Treasures From Our Tradition Earlier this autumn, we looked at how our Eucharistic Prayers have been en-riched by the approval of several new prayers to augment the old Roman Canon. For us, there are the four standard pray-ers, three for Masses with Children, and the most recent addition, the former Swiss Eucharistic Prayer with four alternative forms (now known as the Eucharistic Pray-er for Masses for Various Needs and Occa-sions). We also have two Eucharistic Pray-ers for Masses of Reconciliation. The source for these two prayers is the re-quest by many bishops for a special pray-er for the “Holy Year” of 1975. Originally, the committee in charge was commis-sioned to write a single prayer, but the theme proved so rich that it gave rise to two. The first is based on and develops biblical texts on reconciliation. The second starts with the experience of living in to-day’s fractured world, and how the Spirit calls us to reconciliation and peace. Not everyone was happy with all this creativity, saying that if too many were published, it would be difficult for the Vatican to control further requests. Everyone thought the pope would put strict limits on the prayers, but in the end he said he was willing to open doors that had long been closed. Although he approved them for a period of only three years, they were never formally removed from the Sacramentary and have been incorporated into the new Roman Missal. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DID YOU KNOW? Online Grooming Learning all we can about how preda-tors groom children through online con-tact is key to keeping them safe at all times. Language is a predator’s tool for grooming online. One tactic that online predators use to groom a potential vic-tim is by complimenting and reinforcing their self-image as a way of normalizing their interactions. Compliments are used to build trust, desensitize, and mentally or emotionally isolate the po-tential victim from others. It is im-portant to remember that monitoring the online communication of young people on chats, apps, gaming web-sites, etc. is key in preventing abuse. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “The Language of Online Grooming,” visit: http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx or call 213-637-7508.
