Bernadette Flood PhD MPSI Senior Pharmacist

Bernadette Flood is a pharmacist who has experience working in maternity, psychiatric and general hospitals. She has worked for the past 16 years in a

residential care centre that is home to people ageing with intellectual disabilities.

Bernadette has a M. Sc in Primary Health Care from RCSI and has an interest in the determinants of health and in health and health care inequalities and inequities.

She is particularly interested in the medication use process in the population ageing with intellectual disabilities.

Bernadette was conferred with a PhD in Trinity College Dublin in 2016 and developed Quality Indicators for medication use in people with intellectual disabilities and behaviour disorders. Her project work also involved interviewing people with intellectual disabilities who live in the community.

Bernadette’s presentation today describes some of what she learnt about the medicines use process from the people she interviewed.

Colum GibsonEnvironmental Consultant Green Healthcare Programme

Dr. Colum Gibson is an environmental consultant and researcher with the Clean Technology Centre (CTC) at Cork Institute of Technology. CTC has been a leading organisation in the field of prevention since being established in 1992. Colum is currently involved in a number of different national programmes funded under the EPA’s National Waste Prevention Programme including Stop Food Waste, Local Authority Prevention Network, Green Business and Green Healthcare. In addition, he is leading a research project investigating the main types and causes of food waste generated in a variety of commercial businesses, including healthcare facilities, with a view to providing information and techniques on how best to prevent this waste.

Catherine Casey CMIOSH Global – Group Environmental, Health and Safety Lead UDG Healthcare plc

Catherine initially forged an academic route into EHS through a Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion and then a Master of Science in Environmental, Health and Safety Management from Dublin Institute of Technology. This led her to a career in London, where she worked for the NHS and then the world renowned National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

In her current role as Global Group Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Lead at UDG Healthcare plc, Catherine is continually altering and updating her approach to EHS, while responding to what is a rapidly shifting landscape.

UDG Healthcare operates across 23 different countries with 8,000 staff to deliver clinical, commercial, communication and packaging services

to the healthcare industry. The structure of the business is complex, with three core divisions and an acquisitive growth programme that has become a core element of its success.

Colm O’RourkeBusiness Development OfficerNSAI Medical Devices

Colm O’Rourke is the new Business Development Officer for NSAI Medical Devices. The Kerry native joined the National Standards Authority of Ireland last September and works in the organisation’s new offices in Galway. Colm is a trained medical scientist and has worked in hospital laboratories in Ireland and Australia. He has also volunteered in Ghana where he worked in a Blood Transfusion laboratory in the Tamale Teaching Hospital. He worked for a number of years with a Point of Care diagnostics company in both the sales and applications side of the business. Colm is a graduate of UCC with a BSc in Biomedical Science. At the National Health Expo, Colm will be discussing the new medical device regulations and its impacts on industry.

Colette Myler – Project Manager, Requirements and Procurement Professional Ireland Hospital & Health Care

Colette Myler has worked in many areas of St James’s Hospital initially as a receptionist and clerk and finally as the Hospital’s Freedom of Information and Complaint’s Officer. Colette then moved to Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin where she began to work with the Project and Development Department and found that project work suited her, so she took up a course in Project Management at the Blanchardstown Institute of Technology. While in Crumlin, Colette worked on the specification documents for procurement of extensive equipment for ten new operating theatres and went on to Project Manage the new MRI and Gamma Camera diagnostic unit. From there, Colette moved on to work at the National Rehabilitation Hospital where she is currently the Equipping Officer for the New Hospital Project Development.

Colette specialises in Project, Requirements and Procurement Management in the Healthcare Sector, she is experienced in the preparation of equipment or service tender specification and the completion of firm but fair evaluation. Colette understands the importance of equipment functionality and the wider consequences of procuring such as the complexities of installation, commissioning, training and acceptance.

Colette has travelled to exhibitions in Ireland, Chicago, Milan and Dusseldorf to build up a knowledge base on the technology and standards that will impact healthcare equipment and services of the future.

Eamon Farrell is the Manager of Acute Care at Home and Ambulatory Older Persons Services in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. Eamon qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2001. He became a locality manager of Intermediate Care and Community Stroke Services in 2010 prior to taking lead the development and implementation of the new Acute Care at Home Service for Older People.

Edel Lynch has been a medical writer at 3D4Medical since 2014 and has progressed to leading the Medical Education department within the company.

Edel graduated from the University College Dublin with a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience in 2013 and received a Master’s degree in Neuroscience from Trinity College Dublin the following year. Eoin is a Director of STW and leads our healthcare team. He brings over 40 years of experience and knowledge of international best practice to bear at every scale, from campus-wide development control plans and projects valued in excess of £100m to individual theatre refurbishments and detailing for infection control.

He has completed over €500 million worth of projects at two of Ireland’s largest acute teaching hospitals and he continues to represent STW on Consultants Frameworks for University College London Hospitals and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.

Eoin’s spectrum of experience spans from maternity and primary care through acute hospitals to palliative and elderly care. His particular expertise in cancer facilities includes oncology day care, nuclear medicine departments, specialist cancer wards and a network of specialised radiopharmaceutical production units, was instrumental in securing STW’s appointment to design and deliver the UK’s first Proton Beam Therapy Centre at University College London Hospital.

Eoin’s continued involvement on several acute hospital sites over several decades is evidence of his ability to respond to evolving needs of healthcare clients and lead change in the healing environment.

Eoin’s skills in fulfilling specialist technical briefs are further demonstrated in his completed buildings for broadcast media, telecommunications, financial and enterprise-focused clients.

Elizabeth McCarthy, PhD Senior Manager, Health & Public Sector Consulting – Deloitte

Elizabeth is a member of the Health & Public Sector team within Deloitte Consulting’s Strategy and Operations practice. Following completion of a PhD in Computer Science & Informatics, Elizabeth joined Deloitte Consulting and focussed primarily on project, service and change management in large scale IT implementations, and the application of data analytics to solving business issues. Elizabeth later brought this consulting experience to Oneview Healthcare, a provider of innovative patient

Edith Blennerhassett Associate Director Arup

Edith is an Associate Director at Arup and a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years of experience of providing high quality building services design solutions for a wide range of projects. Edith is passionate about her work and has particular expertise in sustainable design. Edith believes that the best solutions are achieved through sharing of a common goal and close collaboration with Clients and Design Team members and other construction professionals through all stages of the design and construction process.

Edith is a recognised leader in her field and has lectured extensively in the UK and Ireland on energy efficiency and the role which good building services design can play in achieving excellent buildings. Edith is currently leading the mechanical and electrical design for the new children’s hospital project which will achieve an A3 BER rating as required of government buildings. Emmylou FloresM.Sc. in Project Management StudentUniversity of Limerick

Having completed a BSc in Health Informatics at the University of Limerick (UL), Emmylou Flores is now undertaking a MSc in Project Management also at UL. For her placement, as part of her degree programme, Flores worked as a data analyst with a group of physiotherapist in a company that focuses on providing rehabilitation content via mobile devices. Her final year project made recommendations for inclusion in a mHealth strategy for Ireland, paying particular attention to information governance, having reviewed efforts of several countries and examining the existing policies, procedures, legislation and so forth in Ireland. For her dissertation, Flores is expected to focus on the area of data warehousing in the Irish hospital sector.

Fiona McDaidEmergency Nurse , Health Service ExecutiveIreland

I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in Cardiff. My career in emergency nursing has spanned 30 years, having undertaken the ENB 199 in Accident and Emergency Nursing, Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Practice (Emergency Nursing), and an MSc (Nursing). I have also been awarded a Fellowship in Emergency Nursing from the Faculty of Emergency Nursing UK (FFEN). I have worked in a number of emergency departments in the UK and Ireland, most recently as CNM3 in the Emergency Department in Naas General Hospital.

During my career I have overseen the introduction of many innovations in the delivery of emergency care. My special areas of interest within emergency nursing are care of the multiple trauma patient, major emergency planning, parasuicide / suicide and the care of the suddenly bereaved.

I was appointed Nursing Lead to the National Emergency Medicine Programme (EMP) in August 2010. I am the chair of the Emergency Nursing Interest Group which was established to offer a collective, informed view of Emergency Nursing for the EMP, and has representation from all Emergency Departments / Local Injury Units. I have presented a variety of EMP related nursing innovations at conferences both nationally and internationally and co-authored a number of emergency nursing related articles.

I have recently been appointed to the Pre-hospital Emergency Care Council and the Board of the Faculty of Emergency Nursing.

My name is Gary Walsh and I am Technical Sales

Manager at ReAgent Chemical Services Ltd. I started my career in the chemical industry 35 years ago, working within the quality laboratories at Joseph Crosfield & Sons in Warrington, and remained within the Unilever organisation for 30 years. During this time I worked across a multitude of functions, including product development, technical service, sales and marketing and business development, predominantly in the industrial detergent and hygiene businesses. Whilst based at our Runcorn office, I regularly attend conferences, exhibitions and meet with new and existing customers to discuss and assess their on-going needs and requirements, whether that is off-the-shelf chemicals or bespoke product development and contract manufacturing.

As the Sales Manager, I am responsible for a team of eight Technical Sales Specialists and Product Development Chemists. The team handle enquiries from industrial, institutional, engineering, healthcare and educational customers in all manner of chemical reagents and solutions. Typical product offerings range from 1ml ampoules to 27 tonne road tankers.

Ignazio GraffeoRegistrar in Psychiatry Presso HSE

Promotor and First Author in Academic Researches on the field of the CyberTherapy and CyberPsychiatry in Italy, he gained huge experience with Neuro Virtual Reality (full NeuroVR2 Trained). He was one of the first to study the relationships and the interrelations between Social Media and Mental Health issues, using the major social networks as a mean for trying to help people in distress. He is actually developing a project in order to bring Psychiatrists and Mental Health Operators nearer to the Patients in need.

Dr. Justin Brophy- MB, BCh, BAO, MMed Sc, Dip Medical Leadership and Safety, Wicklow Ireland

Dr Justin Brophy is Clinical Lead Advisor to the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP). He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Psychiatrists and Past President of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland. He is a Consultant Psychiatrist in HSE Wicklow Mental Health Services, and Chair of the Irish Association of Suicidology . He supports the NOSP team in fulfilling the objectives of Connecting for Life and will develop initiatives to strengthen clinical practice in suicide prevention in that context. He formerly served as a Member of the National Patient Safety Advisory Group and the Expert Group on Mental Health.

James is a London-based partner who leads Kennedys’ international corporate and commercial healthcare and life sciences team.

Qualifying in 2000, James specialises in advising both private and public sector corporate and commercial clients in the healthcare, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and medical technology industries.

Jessie Barr MSc. is a doctoral candidate at UL investigating mental health stigma and well-being among athletes. A 2012 Olympian, she is also employed as a Sky Sports Living for Sport Athlete Mentor and was a guest speaker at the Mental Health in Sport panel at the Electric Picnic.

June Boulger –National Lead, Patient and Public Partnership, Acute Hospitals Directorate – HSE.

June has been working in Health Services since 1999. Her first appointment as Health Promotion Specialist for Workplace Health, Midland Health Board (MHB), led to the implementation of an organisational wide programme aimed at healthcare staff which was entitled the Quality of Working Life Project –Midland Health Board. June was also appointed by the MHB as lead for the promotion of

physical activity under the National Cardiovascular Strategy. In 2006, June was appointed as National Lead Service User Involvement, HSE. June has led on the development of the National Healthcare Charter –You and Your Health Service, many patient empowerment initiatives and research into the patient’s experience of health services. Special interests include staff well-being and its impact on patient outcomes, patient empowerment and patient partnership in healthcare. June lectured part-time in Health Policy and delivers guest lectures in Health Promotion.

Dr. Kieran JordanResearch Officer, Food Safety Department, Teagasc, Moorepark, Fermoy, Ireland.

Dr. Kieran Jordan is Research Officer at the Food Safety Department, Teagasc, Moorepark, Fermoy. His research interests include aspects of the foodborne pathogens Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli O157:H7, and Cronobacter spp., including occurrence, persistence and survival. His work involves combining molecular methods with traditional methods to maximize the understanding of the pathogens.

Dr Louise Hopper Post-doctoral Researcher School of Nursing and Human Sciences Dublin City University

Louise Hopper, Ph.D in psychology, post-doctoral researcher at Dublin City University. Louise graduated with a B.Sc. in Computer Science from Trinity College Dublin in 1993 and worked in various information technology roles in Ireland and in the US from 1988 to 2001. She subsequently worked as a project manager in VHI Healthcare until she returned to Trinity College to study psychology, completing her Ph.D. in 2013. Louise has worked as a Lecturer in Psychology and she is now a senior post-doctoral researcher in Dublin City University. Her recent projects include assistive technology to promote independence for people with dementia,

Miriam Dowling, is the founder of Mentality, a business consultancy practice, focused solely on the area of mental health in the workplace. Miriam previously ran an awareness project called Don’t Mind the Gap, highlighting the challenges those dealing with mental ill health have in the workplace.

Miriam has recently completed an MBA (HRM) researching the area of disclosure of mental illness during the recruitment process.

As a See Change Ambassador, Miriam has spoken publicly about her experience of mental illness to businesses. Miriam was honoured to speak at the inaugural launch of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Strategy Statement in City Hall last year. Dr Mark BowmanDirector Arche Innovations Ltd, Wales

Dr Mark Bowman has enjoyed a diverse career spanning academic research, university technology transfer and seed stage venture capital investment.

In 2016, he co-founded PulmonIR Ltd with Professor Paul Lewis, focused on the diagnosis and monitoring of lung disease. Dr Bowman is currently serving as Chief Executive Officer of the company.

In 2010, Mark led a highly successful turnaround of the Cardiff Medicentre, a life sciences incubator based on the University Hospital of Wales campus in Cardiff.

Since founding Arche Innovations Ltd in 2012, his assignments have included conducting a comprehensive life sciences IP audit for IP Group plc, assisting the launch of the Innovation Village at GE Healthcare in Cardiff, directing the highly successful investment readiness programme InvestorG8 at Swansea University, and managing the recently concluded Swansea Healthcare Innovation Partnership Programme (SHIPP).

Marijke MorrisChairperson – Independent Speech-Language Therapists of Ireland (ISTI)

Marijke is the Chairperson of Independent Speech-Language Therapists of Ireland (ISTI) and the Lead Clinician for CATTS, and independent SLT & OT practice.

She has more than 19 years’ experience in Speech and Language Therapy. Marijke qualified and worked in South Africa before moving to Ireland in 2001. Her degree also includes qualification as an Audiologist. She founded CATTS in late 2009 after several years working in the public health system. Marijke also co-founded BrainDrain, an online learning platform in 2016.

Her experience includes working as part of multidisciplinary teams in general Private Practice, Intellectual Disability, Visual Impairment and Autistic Spectrum Disorder, with a wide variety of ages and disorders. She has extensive direct clinical experience in speech and language therapy, management and supervision.

Marijke also has experience in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), including Lamh (signing), the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and high tech communication devices. Marijke is a qualified tutor in Lámh, Elklan and Hanen.

Michael Thick – Chief Medical Officer (CMO) & Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO) of Electronic Patient Record Software Pioneer IMS MAXIMS

Michael is a renowned health informatics leader, best known for his position as CCIO for the UK’s National Programme for IT, and senior medical advisor to the Choose and Book and PACS programmes.

His achievements include working with the end of life team at The Royal Marsden Foundation Trust to co-design Coordinate My Care, a shared end of life care register, and the introduction of the ‘clinical five’ into the Department of Health’s 2008 health informatics review – a basis for fundamental clinical functionality within a hospital today.

Michael’s achievements at a national level have been preceded by an established career within clinical practice. After qualifying as a doctor in 1976 from Cambridge University, he went on to become director of liver and renal transplantation at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, and served as chairman of the IM&T Strategy Committee for the city’s hospitals.

Michael leads IMS MAXIMS continued focus on clinical excellence and applies his valuable insight and experience into software design, product development and change programmes for healthcare providers.

Maureen Walsh – Managing Director, DeCare Dental Operations and DeCare Dental Insurance Ireland

Originally from the US, Maureen moved to Ireland in 1999 to help establish DeCare Operations Ireland Limited, a claims and shared services centre based in Claremorris, Co. Mayo. Maureen has led DeCare Dental Insurance Ireland from start-up stages to become Ireland’s only specialist dental insurer and oral health company.

DeCare is proud to serve individuals and companies throughout Ireland, ranging in size from 10 to 5000 staff. Miriam GunningSenior HPO Tobacco Dept of Health Promotion & Improvement HSE

Miriam has a background in nursing and moved into health promotion in 2000. Since then she has specialized in tobacco management and smoking cessation.

She first graduated in pediatric and general nursing where she spent 20 years working in clinical and management roles in respiratory and cardiology. She specializes in the delivery of training in ‘Brief Interventions for Smoking Cessation’ to health professionals but her main project has been the development of ‘Tobacco Free Health Services’ in Ireland using the ENSH-Global Code and Process.

Krystian FikertCEO – MyMind Centre for Mental Wellbeing ROI

Krystian Fikert is the CEO and Founder of MyMind Centre for Mental Wellbeing, a non-profit, social enterprise that provides affordable and accessible mental health services within the community. Krystian set up MyMind in 2006 in response to Ireland’s complicated mental health system. With four national centres in Ireland, MyMind is bypassing the need for clinical referral, long waiting lists and high-cost services, empowering people to directly access mental health supports when they need them. In his work with MyMind, Krystian has been named an Ashoka fellow (2011), received multiple awards from Social Entrepreneurs Ireland (Level 2 2009, Elevator Programme Award 2011, Impact Award 2013), received the Captain Cathal Ryan Scholarship (2010), and won the Arthur Guinness Award in 2012. Throughout his professional career, Krystian has undergone further training from INSEAD – the Business School for the World. Stephen DonoghueIP and Commercialisation Research Manager - Swansea University Wales

Dr. Stephen Donoghue is currently the IP & Commercialisation Research Manager for Swansea University. He has previously occupied various technology transfer and consultancy roles at that institute. His original degree was in Biotechnology at DCU and after graduation he had a number of roles in industry, including developing recombinant haemoglobin and albumin for a biotech company, and cloning interleukins to expand in-house immunoassays for a big pharma. Dr. Donoghue then returned to academia to complete a PhD at the University of Leicester in the area of Molecular Pathology. After completing postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and University College Dublin he obtained a MSc in Pharmaceutical Medicine at Trinity and completed a law degree at Griffith College Dublin.

At Swansea Dr. Donoghue is responsible for managing the patent and IP portfolio of the University. He also manages the licensing activities for life sciences technologies and oversees the commercial contracts associated with various translational activities. He will be discussing the Swansea Healthcare Innovation Partnership Programme (SHIPP).

Seamus Browne Head of Industry Partnership at The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland

Seamus is Head of Industry Partnership at The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His role involves connecting RCSI researcher/clinician expertise with industry need and identifying appropriate funding mechanisms to support this engagement. Since taking up this role in January 2015, Seamus has played a key role in delivering a step-change in RCSI Industry Engagement activities. His current focus is on building large scale strategic partnerships with industry aligned to RCSI research strengths. Between 2007-2014, Seamus worked at as technology transfer officer at the University of Limerick. Seamus excelled in this multi-faceted role that extended well beyond the traditional technology transfer role of patent portfolio management and commercialisation. He led complex negotiations on a significant number of UL’s high value, research commercialisation agreements and played a catalytic role in the formation of a significant number of strategic partnerships between UL and industry. The quality of some of these partnerships has been recognised at the IMDA annual awards 2013 and 2015. Prior to working in UL, Seamus completed a PhD at Trinity College Dublin before undertaking a post-doctoral fellowship and working as a lecturer on the Trinity Access Programme.

During this time, he founded and managed two start-up companies.

Professor Thomas H Lynch is a consultant urological surgeon in St. James’s Hospital and TrinityCollege, Dublin. In addition to his special interest in Urological Oncology he is the lead urologist in laboratory based prostate cancer research with multiple publications in this area. He is a graduate of the National University of Ireland at Galway. He has an extensive training in urological oncology in the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Professor Lynch has a track record as an innovator, academic and teacher. He has lectured and published extensively on prostate cancer and has always been involved in new innovations in patient care.

He has a particular interest in laparoscopic surgery and also performs robotic surgery for men with localised early stage prostate cancer. He has been

He is a member of the lead clinicians group advising the National Cancer Control Programme on further improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of men with prostate and other urological cancers. He maintains his up to date knowledge and expertise by attending international scientific meetings and lecturing around the world. He has extensive experience as organiser and faculty member of several clinical and research meetings at national and international conferences.

He has won several grant bids for research and clinical funding. He has also won several awards including The British Journal of Urology International award, The British association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Prize and The International Association of Radiation Research Prize. He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and TrinityCollege, Dublin and is a reviewer for several peer review journals.

Tracy has previously managed the development of a new regulatory programme for National Data Collections, developed standards and guidance for health information and engaged with stakeholders to inform and encourage understanding and application of Information Governance. Willie developed his entrepreneurial skills early in his career and started his first venture when he was still in training at the Free University of Berlin School of Veterinary Medicine. He provided technical research services for a number of pharmaceutical and bio-chemical clients. His clients were seeking environmental (safety) data of chemical and pharmaceutical compounds. After he graduated from vet school, he provided veterinary research services to veterinary

pharmaceutical sponsors who studied environmental impact of their drugs.

In 1998 Willie moved into corporate organizations and turned to being a successful Intrapreneur. He consistently identified new opportunities within these organizations and turned them into profitable ventures.

During his career, he oversaw a variety of new developments, including a dedicated Late Phase EDC system, a Patient Portal, a “Single Sign On solution”, several medical devices in the Patient Reported Outcomes services area and analytical modules that support decisions in the lifecycle of a clinical trial. Bringing all of these together his team is now focusing on wearable devices in Clinical Research.
