Volunteers are the lifeline of every non-profit organization, but especially ours because we are opento the public. We need help to greet visitors and escort them through the house and museum, which isnot only a very pleasant job but your time helping here is also very rewarding!

Our visitors enter through the front door and immediately admire our beautiful farm house, now anhistorical center. Greeters are necessary to guide and welcome them. As they proceed to the exhibit hall, they are very impressed and often say “I didn’t know that we have such a great museum in Greece!”

No one is expected to be here every Sunday; however, even once a month on Sunday afternoons from2 until 4:30 pm would be great! Some groups come by appointment on other days and people who have flexible availability find thiappealling. Special events that draw visitors and a great museum shop are also opportunities to welcome people. You can choose yohours to volunteer and training is quick and easy. We also have an annual Volunteers Luncheon which we all enjoy.

We truly value our volunteers and have initiated an annual Volunteer of the Year award in honor of Dorothea Schommer, whopassed away this year. Dorothea was the epitome of what a volunteer should be. She was cheerful and optimistic, had great skills inrelating history to adults and children, loved to meet people, was expert at creating exhibits and was always very willing to work asneeded in many aspects of our Greece Museum. The Volunteer of the Year award will be presented at our annual May meeting.

THE COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS TREE

Thank you to all who donated an ornament to the Community Christmas Tree. The tree was beautifully filled with a variety of interesting ornaments that truly depicted their donor. Vi White made a photo col-lage of her father’s Dewey -Stone area store – Cooper’s Store . It brought back memories. Pettis Pools donated a whimsical frog, all ready with his inflated ring for a swim in the pool. Charlotte-Genesee Light-house gave us a brass rendition of the lighthouse, which they sell in their gift shop. Mary Lou Hartley loaned us an ornament Vi painted a few years ago of the ―Howe House ‖ and it says, ―Greece, New York‖.Our gift shop sold them that year . Hilton Applefest was represented, as was Kiwanis (they gave us four!),Rotary, the library, Bethany Presbyterian, Aldersgate Methodist , and Messiah Lutheran churches . VanPutte Gardens gave us a seed packet from the original Van Putte Seed Company – which we prize! An-other ornament we cherish is a Christmas post card dated 1910 from Charlotte, loaned to us by RodneyLowe from his collection. Dr. Deborah Fox made a quilted round ornament with ―teeth‖ wearing braces.Avery PC donated a Christmas stocking with their business card inside.

The garden clubs were very creative. Shorewood Garden Club made a miniature version of the southside garden they planted and maintain for us. Lakeview Garden Club celebrates their 50 th Anniversary this year and submitted a miniature sprinkling can filled with red berries. Lakeshore Garden Club’s was aHallmark Keepsake ornament, ― Winter Wonders ‖, which shows a garden gate with a red cardinal on topand flower pots lying on the snow in front with sprigs of holly. hyme in the Garden Club has a hand

made felt ornament with an appliqué poinsettia.Flemming Point Residence gave two ornaments with their logo and name adorning them. The FairportMuseum’s ornament is a replica of their historic museum building. Animal Service League made a candy cane ornament with a cat crawling up on it. St. Joseph’s Villa’s angel ornament was made by the Com-munity Service Club . Betty Schmidt made a shiny red bell ornament, while George Werner made a feltreplica of a vintage steam engine – his hobby is model trains . Gloria Latragna submitted a photo framewith a picture of her home, known to history buffs as ―Dr. Carpenter’s House ‖, a lovely historic home onLatta Road. Alan Mueller’s Christmas stocking ornament has a photo of The Greece Historical Societyand Museum. Mary Hunt made a whimsical ―Mrs. Claus‖. Kathy Anderson gave a ―scholarly‖ ornamentfrom her group, the Retired Teacher’s Association. Dr. and Mrs. Scott Wiley loaned two ornaments: a redtrain – The Bushnell’s Express – which runs at Rotary’s Camp Haccamo and the Aldersgate MethodistChurch ornament.

Thank you one and all for contributing to the Community Christmas Tree. It made our tree memorablenot only for our Museum but also for the community. — -The Museum Curatorial Committee

HELP WANTED – RESEARCH

Help is needed in finding information from old newspaper accounts, marriage and death records, landtransactions, and plat maps about some of our early settlers. We use genealogy records, the Monroe County Li-brary, farm and street directories, old maps, Fultonhisotry.com, Webgen.com, census records, immigration recordsand military records to find what is needed. Training provided. Work from the office computer or yours at home. Itis an interesting project which will add valuable information to our archives.

Presently, we are researching families who lived in our 1850’s farm house, Samuel and George Latta, thenurseries and flower growers in Greece, Native Americans as they summered along our shores, the hamlets of North Greece and Greece Center.

Please contact me at the Society office (I work Monday 9:30am-12pm), 225-7221, [email protected] , or you may reach me at home, 225-5305 or [email protected] , to help take partin this much needed project even for a limited time.
