From The Pastor

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever!

Let the people say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”

- Psalm 118:1 – 2

Do you realize that Holy Week this year begins on April 1st

? Of course, that date is also considered as April Fool’s

Day.

Palm Sunday celebra&on – the start of Holy Week, takes on a new dimension this year. It comes on the date – April

1, a date that we associate with elements of silliness. What a challenge for those of us who have to share the gospel

message of the Triumphal Entry of Jesus riding into Jerusalem with April Fool’s Day!

But the fact that we begin this all important week on April 1, makes it even more compelling for us as Chris&ans to

share the real reason for the celebra&on of Easter. Easter is indeed about the miraculous resurrec&on of Jesus

Christ. As a result, it marks a new beginning not just in the lives of Chris&ans, but in the world as well.

New beginnings are about change – change in the way we experience the seasons; in the way we worship; in the way

we live our lives. God’s Holy Spirit living within us has the power to change us. That is what is promised to us

through the death and resurrec&on of Jesus. That is what we believe. That is the promise of our faith.

Come worship with us this Easter Sunday as we celebrate the good news that is Easter. Visit our website,

Bea Tweedie would like to sincerely thank her church family and the

meal makers for all of the cards, phone calls, visits, and meals.

I want to thank members of Chamberlayne Heights church for the ex-

pressions of friendship that I received during my months of treatment for cancer. The many cards and phone calls were a great help in the heal-

ing process. - Martha Kersey

We did it! We successfully provided a warm room and delicious food for our Family Focus guests who are enrolled in the CARITAS Program. Nine parents with a total of 14 children were sheltered in our Barton Heights Hall from Saturday, February 25 until Saturday, March 3.

Volunteers prepared deluxe evening meals, packed lunches, did many loads of laundry, drove guests for showers at the “Y”, visited and enter-tained our guests. Some of you even volunteered for overnight duty and

were on hand by 4:30 am to start a hot breakfast for our guests!

Your willingness to provide fruit for lunches and breakfast foods, as well as, your cash contributions made it possible to be in service to these

homeless families for an entire week.

Thank You Many Times Over! The Outreach/Missions Committee

We sincerely appreciated the concern, calls, and cards we received dur-

ing Flora’s illness. It is truly a caring congregation. Thanks, - Flora and Clyde Bellamy

VIRGINIA STATE EMPLOYEES HAVE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT PRISON CHAPLAINCY

Chaplain Service Prison Ministry of Virginia, Inc. is the official agency that provides Chaplains to Virginia’s state prisons and juvenile correctional centers. The Chaplains serve as prison pastors and religious program coordinators in 31 state adult prisons and at three state juvenile correctional centers. The chaplains con-duct worship services, teach, counsel, and coordinate the many volunteers who assist in ministering to the male, female and youthful offenders incarcerated in the state prison system. The chaplains are supported by denominations, churches, foundations, and individuals, as well as by some of the profits from the Department of Corrections’ Commissary Fund. Chaplain Service is a registered charity with the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC). The CVC Code for Chaplain Service is 3002. This pre-sents a unique opportunity for state employees from all of the various state agencies to support prison minis-try and to help change lives and ensure safer communities. Chaplains are essential to the Commonwealth of Virginia in that they ensure equal access to religious programming and services as required by the First Amendment and the federal RLUIPA (Religious Land Usage and Institutionalized Persons Act) law.

If you’ve ever wanted to know more about Stacey Spear and the Joy Ringers, Chamberlayne

Height’s Bell Choir, then this is a must read article! We are thankful that Stacey could

participate, and share a little about herself and how Joy Ringers has impacted her life, the

church, and the community.

How long have you been with Joy Ringers?

Since September of 2009 and loving every minute of it!

What brought you to Chamberlayne Heights?

The choir director that was at Chamberlayne, before Kristen, called and said 'I've got a great

opportunity for you' the rest is history.

What is your favorite part about leading the Joy Ringers?

Working very hard on a difficult piece and having it come together to produce beautiful music.

What do you think people gain from being a part of the Joy Ringers?

People gain a couple of things. One of those things is a sense of complete teamwork. Each member of the choir has their particular bell

that needs to play at a very specific time. Alone, it doesn't sound great, but as part of the

choir, it sounds beautiful. Secondly, the member feel a sense of accomplishment. We

choose difficult pieces so that we can challenge our abilities. It feels so great when we

conquer a difficult piece. Every member of the choir knows how proud I am of them and

how much I believe in their abilities.

What do you look forward to this year with the Joy Ringers?

This year the Joy Ringers are participating in a bell festival at the Hampton Coliseum on April

27 and 28. There will be a concert on the 28 at 4:30. The Joy Ringers have had to learn 6

new pieces of music that are a high level of difficulty. We are all looking forward to the

Festival!! How do you think Joy Ringers impacts the community?

The Joy Ringers plays a diverse set of music that is liked by all different age groups. When people in the community hear we are playing

they like to come and listen, and we welcome that! The choir is open to anyone in the community who would like to join.

How can one join Joy Ringers? All a person needs to do is call me at 804.399.7429 and say "I would like to give the bells a try". Folks can also find a link to me on the

church's website.

Please help Chamberlayne Heights put together UMCOR kits! If you would like to donate items you can drop them off at the church office

Our previous bazaars, after expenses, brought in around $10,000! This could provide a “real boost” to our church finances. BAZAAR EXTRAORDINAIRE III is being planned for FRIDAY and SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19TH and 20TH. Please mark your calendars. Joan Williams and Helen Wood will be actively seeking ven-dors for our bazaar. Please let them know if you would like to be a vendor. If you know any crafters, be sure to let them know about our bazaar. We will keep you updated as future plans are finalized. around the church, and on ministries that we feel should be recognized within the community.

In order to run this article, we will need your help every month. Let us know if there is a person or ministry that

you would like to highlight for the next month.

Please contact the church office, if you would like to recognize a ministry or someone, with a small paragraph explaining about the individual/ministry and why they

have impacted your life. If possible, include a picture with your paragraph.

SENIOR LUNCHEON

The regular meeting of the Seniors group was held on March 8, 2012. The meal was as usual bountiful and delicious. The program was presented by Babs Jackson, President/CEO of HHH, Hospital Hospitality House located in Richmond on 612 East Marshall Street. Their mission is to provide lodging in a safe, caring environment where patients and families find respite and support during a medical crisis. The facility has hosted people from all of the states plus 31 foreign countries. More information may be found on their web site

www.hhhrichmond.org or by calling 828-6901.

Our April meeting will feature a very unusual program. It will be a musical presentation called “Name That Tune.” Adolph (Dolph) Moller, accordionist, will challenge our brains with Mitch Miller “Sing Along” tunes and invite us to compete in being the first to recog‐nize the tune. Dolph also includes jokes and stories in this lively program.

Dolph’s presentation grew out of a chapter meeting game with the Senior Friends Group at

Chippenham Hospital in 2001. Since that time, he has presented it over 100 times to groups

all over the Richmond area. So invite a friend to come and join us, Thursday, April 12 at

noon as we have fun and fellowship together with “Name That Tune.”

CARITAS REFLECTIONS 2012

As cribs and toys were retired to the nursery, supply inventories completed, guest cots and belongings loaded onto the big transport truck and our guests pulled away in the big Winn bus, our week of providing shelter for 9 homeless families was completed successfully.

A host of volunteers (church members, friends, Boy Scout Troop #500, etc.)_ signed the volunteer log, clocking in an estimated 427 hours on-site for the week of February 25 through March 3. Many other undocumented hours included those spent in planning for the week, shopping for supplies, preparing and serving meals, escorting in family pets to share, driving guests to the “Y” for showers, and doing numerous loads of laundry. Other folks who contribut-ed financially helped make the experience a reality.

Throughout the week when we had the privilege of hosting these families, those who were on hand to get to know the guests will forever be rewarded by reflecting on personal encounters made during the week with the parents and their children.

We all know the acronym for CARITAS. Another acronym might be used to personalize this ministry for us at CHUMC:
