FROM THE PASTOR
“Therefore your servant found it in his heart to pray this prayer to you.”
-2 Samuel 7:27
Welcome to 2012!
We start the New Year on a Sunday. And what a way to begin a new year – worshiping God and renewing our commitment to
be in service to God and one another.
I share this prayer in hopes that it might become a guide for you and help you navigate the ups and downs this year will
surely bring.
A Prayer for the New Year
Father, as we begin the cycle of years again,
Let each day belong to you.
Let us look forward and not backward.
May grace see us through.
Grant peace to our hearts,
And courage your will to do.
Give us gentle and kind spirits.
May grace see us through.
In these days of terror and fear,
We stand on Your Word that is True.
Your strength our comfort s-ll.
Your grace sure to see us through. Amen.
-Lee McGlone
As we begin this New Year, I invite you to make a commitment to start each day with God. A.end worship regularly. Let
everything you say and do start with God. God desires to give us –as a church, and as individuals a fresh start. Let us trust
him to bless us in all that we undertake in his name.

Oh, what a fun time the Seniors had at their Decem-ber meeting featuring Stacey Spear, our handbell di-rector. She began the program playing a beautiful Christmas carol using many of the handbells. She was accompanied by Kristen Schussler, our music di-rector, on the piano. Then she directed all the Seniors as we formed a handbell choir and played Jingle Bells using the special color coded sheet mu-sic she provided. We learned a lot about handbells and we thank Stacey so much for sharing her time and talent with us. Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 12. This will be our "BINGO MEETING". Bring your "White El-ephants" wrapped or not and come for the fun. Bring a bag lunch, and beverages and dessert will be fur-nished.
THANK YOU!
Your birthday and get well cards have been a pure delight. It is so great to have such a super church family.
Much love and thanks, Claranell Newlon
Many thanks to the Meal Makers for remembering me in such kind and thoughtful ways, by bringing me wonderful meals and treasured visits.

A New Years Greeting from The Choir Director
Hello to everyone at CHUMC!
The Chancel Choir has had quite a fall season this year, which concluded in December with a
successful Cantata. And after we all take a sigh of relief, I have to say that I'm really looking
forward to kicking off the spring 2012 season. The choir will be doing a mix of traditional and
modern anthems throughout the spring, similar in style to the music we sung last fall. For the
Maundy Thursday service, we'll be singing with the choirs from several area churches, and
the Easter cantata will be a joyous celebration that I'm truly excited for the choir to share with
this church family this Easter. There truly is so much for us to look forward to over the next few
months!
I would also like to personally thank everyone at CHUMC for making me so welcome over the past several
months. Settling in with a new music director is an adjustment for everyone, and I appreciate your patience as
I've learned "how CHUMC does things", and your valuable feedback, questions, and comments. I also appreciate
your enthusiasm and open minds as we all work together to bring great music to the worship service. My philos-
ophy has always been to use the best music possible to enhance the worship experience, that will help the choir
and the congregation together grow as faithful Christians and as lovers of music, and that approach guides the
music that we do in the choir and in the worship service. As we look towards the months ahead, I'm excited for
us to continue to grow together as a choir and a church of Christ's disciples through the music that we sing, and
to worship the Lord with a very joyful noise! Happy New Year to you and your families!
-Kristen Schussler

WHY WE SING Hi everyone, I'd like to invite all of you to a class that began on November 6th and will continue throughout the year in the choir room. The class is called Why We Sing, and is open to every single member of the church whether you're a musician or not. We will have a different topic for each Sunday of the month, so even if you can't come every week, I encourage you to join us for a week that interests you and gain some in-sight into the music of the church- the history, the liturgy, and the reasons behind what we sing and play each Sunday. Why We Sing will continue throughout the year. 1st week: Hymn Study: We'll take a look at some of your favorite hymns and learn who wrote them and why, so that we'll have a deeper understanding of the music and the text as we sing the hymns together. Suggestions are welcome for hymns that you'd like to learn more about! 2nd week: Music Theory for the Layperson: Don't let the name of this class scare you. We'll be learning basic techniques for understanding the music in the hymnal as a congregation member, so you can be more confident in lifting your voice and sing-ing every Sunday. No prior music experience required! 3rd week: Music in the Methodist Church: John and Charles Wesley understood the importance of music when they founded the Methodist Church, which is why our United Methodist Hymnal is one of the most commonly used hymnal across denomina-tions. We'll discuss the role they envisioned for music in the Methodist service and in the Christian life, as well as discuss the service music as it pairs with our liturgy. 4th week: Contemporary Christian Singing: There is a wide range of opinions about contemporary Christian music, but no one can deny that it's had an impact in our denomination, and in the universal Church. We'll take a look at the contemporary movement as it has developed over the years, and learn some of the most influential contemporary songs. 5th week: Grab-bag/Discussion: For the odd 5th week, we'll focus on a topic that is of interest to anyone in the class, in a dis-cussion format.

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR
I would like to take this time to thank all of you for a wonderful year. Your support and generosity have made
directing the bell choir most enjoyable. It was because of the Brunswick Stew sales that the bell choir was able
to order new music and register for a Bell Festival – THANK YOU!
As we enter the New Year, we have a lot to look forward to. The Joy Ringers are preparing for a bell festival that
will be held in Hampton Roads on April 27 and 28. They have to learn 6 new pieces of music and are already
well on their way. You will hear the songs we are learning during various services. When are those services?
I’m glad you asked! They are:
