Bless Your Door on the Feast of the Epiphany The gospel tells us that the magi found Christ “on entering the house.” The door to your home is a holy threshold. You can bless those who come in and go out by inscribing above the door in chalk the first two numbers of the year +C+M+B and the last two numbers of the year - (20 C+M+B 19). Tradition tells us that the letters stand for the names of the ma-gi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. After inscribing the doorway, say this prayer: God of Bethlehem and Cana, God of Jordan’s leaping wa-ters, in baptism you bring us into your family. You wed us and embrace us as your beloved. May we fill this place with kindness to one another, with hospi-tality to our guests. Amen.

Solemnidad de la Epifanía del Señor
Mt 2, 1-12
Jesús nació en Belén de Judá, en tiempos del rey Hero-des. Unos magos de oriente lle-garon entonces a Jerusalén y pre-guntaron: "¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que acaba de nacer?
Porque vimos surgir su estrella y hemos venido a adorar-lo". Al enterarse de esto, el rey Herodes se sobresaltó y toda Jerusalén con él. Convocó entonces a los sumos sacerdotes y a los escribas del pueblo y les preguntó dón-de tenía que nacer el Mesías. Ellos le contestaron: "En Belén de Judá, porque así lo ha escrito el profeta: Y tú, Belén, tierra de Judá, no eres en manera alguna la menor entre las ciudades ilustres de Judá, pues de ti saldrá un jefe, que será el pastor de mi pueblo, Israel". Entonces Herodes llamó en secreto a los magos, para que le precisaran el tiempo en que se les había apare-cido la estrella y los mandó a Belén, diciéndoles: "Vayan a averiguar cuidadosamente qué hay de ese niño y, cuando lo encuentren, avísenme para que yo también vaya a ado-rarlo". Después de oír al rey, los magos se pusieron en camino, y de pronto la estrella que habían visto surgir, comenzó a guiarlos, hasta que se detuvo encima de donde estaba el niño. Al ver de nuevo la estrella, se llenaron de inmensa alegría. Entraron en la casa y vieron al niño con María, su madre, y postrándose, lo adoraron. Después, abriendo sus cofres, le ofrecieron regalos: oro, incienso y mirra. Advertidos durante el sueño de que no volvieran a Herodes, regresaron a su tierra por otro camino.

Santa Gertrudis de Delft Fiesta el 6 de enero.
Mientras trabajaba como sirvienta en Delft en los Paí-ses Bajos, Gertrude estaba comprometida para casarse. Pero su prometido rompió con ella y se casó con otra mujer. Con el co-razón roto al principio, Gertrude gradualmente superó su angus-tia y eligió una nueva dirección para su vida. Se unió a las Bé-guines en Delft y pasó el resto de su vida entre ellas. Las belgui-nas eran hermandades de mujeres célibes que vivían en hogares comunes, oraban juntas y se dedicaban a las obras de misericor-dia. Béguines podría tener propiedades y dejar que la comuni-dad se case. Pero cuando Gertrude se sumergió en su nueva vida, todos los pensamientos sobre el matrimonio se evapora-ron. Incluso se hizo amiga de la mujer que había robado a su prometido. Cuando Santa Gertrudis se abrió a Dios en oración, él parece haber tocado su alma muy personalmente. Y aunque a mi mente le gusta vagar y distraerse con cosas perecederas, sin embargo, cuando vuelvo a mi corazón, te encuentro allí. Así que no puedo quejarme de que me has deja-do, ni por un momento, desde ese momento hasta este año, el noveno desde que recibí esta gracia. Solo una vez sentí que me dejaste por un período de 11 días. Me pareció que esto sucedió a causa de la participación con el mundo. Entonces tu humani-dad más dulce y tu estupenda caridad te impulsaron a buscar-me. Había alcanzado tal grado de locura que ya no pensaba más en la grandeza del tesoro que había perdido. Ni siquiera recuer-do haber sentido en ese momento ninguna pena por haberla perdido, ni ningún deseo de recuperarla. Dibújame y úneme completamente a ti mismo. Permítame permanecer inseparable-mente unido a usted, incluso cuando estoy obligado a realizar tareas externas por el bien de mi vecino. Y después puedo vol-ver a buscarte dentro de mí cuando los haya logrado. El Viernes Santo, 1340, aparecieron imágenes de las heridas de Cristo en el cuerpo de Gertrude. Durante un tiempo estas marcas dolorosas sangraron siete veces al día. La palabra de los estigmas de Gertrude se extendió por todo el país. Mu-chas personas interrumpieron su soledad orante para ver los fenómenos que le pidió a Dios que hiciera algo al respecto. Así que el sangrado se detuvo, pero las marcas y el dolor permane-cieron con ella por el resto de su vida. Durante los próximos 18 años, Gertrude sufrió pacien-temente todos los días. Objawienie Pańskie Gdy zaś Jezus narodził się w Betlejem w Judei za panowania króla Heroda, oto Mędrcy ze Wschodu przybyli do Jerozolimy i pytali: «Gdzie jest nowo narodzony król żydowski? Ujrzeliśmy bowiem jego gwiazdę na Wschodzie i przybyli-śmy oddać mu pokłon». Skoro to usłyszał król Herod, przeraził się, a z nim cała Jerozolima. Zebrał więc wszystkich arcykapłanów i uczo-nych ludu i wypytywał ich, gdzie ma się naro-dzić Mesjasz. Ci mu odpowiedzieli: «W Betle-jem judzkim, bo tak napisał Prorok: A ty, Betle-jem, ziemio Judy, nie jesteś zgoła najlichsze spośród głównych miast Judy, albowiem z cie-bie wyjdzie władca, który będzie pasterzem lu-du mego, Izraela». Wtedy Herod przywołał po-tajemnie Mędrców i wypytał ich dokładnie o czas ukazania się gwiazdy. A kierując ich do Betlejem, rzekł: «Udajcie się tam i wypytujcie starannie o Dziecię, a gdy Je znajdziecie, do-nieście mi, abym i ja mógł pójść i oddać Mu po-kłon». Oni zaś wysłuchawszy króla, ruszyli w drogę. A oto gwiazda, którą widzieli na Wscho-dzie, szła przed nimi, aż przyszła i zatrzymała się nad miejscem, gdzie było Dziecię. Gdy uj-rzeli gwiazdę, bardzo się uradowali. Weszli do domu i zobaczyli Dziecię z Matką Jego, Maryją; upadli na twarz i oddali Mu pokłon. I otworzyw-szy swe skarby, ofiarowali Mu dary: złoto, ka-dzidło i mirrę. A otrzymawszy we śnie nakaz, żeby nie wracali do Heroda, inną drogą udali się do swojej ojczyzny.

Objawienie Pańskie
Trzej Królowie Pokłon Mędrców ze Wschodu złożony Dziecięciu Jezus, o p i s y w a n y w Ewangelii przez św. Mateusza (Mt 2, 1-12), sym-bolizuje pokłon świata pogan, wszystkich ludzi, którzy klękają przed Bogiem Wcielonym. To jed-no z najstarszych świąt w Kościele. Trzej królo-wie być może byli astrologami, którzy ujrzeli gwiazdę - znak narodzin Króla. Jednak pozosta-nie tajemnicą, w jaki sposób stała się ona dla nich czytelnym znakiem, który wyprowadził ich w
daleką i niebezpieczną podróż do Jerozolimy. Herod podejmując ich dowiaduje się o celu po-dróży. Podejrzewa, że narodził się rywal. Na pod-stawie proroctwa w księdze Micheasza (Mi 5, 1) kapłani jako miejsce narodzenia Mesjasza wy-mieniają Betlejem. Tam wyruszają Mędrcy. Od-najdując Dziecię Jezus, ofiarowują mu swe dary. Otrzymawszy we śnie wskazówkę, aby nie wra-cali do Heroda, udają się do swoich krajów inną drogą. Uroczystość Objawienia Pańskiego należy do pierwszych, które uświęcił Kościół. Na Wscho-dzie pierwsze jej ślady spotykamy już w III w. Te-go właśnie dnia obchodził Kościół grecki święto Bożego Narodzenia, ale w treści znacznie posze-rzonej: jako uroczystość Epifanii, czyli zjawienia się Boga na ziemi w tajemnicy wcielenia. Na Za-chodzie uroczystość Objawienia Pańskiego datu-je się od końca IV w. (oddzielnie od Bożego Na-rodzenia). W Trzech Magach pierwotny Kościół widzi siebie, świat pogański, całą rodzinę ludzką, wśród której zjawił się Chrystus, a która w swoich przedstawi-cielach przychodzi z krańców świata złożyć Mu pokłon. Dla podkreślenia uniwersalności zbaw-czej misji Chrystusa Pana, tradycja chrześcijań-ska wśród Magów od bardzo już dawna umiesz-cza także Murzyna. Uniwersalność zbawienia ak-centują także: sama nazwa święta, jego wysoka ranga i wszystkie teksty liturgii dzisiejszego dnia. Od XV/XVI w. w kościołach poświęca się dziś ka-dzidło i kredę. Kredą oznaczamy drzwi na znak, że w naszym mieszkaniu przyjęliśmy Wcielonego Syna Bożego. Piszemy na drzwiach litery i cyfry:

The Magi seek out Jesus and do him homage. Background on the Gospel Reading The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of the Holy Fami-ly’s flight into Egypt. Mat-
thew’s Gospel tells a version of Jesus’ birth that is differ-ent than the one in Luke. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Mat-thew tells us little more than, “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod . . . ” The story of the census is found only in Luke’s Gospel, but we hear about the visit of the Magi only in Matthew’s Gospel. We know little about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to Bethlehem, following an astrologi-cal sign, so we believe them to be astrologers. We assume that there were three Magi based upon the naming of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel, they represent the Gentiles’ search for a savior. Because the Magi represent the entire world, they also represent our search for Jesus. We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of Jesus’ role in salvation. We believe the meaning of the gifts to be Christological. Gold is present-ed as representative of Jesus’ kingship. Frankincense is a symbol of his divinity because priests burned the sub-stance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus’ death. The word Epiphany means “manifestation” or “showing forth.” Historically several moments in Christ’s early life and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” including his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his first miracle at Ca-na.
Saint Raymond of Penyafort Feast day January 7
As a lawyer, priest, and preacher, St. Raymond of Penyafort made a significant mark on the history of Spain and the church. His preaching helped re-Christianize Spain after the Moors were overthrown. And his com-pilation of papal and conciliar decrees was the main source of canon law for seven centuries. An accomplished lawyer and scholar, Raymond joined the Domini-cans at Barcelona in 1222. The 47-year-old novice was assigned to develop a book of case studies for confessors that helped to shape the medieval church’s penitential system. Also a gifted
preacher, Raymond had remarkable success evangelizing Moors and Jews. And he traveled throughout Spain reju-venating the spiritual life of Christians that the Moors had enslaved. Among his main themes were spiritual combat and standing firm in trials. Listen to his voice in this letter:
The preacher of God’s truth has told us that all who want to live righteously in Christ will suffer persecution. . . . the only exception to this general statement is, I think, the person who ei-ther neglects, or does not know how, to live tem-perately, justly and righteously in this world. May you never be numbered among those whose house is peaceful, quiet and free from care; those on whom the Lord’s chastisement does not de-scend; those who live out their days in prosperity, and in the twinkling of an eye will go down to hell. Your purity of life, your devotion, deserve and call for a reward; because you are acceptable and pleasing to God your purity of life must be made purer still, by frequent buffetings, until you attain perfect sincerity of heart. If from time to time you feel the sword falling on you with dou-ble or treble force, this also should be seen as sheer joy and the mark of love. The two-edged sword consists in conflict without, fears within. It falls with double or treble force within, when the cunning spirit troubles the depths of your heart with guile and enticements. . . .The sword falls with double and treble force externally when, without cause, persecution breaks out from within the church, where wounds are more serious, espe-cially when inflicted by friends. This is that envi-able and blessed cross of Christ . . . the cross in which alone we must make our boast, as Paul, God’s chosen instrument, has told us.
In 1230, Pope Gregory IX brought Raymond to Rome as his confessor. There Raymond collected all the decrees of popes and councils since 1150. Because they were so well arranged, canonists relied on Raymond’s Decretals until the new codification of 1917. Characteristically, Raymond tried to dodge eccle-siastical appointments. In 1236, illness saved him from becoming archbishop of Tarragona. But he could not avoid his election as the third general of the Dominicans in 1238. But when he reformed the Dominican rule, he slipped in a clause allowing early retirement of office holders. And he used it to retire in 1240. But he continued to work 35 more years, focusing on bringing Jews and Moors to Christ. To equip Catholics for this work he introduced the study of Hebrew and Ara-bic among Dominicans and persuaded Thomas Aquinas to write his Summa Contra Gentes as an evangelistic tool. Raymond told his general that ten thousand Moors had been baptized through the efforts of the Dominicans. He died at 100 years of age in 1275. from Voices of the Saints, by Bert Ghezzi
