JULY 2012
FROM THE PASTOR
“…be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you can figure out what God’s will is – what is good and
pleasing and mature.”
-Romans 12: 2 (CEB)
Dr. Leonard Sweet (one of my professors in Seminary), said recently in a sermon en!tled, “Celebrate the Small Stuff,”
these words:
Every book on change says the same thing. Change has changed. Change is no longer incremental.
Change is exponenal.
Here is what no one will tell you: Change is not just incremental, or exponenal. Change is infinitesimal.
(“Celebrate the Small Stuff, Leonard Sweet, Chris!an Globe Networks, Inc., 2012,0-00-1415)
The 230th
Session of The Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church was held on June 22-24, 2012.
It was held at the Civic Center in Roanoke, VA. This was the last conference that our bishop – Charlene Kammerer
presided over. She is re!ring, and will be taking on new responsibili!es in the coming months. I’m sure you want
join me in wishing God’s blessings as she makes this transi!on.
Henry Emerson Fosdick says, “Chrisans are supposed not merely to endure change, nor even to profit by it, but to
cause it.” Someone else said, “Change is here to stay.”
Change is certainly ahead for the conference as we prepare to welcome a new Bishop, and new leadership. Please
be in prayer for whoever will be our new bishop. As our community – indeed our world changes around us, so too,
must the church change if we are to remain relevant in our service to our parish. The Apostle Paul’s words to us
state clearly that we should be “…transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you can figure out what God’s
will is – what is good and pleasing and mature.” (Rom 12:2)
As I begin another year of service with you, I share with you some changes in our worship pa?ern in the coming
months. For the months that have five Sundays, on the 5th
Sunday, we will only have one worship service at 10am.
Sunday school will then be at 9am. I want to stress this only affects those months with five Sundays. We will
con!nue to have two worship services on all the other Sundays at the regular
worship !mes. Only during those months with five Sundays, we will then
have one worship service at 10am. Our first 10am worship service will be on
July 29th
.
I am looking forward to another year of fruiDul service here at CHUMC. I
invite you to join me in making it a year of faithful worship, and effec!ve,
caring outreach to our community.
Blessings,

Our family would like to express our deepest appreciation for all the
prayers, cards, and acts of love we received during our loss. We want to especially thank all who gave of their time and delicious food that was
provided for the reception following the funeral. Gratefully,
Diane, Courtney, and Lauren Guthrie
I want to thank everyone for their beautiful birthday cards and greetings. Your love and
concern mean so much to me. Mary McFarland
I wish to thank my church family for the kind
gestures you made on my behalf in celebration of my 98th Birthday. Most of all to the Meal Makers and Care Committee, thank you for your ministry
and dedication that you give to our church family. The meals are delicious and especially your visits they mean so very much to me.
-Lucille Stone
I have learned a lot from working with this population which we supposedly serve. My life is richer for it. I have been blessed by being
allowed to do this work. Even so, it is a difficult journey and often a very lonely journey. On the surface, we have made progress in accepting
those who are “different.” On behalf of the people with whom I work, thank you for being true “doers of the word.”
Even greater than my appreciation of your hosting the social events for ARC is my appreciation of the Sunday School class which has no
connections to ARC. That began because Gloria asked me to help her because her health problems were increasing. It has grown from being
just Chris Brooke and Mary Rhyne to 25 of my “followers” some Sundays. They are hungry for this experience.
In grateful appreciation, Jane Rhyne
I really appreciate the delicious meals delivered by Meal
Makers. Thank you for thinking of me, and being servants of the Lord.
Bea Tweedie
Dear Fellow Congregation Members, Please forgive my tardi attention to the one responsibility I can meet in some support of our church. My thoughts have strayed to respond to
secular calls, but, thankfully those that you, Pastor Livingstone and—I hope, Our Lord would approve.
Jean Turner tries to keep me up to date, and perhaps, on track. So continue your never—ending tasks of service
and remind me in July to awaken again. With love and admiration,
Phyllis Cartwright
WORDS TO DIGEST
“Today is not yesterday. We ourselves change.
How then, can our works and thoughts, if they
are always to be the fi%est, connue always
the same. Change, indeed, is painful, yet ever
needful; and if memory have its force and
worth, so also has hope.”

Seniors Connection
We hope you have noticed the new logo and name for our seniors’ group here at
CHUMC. We are now going to be called The Senior Connection.
When you see our new logo, what comes to mind…. energy, power, generator,
charge, connection, plug? That’s what we need as we move forward through all the
challenges our church is facing.
Our senior members are a vital part of our church family and we want to tap into
their depth of experience, create new energy, receive power in numbers, generate
new programs and projects to get us charged and invite others to “plug in” to the
experience.
We need everyone to have input into this process, so we are asking that you think
about how you can help, who you will invite to join us, what programs /projects you
want and what changes you would like to recommend. When we come together for
our first meeting, September 13th, we’ll spend some time talking together to see
how we can be better connected to God, to CHUMC, to each other, and to our
community. Plan to join us and get “plugged in” to The Senior Connection.

This month we have a special “Spotlight On” article to share with you! The
Pastor of Chamberlayne Heights, Livingstone Dore, graciously agreed to be interviewed, and give our readers a sneak peek into his life and times in the
ministry, as well as, with Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist. Thanks for
sharing with us, Pastor Dore, and for all you do at CHUMC!
What brought you to the ministry? What brought you to the ministry? What brought you to the ministry? What brought you to the ministry? After years of resisting, I finally gave in to what I knew and felt was my vocational calling to pastoral ministry. I knew that I wanted to be a minister at an early age. In fact that call was affirmed by another pastor visiting my home church. However, as a young adult, I wanted other things in life, so I quit being active in church. However, it wasn’t until I started college that I finally answered the call to a life’s profession of pastoral ministry.
How long have you been in the ministry? How long have you been in the ministry? How long have you been in the ministry? How long have you been in the ministry? I have been in ministry since 1993. I began serving my first church that year as a student pastor in a small rural church in Central Pennsylvania.
What do you like about serving the Chamberlayne Heights UMC Community? What do you like about serving the Chamberlayne Heights UMC Community? What do you like about serving the Chamberlayne Heights UMC Community? What do you like about serving the Chamberlayne Heights UMC Community? The people! My call to ministry is all about serving the members of the church as well as those in the community.
How does your ministry and CHUMC impact the surrounding community? How does your ministry and CHUMC impact the surrounding community? How does your ministry and CHUMC impact the surrounding community? How does your ministry and CHUMC impact the surrounding community? CHUMC has been serving the community for years through its various outreach ministries. Some of those ministries include tutoring, ARC, Meal-Makers, and Wednesday Night dinner events. We also open our church to host CARI-TAS annually.
What church events do you most look forward to throughout the year? What church events do you most look forward to throughout the year? What church events do you most look forward to throughout the year? What church events do you most look forward to throughout the year? I look forward to the Advent/Christmas season. This time of year is not only a joyous time, but it’s also a time that reminds me of where my faith began – with the birth of Jesus the Christ.
How can people get involved with CHUMC?How can people get involved with CHUMC?How can people get involved with CHUMC?How can people get involved with CHUMC? I encourage members to get involved in the church by committing to serve on committees. It’s one of the ways one can explore and use their gifts for service. Other areas of service: tutoring, singing in the choir or playing in the bell choir. When it comes to spiritual nurturing, I strongly suggest attending one of our Sunday school classes, as well as small group studies.

The Circuit Rider has started including it’s “Spotlight” article. We will be placing a “spotlight” on individuals around the church, and on ministries that we feel should
be recognized within the community.
In order to run this article, we will need your help every month. Let us know if there is a person or ministry that you would like to highlight for the next month.
Please contact the church office, if you would like to recognize a ministry or someone, with a small paragraph explaining about the individual/ministry and why they
have impacted your life. If possible, include a picture with your paragraph.

Harvey says here are some things for you to be thinking about:
BAKE SALE
Now is the time to make jellies, preserves and pickles for
the Bake Sale. These items sell well. When planning
your baking, think about making breads, pies and cakes now
and freezing them for sale at the Bazaar. These sell better than cookies
and bring more profit. The Bake Sale team needs your help.
SILENT AUCTION
Irene Couch and Martha Sherrod need items for gift baskets. Maybe you
have some “gently used” things lying around which would add just the
right touch to a basket. You can also donate a completed basket.
They are also seeking items to be offerred for the Silent Auction. Perhaps you can
donate a service, a gift certificate, a weekend get-a-way or a gift card.
BAZAAR SECURE ROOM
The first room on the right as you enter the Education Building has been
designated the “secure” room for Bazaar donations and will be kept locked..
If you don’t have access to a church key, you can give your item
