REFLECTIONAs you begin this new school year, your teachers, your friends, and your families will find an enormous number of ways to be of service to you. How will you respond to their gestures and efforts? With thanks and appreciation for their hard work, and by making your own special efforts to express your love and care for those around you?
Often it is easy to take the efforts of others for granted, and we forget to say thank you. We can be oblivious to the amount of time and preparation which those around us put in just to make our everyday lives run smoothly. This can range from having our sandwiches made for school, or a clean uniform ready when we need it, to the preparation a teacher makes before each lesson. Unless we are careful it is easier to criticise than to appreciate.
Serving one another is one way in which Jesus expects us to show love for others. It is something we are all called to do; it is the ‘hallmark’ of every Christian. ‘By your love for one another everyone will recognise you as my disciples’.
Father, We Come Before You...
Father, we come before you in love to ask you to listen to the prayers of your children:We pray that as Christians we will serve God and one another by becoming instruments of love in God’s hands, by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and befriending the homeless and unwanted.
Silence Lord of Love: Response - help us to serve you.
We pray that we will be encouraged and inspired by the life of St Matthew who responded to Jesus’ call to follow him.

We pray that we will satisfy our neighbour’s hunger for love by giving them a smile, sharing a glass of water, or simply making time to talk and listen.

We pray that God will give us the strength and courage to allow ourselves to go wherever he sends us, and do whatever he asks.

We pray that our eyes will open to see Christ in the faces of our neighbours, and our hearts will open to respond lovingly to their needs.

Knowing that our heavenly Father is listening, in the silence of our hearts let us share our own unspoken prayers with him.

Loving Father of all here present.You have created each of us in your image.You accept each of us as we are.As members of St Matthew's school,living out our community mission day by daywe promise to always imitate you in the way
we deal with each other.
We promise always to acknowledge that each individual one of us, pupil or adult, is special in your eyes and in this school.We promise always to treat each other with respect and courtesy.
We promise always to support each other in friendship and learning and times of need.
We promise to honour you in our community in daily prayers together.
We promise always to co-operate with our teachers and each other in working and learning together.
We promise always to show concern for each others’ wellbeing and that of all who look to our community in their need.
We commit ourselves seriously to these promises on the feast day of our patron St. Matthew and in the presence and hearing of the community.
Heavenly Father we ask your guidance and strength
in keeping these promises so that together we build a community where your
kingdom is present day by day. Amen

The Calling of Saint Matthew is a masterpiece by
Michelangelo Merisi da
Caravaggio, depicting
the moment at which Jesus Christ inspires Matthew to follow him. It
was completed in 1599-1600 for the Contarelli
Chapel .

The painting depicts the story from the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 9:9): "Jesus saw a man named Matthew at his seat in the custom house, and said to him, "Follow me", and Matthew rose and followed him."
Caravaggio depicts Matthew the tax
collector sitting at a table with three other men. Jesus Christ and Saint
Peter have entered the room, and
Jesus is pointing at Matthew. A beam of light illuminates
the faces of the men at the table
who are looking at Christ.

• There is some debate over which man in the picture is Saint Matthew, as the surprised gesture of the bearded man at the table can be read in two ways.
• Most writers on the painting assume Saint Matthew to be the bearded man, and see him to be pointing at himself, as if to ask "Me?" in response to Christ. A more recent interpretation proposes that the bearded man is in fact pointing at the young man at the end of the table, whose head is slumped. In this reading, the bearded man is asking "Him?, and the painting is depicting the moment immediately before Matthew raises his head to see Christ. Other writers describe the painting as deliberately uncertain.

Who was St Matthew?Among the early followers
and apostles of Jesus, Matthew is mentioned
in the New Testament as a former tax collector from Capernaum.
Matthew was "called" by Jesus to be one of
the Twelve Disciples. According to the
New Testament he was one of the witnesses of the Resurrection and
the Ascension.

• Matthew collected taxes from the Hebrew people for Herod Antipas. Jews who became rich in this way were hated and considered outcasts.
• Jesus called Matthew to be one of the Twelve Disciples. After his call, Matthew invited Jesus home for a feast. On seeing this, the Scribes and the Pharisees criticized Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners. This prompted Jesus to answer, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners” (Mark 2:17)
