlier to help get prepared for Rally Day's schedule. This is the church's largest fund raiser and we do need the funds! Please clean out those basements and attics and let's get some great items to sell! There will be a sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall in August for help needed the day of the event. We need lots of hands!!

Have a super summer!

God Bless!

Sunday School News

Another Sunday School year has come and gone. WOW! Thank you to all the parents who faithfully brought their children to church. Every week there was a bible-based lesson infused with conversations, crafts, singing, stories and lots of fun. Thank you to all our teachers for making this year special for the children of Asbury.

During the summer months, there will be an opportunity for the children to worship with their family. Take advantage of this time to teach your children about worship. Point out the sections of worship using the bulletin as a guide. Have them stand, sit and listen, pray and sing with the congregation. There will be a children's moment, then the youngest of the children can go to the playroom.

There will be some redecorating done to the Cherub room this summer. The kids will be very excited to see the new changes! Rally day will be Sunday, September 17th! Put it on your calendar. You won't' want to miss this Church-wide event!

Fall Sunday School Supply Need: If you would kindly donate some silver duct tape! There will be a box in the Fellowship Hall for your donations of silver duct tape for this Falls Sunday School theme of “The Armor of God." Thank you for helping us!

C.I.A – Christians In Action Children/Youth

Hello fellow C.I.A members - :) We have been having so much fun being in service to others. Just to give you a recap on what we have done since we started in October of 2016: * October 2016 we made No Sew blankets for the Child Advocacy Center * November 2016 we colored placemats for the Kairos Prison Ministry * December 2016 we made crosses and wreaths for the residents of Saint Catherine's Laboure * February 2017 we made snowmen lights for our resident friends at Holzman House * March 2017 we made 50 emergency kits for the Buffalo City Mission * May 2017 we made pictures for the Mother's Day/Special Woman's Day for the women in

Prison for Pastor Cheryl to take with her. * Our June Bon-Fire got rained out and we will reschedule for another time. Everything that we have done truly shows Gods love for us - so we in turn can show God's love to others. But we aren't done yet! We are still collecting items for the "Christmas in July" collection for the Red Bird Mission and will through August. We are looking for the following items: * Campbell's UPC Labels for Education, * For kids: construction paper, board games, calculators: TXI, TXI 30A, Clorox wipes, tissues

(full size box), markers, colored pencils, binders, dictionary (children's), loose-leaf college rule

paper * For families: Shampoo, Soap, Deodorant, Baby shampoo, Nutrition Drinks (like Ensure),

Toothbrushes At this point we will be taking a small break during the summer and we will resume our activities in October. Thank you to all those that have donated items, that have been hands to help make the items, that have put together dinner for the group. We are truly blessed to have each and every one of you! Blessings, Tracy Hagler and Karen Kirwan

Fundraising Don't forget those Dash's receipts when you are food shopping. There is a box on the counter in the Fellowship Hall, for receipts of any amount. Ask your friends and neighbors to save the receipts for you. We almost have enough receipts to turn in for a proceed check. Thanks for your help with this fund raiser.

Bottle/Can Returns

You can take your bottles and cans directly to DEPOSIT DEPOT at 660 N. French Road near Sweet Home Rd. We will get 6 cents a can/bottle and just tell them to put it towards the Asbury UMC account. But you can still bring your cans and bottles directly to church and leave them in the kitchen in the box next to the fridge! The last check we received in May was for $149.76!! It all adds up!! $$$ Thank you! Laurie Syms

Do you shop at Tops for groceries or gas? Asbury UMC has $10, $20, $50, & $100 Tops gift cards available for purchase. For every $100 (You receive full face value of the card) in Gift Cards you buy, Asbury UMC earns $5.00 from Tops!! That’s free money to help serve the Lord!

Asbury’s Servant Leaders

for 2017

Please see the list to the right. These are the people to go to if you have questions.

NOMINATIONS NEWS This August, (Wed. Aug. 9th, 6:30pm meeting) the Nomination Team will begin its search for talented people to fill the various positions that help keep Asbury running smoothly and following God’s will for this church family.

Where is God calling YOU to help Asbury be the best church it can be?

Each year, we nominate three people to the Board of Trustees, for a term of 3 years. The Trustees handle the personal and real property of the church. Questions? The Chairperson of Trustees is Jeff Hair.

We also nominate two people to the Staff/Pastor/Parish Relations Committee (the SPPRC), for a term of 3 years. These two must be members of the church and help encourage and guide the pastor and staff in their duties. Questions? See Vergie Oettinger, the chairperson of SPPRC.

We also will nominate lay leader(s) for the upcoming year, the church council chairperson, committee on finance members and chairperson, lay member to annual conference, the chairperson of SPPRC, recording secretary of church council…whew, we have some work to do!

You can help us, by telling us where your gifts can be used! The members of the nominations team are Pastor Cheryl, Nancy Moore, Tracy Hagler, Karen Kirwan, and our lay leaders (Chris Hagler, Bill Schiferle and John Havrilla). Got questions about any position? Willing to answer God’s call? Let any of us know!!

Over the next weeks, we will be sharing more information about the available positions during announcements. Please listen and pray about where you can serve. God bless!!

FINANCIAL NEWSLETTER ARTICLE Probably every one of us has bought something for the church for some reason. Like a stapler, an on-site masseuse, or maybe a new Mercedes for the pastor.

If we buy something and donate that thing to the church, the church doesn’t have to record it unless you want to make it a memorial to some who has passed away or want to honor someone who is still hanging in there.

If we buy something and want to be reimbursed, the church does have to record it and we have a form to fill out. It might be a pain in the neck to fill it out, but it’s so easy that even a Christian can do it.

The form is called the “Payment Request” form and we can get one from any of the committee chair people or from our treasurer, Bonnie. The form is to be filled out before making the purchase so that we know Bonnie is not allowed to reimburse us without receiving a form signed by a committee chair, and receipt(s). If we purchase something without the form and receipt, then we are putting the chairperson and Bonnie in the awkward position of possibly not being able to reimburse us.

We are sure that anyone who purchases something for the church is honestly doing what they feel is right, but sometimes we don’t all agree on what is needed for the church. The finance committee feels that the fellowship hall should be wallpapered with pictures of money so that people will be subliminally want to give more money. You know, like how restaurants blow steak-air outside to get people hungry. Or veggie-burger odors for vegetarians. But for some odd reason, almost everyone else isn’t so sure that this is a good idea.

Asbury’s finances are tighter than the skin on the top of Merrill’s head, so every chairperson must stay within their budget. It isn’t fair for somebody to spend part of that budget on something that the chairperson wasn’t planning on.

So please complete a “Purchase Request” form before you make any purchase for the church that you will want to be reimbursed for. Hey man, it’s the establishment that’s making us do this, not Bonnie. She does get audited which this form will give explanation where the money goes and what budget account it is being taken from.

Also, we are tax exempt, so there are some stores already set up with our exemption. If you are OK’s to purchase for the church by a chairperson, please get tax exempt form first. Thank you.

Some people buy items and don’t want to be reimbursed. They can give the receipt to the finance secretary and she can give a non-monetary credit on your offering statement for year-end tax purposes.

In God We Trust! The Finance Committee

(This message was produced by the committee to keep Bonnie sane and she approves of this message)

Ink Recycle Thank you to all the people who bring in their empty ink cartridges! I am a big recycler!!

To actually get certificates to spend at Office Depot from the returned ink cartridges, we must make purchases of at least $10 every month. I try to make purchases using Asbury’s membership ID to gain credit on the account to receive these cash certificates however, I don’t need to make purchases every month even for office supply items. If you know you will be purchasing something at Office Depot please take a membership card and have them scan it in to give Asbury credit for the purchase. I have copies of the membership card made in the office. For every 10 ink cartridges that I return every month, the church gets $20 to spend in the store. But the catch is a $10 purchase each month, needs to be made. In the past, I have earned enough certificates to buy a whole box of copy paper, 11X17 paper, envelopes, file folders, and more, I once had a $100 certificate (their rules were a bit different then). If you know you need something at Office Depot could you please use the church’s membership card to help? Thank you. Bonnie Secretary

Trustee Tidbits

Thanks to all for helping with the spring cleanup and preparing our grounds and gardens! A special thank you to Doug DuBois for the use of his 33 ton log splitter! Bill Schiferle for his "O" Turn mower with trailer and Sue Korosecz for helping us amateurs recognize weeds from florets! We greatly appreciate the help and couldn't have done it without the help of all who volunteered.

The Entranceway blacktop

As many of you know, recently an unfortunate car fire burnt our blacktop. Thankfully the owner of the car was unscathed. Their insurance and our insurance are working on resolving the claims so we can move forward with repairs.

Warmer weather arrives!

And with it comes air conditioning to keep our church comfortable. While our heating and cooling system is state of art sometimes keeping all us comfortable is hard to do. Please bring a sweater or jacket that best suits you, should you feel outside the comfort zone afforded by our system.

Future projects to be announced.

Moving our shed from it's current location to it's new and hopefully final resting place. Dates and sign up sheets coming soon.

Church signage inside to help our new members and visitors navigate more easily.

Sunday school redecorating! It's going to be Supercalifragilisticexpialidociouss!

God Bless, Jeff Hair-Trustee Chairperson
