I want to return to portions of that article and remind you once again of the importance of this ministry to the church: Everyone of us, whether we are parents or not, struggle everyday as to how best to juggle the pressures of work and family life. These days most seem to arrange or rearrange their lives in ways that allow them just enough time to acknowledge certain milestones in the lives of their children—birthdays, playing first soccer game, baseball or basketball game, school play, etc. Taking the time to sit and help one’s child or children with homework is perhaps not high on the list of priorities; or maybe one is just not prepared to offer any such assistance. At the same time, those who volunteer as tutors and helpers, benefit holistically and spiritually. By our actions we live out the New Testament teachings: “Take the time and trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit. Bodily fitness has a limited value, but spiritual fitness is of unlimited value, for it holds promise both for this present life and for the life to come.” ( 1Timothy 4:8) Taking the time tutoring a child once a week for two hours, can mean more to the child and tutor in ways not expected. It offers the opportunity to get to know one another and thus allow the church to become a caring, and discipling community. It also allows the church the privilege to reach the churched as well as the un-churched. The tutoring ministry ended for the school year on April 26 th . I want to extend once again my sincere thanks to all the Tutors for their time, gifts, and abilities in helping to make this past season a success and a blessing. From The Pastor

“The biggest thing people want in church is relevance to their lives, and it’s up to the church to build that bridge between the life-changing power of Christ and people’s everyday lives.” -Ed Young About four years ago, I wrote my “FROM THE PASTOR” page on the Tutoring ministry here at CHUMC. I want to return to portions of that article and remind you once again of the importance of this ministry to the church: Everyone of us, whether we are parents or not, struggle everyday as to how best to juggle the pressures of work and family life. Taking the time to sit and help one’s child or children with homework is perhaps not high on the list of priorities; or maybe one is just not prepared to offer any such assistance. That is where I believe we come in as a church. Chamberlayne Heights Church is called to be in ministry to the community. And through our Tutoring Ministry, we make disciples for Jesus Christ. At the same time, those who volunteer as tutors and helpers, benefit holistically and spiritually. Thank you to all those who bought and helped make Easter Eggs this year!

Dear CHUMC friends, To wish all of you the best of health and prayerful that your Easter

Celebration indeed gave honor to our Savior, Jesus Christ. We, Que and I, are truly thankful to God that he is still blessing us with a reasonable amount of good health and that we are still in our (somewhat) right minds! So many here, where we live, are not quite as well as we are

(sadly). Sandra had all the family at her home for a beautiful gathering and brunch for Easter Sunday. I thank so many of our friends for keeping in touch with their cards and prayers for us. I really miss all of you still. It’s been 1 year as of the 6th of April since we moved. The food is still good and plentiful here. We will be glad to see any of you who can come to see us

at any time. I love you all. Sincerely,

Imogene & Quincy Watson

Dear CHUMC Family, Thank you for keeping Ken in your prayers during his recent

Surgery. Thank you for your cards, acts of kindness, and for just being there for us.

Love, Ken and Myrtle Ruth Stockman

Our Friends Class really enjoys making and sending monthly cards and would like to send some to your loved ones! A special thanks to Jane Rhyne, her helpers, and our Care Committee

Dear Sisters and Brothers, Today I became a Malawi Registered Nurse. It has been a stress to many people around me until I get this. It is an amazing story about the answer of our prayers. I was told Malawi License is required to teach here since we have arrived Malawi. As a retired nurse who has never administered IV injection during the entire nursing career it was a big challenge. The experience of a young nurse who had arrived earlier and gone through a month of practice here made me stressful. The schedule for my practice turned out very generous one and beyond of my imagination. It cannot be like this without God's intervention. I believe it is the answers to everybody’s prayers for me and thank you for your prayers. Practices were arranged at our Daeyang Luke Hospital which had lost the qualification as a training hospital awhile ago. When we have a new matron who came after me they gave unexpected credit to this hospital. My practice could be started earlier before she started work for us, but this good timing was His provision. It washed away many concerns regarding to the transportation in rainy season, consuming of time and physical energy, etc. If I had been assigned the other hospital which is located 30 minutes driving distance it was a big burden for me who don't drive here. The four week schedule with only 15 days practice made me survive physically. During the practice days I learned that I am supposed to retire from clinical practice. It was a good experience to learn about this country. Malaria and HIV are the diagnosis of most patients. Malaria is a real serious threat to everybody who lives here. Also it is a big relief from many conflicts which the system and culture caused to have the feeling of not being accepted as a partner, sometimes we have felt we are treated like enemy. Especially my husband has had rough time when he was working for cafeteria. It was a fight which God know his heart. Through difficult time God allow us to grow. We need to humble ourselves and to depend on God’s help when we work out frustration, anger, and helplessness and find the meaning of our mission here. God’s words are our resort and deliver us comfort and strength always. I am praying for His guidance and wisdom which I can behave appropriately to my present position as a missionary lecturer in Ma-lawi. I am looking for more specific knowledge and skills. Please continue prayers for our mission here. With thanks, Yea Sook Kim

How long have you been directing the Choir? How long have you been directing the Choir? How long have you been directing the Choir? How long have you been directing the Choir? I came to CHUMC in July of 2010, and I have been so welcomed by everyone in this wonderful church family.

What brought you to Chamberlayne Heights? What brought you to Chamberlayne Heights? What brought you to Chamberlayne Heights? What brought you to Chamberlayne Heights? I had played for my previous church for several years, and I was looking for growth and change. I learned that CHUMC was looking for someone enthusiastic who could help reinvigorate their music program, and I have enthusiasm to spare, so it seemed like a match made in heaven.

What is your favorite part about leading the Choir? What is your favorite part about leading the Choir? What is your favorite part about leading the Choir? What is your favorite part about leading the Choir? I love rehearsing with this group of individuals. Thanks to some great characters in the choir, we have a balance of fun and focus in rehearsals, so we get a lot done and laugh a whole lot while we're at it.

What do you think people gain from being a part of the Choir? What do you think people gain from being a part of the Choir? What do you think people gain from being a part of the Choir? What do you think people gain from being a part of the Choir? There is a wonderful sense of family with this choir, and it is so special to be a part of. By singing

together and worshiping together through the music we share with the congregation, we get to know each other and grow to-gether in ways we wouldn't otherwise. We also all gain a sense of confidence in ourselves, our abilities and our gifts through singing for the congregation.

What do you look forward to for this year and next year with the Choir? What do you look forward to for this year and next year with the Choir? What do you look forward to for this year and next year with the Choir? What do you look forward to for this year and next year with the Choir? This year is winding down for the choir, after they worked so hard on the Easter Cantata. We won't sing during church in the summer, but when we start up again in the fall, we'll start working on our Christmas Cantata right away, and that's going to be very exciting. I'm also looking forward to our BBQ Chicken fundraiser coming up in June!

How do you think the Choir impacts the community? How do you think the Choir impacts the community? How do you think the Choir impacts the community? How do you think the Choir impacts the community? We are able to sing only because our God blessed us with these musical talents. So before every service, the choir prays that as we lift our voices in song, our music is experienced by the congregation in a way that will praise and glorify Him.

I know we all have different memories of our previous bazaars - tired feet, exhaustion, back pain, fun, laugh-ter, good food, shopping sprees wonderful fellowship, etc. Plans are back on the drawing board for our third bazaar. Our previous bazaars, after expenses, brought in around $10,000! This could provide a “real boost” to our church finances. BAZAAR EXTRAORDINAIRE III is being planned for FRIDAY and SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19TH and 20TH. Please mark your calendars. Joan Williams and Helen Wood will be actively seeking vendors for our bazaar. Please let them know if you would like to be a vendor. If you know any crafters, be sure to let them know about our bazaar. We will keep you updated as future plans are finalized. Carolyn Pendleton and Phin Wood are serving as chairpersons for our bazaar. Let them know if you would like to help!

A TRANSPORTATION TEAM

is being created in an effort to provide transportation to medical appointments for

members of our congregation. Art Long has agreed to serve as the coordinator of this committee.

We are looking for volunteers who are willing to assist Art with this endeavor. As soon as we get a team together, we will let you know so that sched-uling can begin. This is an important ministry for our church, as some of our members are unable to

drive.

Please give Art a call on 746-9296 if you will be able to help.

The Circuit Rider has started including it’s “Spotlight” article. We will be placing a “spotlight” on individuals around the church, and on ministries that we feel should

be recognized within the community.

In order to run this article, we will need your help every month. Let us know if there is a person or ministry that you would like to highlight for the next month.

Please contact the church office, if you would like to recognize a ministry or someone, with a small paragraph explaining about the individual/ministry and why they

have impacted your life. If possible, include a picture with your paragraph.

We are available at [email protected] and 266-3551

SENIOR LUNCHEON

Our senior luncheon April 12, featured a very unusual program. Adolph (Dolph) Moller used his talents on the accordion to lead us down memory lane. Dolph played the first three notes of a tune and the first person to “Name That Tune” received a prize of a candy bar. Everyone enjoyed singing along and the competition was fierce. Dolph, a Lutheran and a resident of Midlothian, said that his appearance at our Methodist church here on the Northside, represented his entry into the Foreign Mission Field!

The next Senior meeting will be Thursday, May 10, beginning with a covered dish luncheon at noon in the Barton Heights Fellowship Hall. Our speaker will be Tom Morris. Tom worked as a reporter for the Times-Dispatch for 17 years and was a vice president of the Martin Agency in its public relations division for 17 years. His program, “Traveling Far to the West to Get to the Far East,” is a slide presentation of his cruise from Vancouver, British Columbia through Alaska, Vladivostok, Sapporo, Busan South Korea and into China.

Come and enjoy this interesting and educational program. And don’t forget to bring a friend!

CAN YOU HELP US HELP HHH?

As a follow-up project to our exciting March program presented by Babs Jackson, President/CEO of HHH, Hospital Hospitality House, the Seniors decided to collect items needed for the house and to visit the facility. Items needed include non-perishable food supplies, trial size cosmetic items and housekeeping supplies. Our goal is to collect the items during the months of May and June and deliver them to HHH in July when we tour the facility. The Seniors will have flyers available soon which will indicate the items needed and there will be a collection box in the Narthex beginning in May. Look for additional information in upcoming church bulletins and plan to join us when we take our donations to the center. The mission of HHH is to provide lodging in a safe, caring environment where patients and their families can find respite and support during a medical crisis. Since their beginning, the facility has hosted people from all of the states plus 31 foreign countries. More information about HHH can be found on their web site www.hhhrichmond.org.

Please plan to support this Seniors’ project to HELP HHH!

VIRGINIA STATE EMPLOYEES HAVE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT PRISON CHAPLAINCY

Chaplain Service Prison Ministry of Virginia, Inc. is the official agency that provides Chaplains to Virginia’s state prisons and juvenile correctional centers. The Chaplains serve as prison pastors and religious program coordinators in 31 state adult prisons and at three state juvenile correctional centers. The chaplains con-duct worship services, teach, counsel, and coordinate the many volunteers who assist in ministering to the male, female and youthful offenders incarcerated in the state prison system. The chaplains are supported by denominations, churches, foundations, and individuals, as well as by some of the profits from the Department of Corrections’ Commissary Fund. Chaplain Service is a registered charity with the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC). The CVC Code for Chaplain Service is 3002. This pre-sents a unique opportunity for state employees from all of the various state agencies to support prison minis-try and to help change lives and ensure safer communities. Chaplains are essential to the Commonwealth of Virginia in that they ensure equal access to religious programming and services as required by the First Amendment and the federal RLUIPA (Religious Land Usage and Institutionalized Persons Act) law.

What’s the Buzz Among our Missions Partners???

In response to our contributions in support of our identified mission partners, we have received comments regarding our gifts from our 2011 goal. Here are a few comments.

SoSA: “Thank you for your gift of $600 we received. Your donation will be used by the Society of St. Andrew to feed our hungry brothers and sisters by salvaging nutritious produce from fields and packing houses and delivering it to feeding agencies across the country that feed the hungry.”

LAMB’S Basket: “On behalf of Board of Directors of LAMB’ Basket I would like to thank you for your generous $1608.86 contribution to the food pantry. As you know, our organization is entirely volunteer, and we rely on the support of those who care about this worthwhile ministry.”

CHAPLAIN SERVICE PRISON MINISTRY OF VA, INC .: “Thank you and other Saints on the Missions Committee for the donation of $500 to Chaplain Service Prison Ministry of VA., Inc. …May god continue to bless you and your talents and abilities to serve so many ministries at CHUMC.”

ISH: “Interfaith Services of Henrico gratefully acknowledges the gift of $1000.00 in 2011.” In 2011 emergency financial assistance for over 206 Henrico families was made possible. Over 79% of the total of $4,147 collected in 2011 by this agency was used to provide emergency funds for rent, mortgage and utility payments to help keep families safe and together in their homes in an effort to prevent homelessness.

VIRGINIA UNITED METHODIST HOMES, INC: “On behalf of VUMH, Inc., thank you for your gift of $600.00 to the Samaritan Program. I am grateful you have chosen to contribute to the benevolent work of VUMH to support residents who can no longer meet the expense of their care.”

GREATER RICHMOND ARC : “GRARC thanks you for your gift of $500.00. Your support is significant – it impacts lives for good. Each dollar you have given has been used to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities…”

JUBILEE PROJECT. INC: “Jubilee Project, Inc. acknowledges and expresses appreciation and thanks to you for supporting our program’s cause with your kind donation. Jubilee Project is continuing its work for the economically disadvantaged through building asses of abilities and opportunities.”

STOP HUNGER NOW!: Your gift of $2570.55 is appreciated as we continue to end world hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-saving aid to the world’s most vulnerable and by creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources.

THANK YOU to each of you who assisted us with preparing a snack supper for our precious children during this year’s season of tutoring. We found that students prefer pizza, miniature corn dogs, hot dogs, pancakes, and macaroni and cheese as their main dishes for supper. No chips, grapes, cookies, or ice cream were ever left over when offered to the children! Your monetary gifts were used for the purchase of paper supplies and beverages.

You may want to consider ways in which you can be involved in this important community involvement ministry next school year. We’ll need tutors, substitute tutors, and snack supper chefs. Be on the look-out for volunteer opportunities with this program by the time “Back-to-School” items go on sale in the summer! We hope to run our tutoring ministry next season from October through April. Helen S. Wood: Tutoring Ministry Coordinator
