Dear Parish Family, We’re in the middle of summer trying to rest and relax and enjoy the long days of sunlight, while en-

joying our favorite pastime: complaining about our

baseball teams! And, the Gospel tells us to be watchful and vigilant in preparation for the Lord’s

future coming.

While we live in the expectation of the coming of

the Lord in the future, we also know that the Lord

expects us to live our lives fully in the present, with energy and enthusiasm, because we believe that we

help build the future of the Lord’s kingdom.

And, how do we live in the present and prepare for

the Lord’s coming again? We live by faith, hope and

love. As disciples of Christ, we are called to trust in the promise of God, even when what is promised

seems impossible. As followers of Christ, we give

life to our faith through our very real and practical everyday actions of love, that gives hope to the

world around us. In faith, we put our trust in God,

and then carry out our responsibilities to be a peo-ple of charity.

Our Religious Education Program is currently regis-

tering students for the coming year; classes begin on Sunday, September 18th. Please encourage, not

only your own family members to be part of our pro-

gram, but also encourage your neighbors to become part of it. And, if you know of anyone interested in

becoming a part of our Catholic family, invite them

to consider our RICA program. Sincerely,

Fr. Tom

P.S. I am still waiting for the survey results from

“Renew My Church” that we took months ago. As soon as the results become available to me, they will

be presented to you.

News and notes

Hundreds of thousands of young Catholic

pilgrims journeyed to Kraków in Poland

for six days of music, prayer and spiritual

masterclasses, with Pope Francis headlining

an event labelled by some as “Glastonbury

with God.”

More than 330,000 pilgrims registered for World Youth

Day, a global Catholic festival that last took place three

years ago in Rio, with tens of thousands more expected to

attend. Most were Europeans, but more than 180 coun-

tries were represented at the event, July 25th—31st.

The young Catholics were joined by 800 bishops, includ-

ing 70 cardinals, and 20,000 priests. Their attendance fig-

ures grew when huge numbers of Poles descended on Kra-

ków for the Papal Mass on Sunday, with some estimating

a turnout of up to 2 million. More than 92% of Poland’s

38.5 million population is Catholic.

During his first trip to Poland, Pope Francis visited Ausch-

witz-Birkenau, the Nazi death camp where more than a

million people died between 1940 and 1945, and the

Jasna Góra monastery in Częstochowa, that contains the

famous 14th-century icon of the Black Madonna.

At Auschwitz, the Pope cancelled a scheduled speech, say-

ing he would prefer to mark his visit with silent prayer. “I

would like to go to that place of horror without speeches,

without crowds – only the few people necessary,” he told

reporters last month. “Alone, enter, pray, and may the

Lord give me the grace to cry.”

Bring flowers to the fairest… On August 13 and 14th, parishioners are invited to bring up flowers at the Offertory during Mass to the Mary statues in church in honor of her Assumption into Heaven.

August 15th falls on a Monday, so it is not a holyday of obligation.
