Dear Delegates,

As Beyoncé once sang, “I was here”.

In the uture, you wll look back on ths sesson and say the very same thng, “I was there”. And just lke Beyoncé,you wll want to have let your mark n the mnds o oth-ers.

In your Commttees, you are dscussng essental currentEuropean ssues. A topc that s especally mportant to thetwo o us, s the challenge o clmate change. Te trutho global warmng s spreadng, however, there s stll a

worryngly low poltcal consensus on the topc amongthe world’s leaders. As the envronment s deteroratng, negotatons are leadng nowhere.

Smlar developments can be seen n all o ths sesson’stopcs, they are all callng out or acton. By recogns-

ng the mportance o the Commttee topcs andpartcpatng n the debates accordngly, youreact. As ar as clmate change s concerned, you can nuence the European leaders n aneven more drect way by statng your opnon

on clmate polcy n the European Youth Polls(www.polls.eyp.org/clmate). Te results wll be re-

ceved personally and commented on by the EuropeanCommssoner or Clmate Acton, Conne Hedegaard.

When t comes to the truth tsel, Rcky Gervas, the mod-ern hero o Brtsh comedy once sad:

“Te truth doesn’t hurt. Whatever t s, t’s always betterto know the truth.”

Tereore, do not hestate to nd and state the truth aboutyour topc, no matter how nconvenent t may be. Tanksto you, the truth s spreadng. Make sure to leave yourmark.

Yours truly,Your Editors,

 A successful family

Organsng an EYP sesson s a chal-lenge ew can master. Snce ths sessonso ar has been nothng but a gloroussuccess, we decded to steal a momentrom Head Organser Şeyma and Dep-uty Head Organsers, Melsa and Sonat,to ask them about the ther process –

challenges and vctores - n organsngthe 10th Natonal Selecton Conerenceo EYP urkey.

How long did it take for the three of  you to organise the session?Şeyma (Head Organser): Te Naton-al Commttee announced that we, asED Istanbul College, wll organse thesesson already n Aprl, but the organ-saton moved nto a very ntense ormat

n August.Melsa (Deputy Head Organser):  We started plannng serously n lateMay, so I beleve t has been ve to sxmonths.

What was the biggest challenge youhad to overcome before the session?Melsa: I’m gong to say: money, money, money. Te hardest part was dentely ndng sponsors.Sonat (Deputy Head Organser): Iound t qute dcult to nd a hotelor the partcpants at low prces, be-cause we really wanted or them to stay n a nce one. We searched almost every hotel n Istabul, then we ound Lmak.

Şeyma: Everyone seems ne wth thehotel we have now, so I beleve that wemade the good decson.

Now that the conference has started, what is the biggest problem you havefaced so far?

Şeyma: Dentely transportaton, butluckly we have managed t.Melsa: I would say there s too muchlove, t s very hard to keep people away rom each other.

What is the best thing that happened so far that has made you proud and happy?Şeyma: For me t s clear  – I am soproud o my Organsng team. For n-

stance, even though they are really tredand can’t stand stll n ear o allngasleep, they stll keep ther enthusasmand seem to be happy about what they are dong. Seeng that makes me soproud.Melsa: I am proud o everythng wehave done so ar, but the Ocals’ Dn-ner was the best.Sonat: I wll agree wth the Ocals’Dnner beng amazng, but I am surethat ths were ater the sesson, I

 would answer the boat trp.

If the three of you were a family whichrole would each one of you play?Şeyma: I would dentely be the moth-

er. Melsa sometmes acts lke a werdspoled grl who makes baby noses, butcan also act very maturely, so she wouldbe my daughter. Sonat would also beone o my chldren. He s oten morerelaxed than mysel, “Whatever, we wlldo that some other tme” s one o hs

common phrases. Ten ‘bam!’, we havea week to go, and everythng s doneand planned. He s great at ndng so-lutons and managng the crss stua-tons.Melsa: I would probably say the same– Sonat and I would be sblngs andŞeyma would be the mother.Sonat: We are practcally already a am-ly. But I beleve Melsa would be themother, a very strct one because even

though she mght not seem very stern, she can be qute esty. It would prob-ably lke “I you do not do your home-

work, I wll kll you.” Şeyma would bemy bgger sster and I would be the lt-tle chld.

What is your message to the Del-egates, especially to the newcomers?Şeyma: I am sure that you wll love EYP,and please make sure to enjoy every sec-ond o the sesson.Melsa: Enjoy t, love t, be t!Sonat: I would lke to quote Furkanaşel, the Head Organser o my rstsesson, “Please, please, enjoy t!”

Two siblings, one session

In how many conerences could youmeet sblngs n an Ocals’ team? Notmany probably. Durng hs speech nthe Openng Ceremony, Furkan a-sel, as a representatve o EYP urkey’sNatonal Commttee, mentoned how proud he s o hs “lttle baby ss’”, re-errng to Head Organser Şeyma a-sel. Snce the couple s so charmng, I

decded to st down wth the two or alttle sharng, maybe even a couple o secrets, about ther relatonshp.

When asked about hs sster, Furkanstarts by expressng how amazed he so Seyma’s success. When I mentonthat Seyma mght be ollowng n hsootsteps, he answers that she dentely s not, because she s way too matureto do so. At Şeyma’s rst EYP sesson, the 6th NSC o EYP urkey, Furkan

was a Head Organser, and the act thatŞeyma s now a Head Organser hersel makes Furkan very proud. He explansthat they never mx up ther sblng re-latonshp wth ther proessonal one.

o descrbe ther relatonshp, Şeymaremnsces about ther chldhood. Shedescrbes how they used to get along lkecats and dogs and lterally never gave upghtng, but he stll managed to teachher a vast amount about Gameboysand computers. Şeyma explans that, asthey grew older, ther relatonshp de-veloped nto somethng completely d-erent, and today they share everythng

wth one another. Even thngs that are

not usually meant to be shared wtha brother. When descrbng how shestarted EYP, Şeyma reveals that at thetme when she stll was not nvolved nEYP she used to see Furkan spendngsleepless nghts workng hard to organ-se sessons. She says her reason to startEYP was “I wondered what made my older brother work at nghts nstead o

sleepng, and I wanted to dscover thatmysterous thng mysel.” Şeyma wasmpressed by the way EYP changedFurkan. When descrbng Furkan, shesays he s more o a thnker, rather thana talkatve person, a characterstc thatshe admres. She admres how Furkanrestrans rom pontng out solutons, but preers leadng the way.

alkng to Seyma and Furkan aboutther relatonshp as sblngs taught me

a lot. I have to admt that I was amazedby the love and the respect they sharebetween each other. It shone rom theraces.

Five facts about Seyma:

She missprinted Furkan’s badge threetimes because o the tag ‘President’.Furkan thinks it happened because o his nickname, Furkan the President.

She never eats by hersel, which is oneo many things Furkan mocks her or.

Te thing she hates the most about Fur-kan is his low-waist trousers.

She owns a pink hair tie, which she isso obsessed with that she nearly cried

 when it was broken.

She always alls asleep on a couch wat-ching V and gets angry when a amily member suggests or her to go sleep inher own bed.

Five facts about Furkan:

He once answered the question “Doyou own a pet?” by writing “Yes, I haveŞeyma at home.”

He hates shopping so much that Şey-ma always has to drag him along to themall.

He eats an insane amount but neverdoes exercises.

He hates to have his hair cut.

He’s so naive that he believes his ope-ning speech at Şeyma’s irst session wasthe reason why she got more involved.

were very well able to understand theprocess o nsulaton.

Te Openng Ceremony contnuedby havng Mrs. Dr. Eng. ton concernng the lack o renewableenergy centrals n urkey.

Movng back to the EYP, the VcePresdent and board member o EYP

urkey, Mr. Furkan asel took the po-dum. Furkan ponted out how happy t makes hm to see the nternatonal

I you are a mddle class youth n yourlate teens or twentes, nto alternatvende-rock and ndependent lms,  you lke poetry bloggng, undergroundDJ-ng or playng the synth, but have aseemngly hard tme ndng an actual

Dressng lke a hpster s an art n t-sel. Rolled-up jeans, checkered shrtsor deeply cut tank tops wth quotesrom lms or novels no one has everheard o orm your bascs. A scrufy cardgan that once belonged to your

Carry your thngsn an of whte tote bag wth a prnt o your avourte nde band or a deep say-ng you came up wth yoursel. All thesegarments should ollow or rather dullcolour scale. However, the outt can be

spced up by an oversze watch n neonorange, and o course the oblgatory ray-ban wayarers. Alternatvely, youcan wear Kanye’s shades. A moustaches voluntary, but dentely helps. “Everythng about them s exactngly constructed to gve of the vbe thatthey just don’t care”, IMES wrote n2009. And that s the very core o hp-stersm - n your desperate quest to beas ndvdual as possble you all rghtnto manstream. Pretty ronc, thus the

Poll: Turkey in the EU?

7

When we asked the Delegates o thssesson on ther opnon o a possble

accesson o urkey nto the EuropeanUnon, t mmedately sparked a dscus-son about the general perspectve onEurope wthn urkey. Havng a longand unstable hstory n the relatonshp

wth the EU, the opnon on the topcs changng wthn urkey tsel.

It s ar to state that wth only assump-tons, no one would reach a realstcand proper outcome. From the begn-nng o manknd’s exstence, peoplethought and acted wthout seeng theacts. In order to nd the opnons o ths sesson’s Delegates on the mattero urkey and the EU, we conducted apoll askng, “Should urkey become a

member o the European Unon?”

Tanks to the sesson partcpants whotook the survey, the results are clearly statng an opnon. A majorty o Dele-gates, or 63.2% to be specc, answeredthat they would not support an acces-son o urkey nto the EU.

Te survey also shows that the partc-pants’ opnons dfer accordng to age.For example, the average age o Dele-gates dsapprovng o urkey’s accessonnto the EU s 16.8, whle the ones who

want urkey n the EU have an averageage o 15.2. One o the reasons or thss that, n the process o growng up,one gets more aware o current ssuesand learns to better understand what s

gong on around onesel. Ts can beseen n the dagramme. Speccally ater reezng the demandsdurng the negotatons between urkey and the EU, urksh poltcans decdedto slow down the process o accesson.

Ts also resulted n a decrease n theEU’s popularty among urksh peopleand thus also the sesson partcpants,

whch may also have afected results o ths survey.

Not beng a member o the EU doesnot mean that urkey s not a Europeancountry, just lke Swtzerland. Althoughthere are two opposng vews about en-terng the EU, other ways o contrbut-

ng to the European communty couldbe consdered.

Te end s near  – the end o the drty

and prehstorc way o ganng energy.Te uture s brght and clean. Te u-ture o energy s ocused on usng un-used opportuntes and ganng romthem as much as possble. Te uturencludes no usng o technologes that

were dscovered years ago that have noplace n ths world anymore and arecontnuously destructng our delcate

 world.

For ths, let us ocus on the truly renew-able energy sources and just skp thetradtonal ‘renewable resources’ such as

wndmlls or water power plants. Hereare some nnovatve energy sources youmght not have heard o beore:

Air s today responsble or 2.5 per cento the world’s electrcty. Ar s not only essental to our survval, but t s also agreat playground or objects wth a bad

aerodynamc coecent. Just magne:huge ktes, connected n pars wthropes, whch create a ground-mount-ed generator produce electrcty by tsmovement. I that s not energy, then

 what s?

Agricultural leftovers, such as vegeta-ble ol runnng n desel cars and etha-

nol powerng Koengsegg’s hyper-cars, s a great source o energy

that s renewable, afordableand accessble all around the

 world.

Geothermal advantage: Drllngtwo wells n the Earth, njectng water

nto the rst one and lettng hot steam

spn the turbne n the other well s yetanother genus, clean and ecent way o producng electrcty. Unortunately however, t s dentely not accessbleeverywhere.

Te moon s responsble or tdes, huge movements o water masses n theocean. Why not use ther velocty andmass to power our energy-spttng tur-bnes?

Fnally a personal avorte – the sun.Unless you are above the Arctc Crcle, you see the sun at least once a day. It sbrght, blndng and powerul. Lkely,at least once a day you see an unusedarea where the sun dentely shnes. By combnng these two actors you cangan a large amount o energy. Imagnethose shny blue panels on buldngs. Ordo not. Te process o developng solar

energy has today gone so ar that solarpanels can be see-through and dscrete. You can use them as wndows whereverthere s sun, and where no wndows ex-st, n deserts, you can have huge solarthermal plants. In the personal bele o many people, solar energy s the energy o the uture.

What s presented above s just a smallsample on the endless menu o energy makng. By the tme you wll be read-ng ths, there wll be countless new nnovatons n the eld o renewableenergy sources. Te process s unstop-pable, and ths s a act that we shouldbe thankul or.

ravellng mght be descrbed as excte-ment, joy or even happness; howeverths s ar rom true. Carryng heavy luggage, endless queues and the tch-ng pan caused by sttng down or toolong are hardly experences whch one

Te charm wth EYP s that the traveltsel s not the goal o the trp, butrather the people you wll meet at the

nal destnaton and on the way there.Meetng people, sharng experencesand ganng memores are vtal ele-ments o travels, and also o le. Tetrp tsel s just a way to get there.Crystal-clear beaches, lush orests andthe grand Alps; these are places whchappeal to one’s mnd. However, mag-nng the prospect o standng n thesedestnatons all alone s not as exctng.Ts s due to what could be descrbedas the greatest part o le; the part de-scrbed as nteracton and, preerably, rendshp. An nterestng, new and

Health vs. civil liberties

11

Health awareness n the cgarette para-dgm has rsen dramatcally n the lastew years; smokers are beng bannedrom, and escorted out o, varous acl-tes due to laws and restrctons created

n the pursut o creatng a smoke-reesurroundngs. Ts new phenomenons easly notceable ater a walk throughany European cty; no-smokng sgnsare vsble on almost every corner andpublc ashtrays are almost as rare as y-ng pgs.

Tese questons have unearthed a vtalqueston – at whch pont does publchealth become a threat to cvl lbertes?

One mght ask why anyone would evenconsder cvl lbertes when t comes tosmokng restrcton ssues, but 17% o the world populaton are ncotne ad-dcts wth cvl rghts and responsbl-tes, just lke any non-smoker. Smokng

s unquestonably a bad habt, but t sstll a habt that s not orbdden by any consttuton; t s thereore legal andmust be respected by the law. It s oneo the very ew legal addctons next to

alcohol, cofee, chocolate etc.

It s wthout a doubt that smokers canlmt and tyrannse non-smokers by ds-respectng ther personal preerence orclean ar, but a non-smoker can also dothe same to smokers by restrctng themrom one o ther personal preerences. It s a act that lmted exposure to pas-sve smokng wll not result n crtcalhealth condtons, even though t canbe ound unpleasant. In the long term,

however, passve smokng s more lkely to be the cause o some knd o healthdamage, so there s no doubt that ant-smoke awareness campagns ulll apurpose. However, ths does not justy the general lack o respect towards nco-

tne junkes, ree markets, cvl lbertesand personal property. Te ant-smok-ng dogma should not have the powerto volate democratc and human prn-cples and rghts, such as lmtng nd-vduals, busness owners, corporatonsor governments rom reedom o move-ment.

Law s, among other thngs, here to en-

sure that the reedom o one ndvduals not volated by another ndvdual.Tus, t s very contradctory that, by protectng one group o ndvduals, another group s turned nto outlaws, rejects and potental assassns.

o conclude, a touch o common senseand mutual respect s needed n thsclash o two partes, where each sdeeels oppressed by the other and at thesame tme s aware o beng the oppres-

sor o the other sde.

On August 30th2008 over 85 mllon vewers tuned nto watch the nale o the seemngly ‘aled’ soap n the Arab world alone.Ts leadng the MBC (Mddle EastBroadcastng Centre) to clam that thesoap, among others o ts type, had gen-erated a “meda revoluton”.

Ts ‘revoluton’ comes rom some-thng that can only be descrbed as the‘urksh touch’. Every urksh seres smbedded wth urksh culture, valuesand dentty, allowng oregn vewers

to see and experence a sde o urkey that they had never beore been ntro-

duced to. Tese soaps, whch are heav-ly crtcsed by most urks, have playeda key part n the growng nterest orsoap operas n the country. Gümüşalone has been credted or sparkng atourst boom to urkey, whch n May 2010 drew 105,000 vstors rom Arabcountres; nearly a 33% ncrease on thesame month n 2009.

Not only are the soaps generatng -nancal benets or the country romboth busnesses and toursts alke, they are also sparkng an ncreased nterest nurksh culture. Ts, n turn, accordngto leadng academcs, s attractng moreand more people to the study o urksh

lterature. Aşk-ı Memnu s based on thenamous novel by Halt Zya Uşaklıgl;the only dference between the twovaratons beng the perod n whchthey are set. Yaprak Dökümü s also anadaptaton o a book wrtten n 1939by the acclamed author and dramatstReşat Nur Güntekn. Proessor NhatÖztoprak o Marmara Unversty has

even commented that “wth the rs-ng awareness n urksh lterature, theneghbourng countres have realsedthat urkey s not a ‘desert country’.

Te urksh soap opera s a way or therest o the world to become amlar

wth the mysterous country on twocontnents rom the comort o therown home. Whereas documentaresabout modern day urkey and urkscan be consdered tedous and repet-

tve, the soaps provde a captvatngstory lne and keep ther audences n-terested - whle at the same tme, edu-catng them n the urksh way o le.

While watching soap operas everyday may seem like a

waste of time in the eyes of most, the positive attention pro-

grammes like Gümüs, Ask-ı Memnu and Yaprak Dökümü

are bringing to Turkey cannot be underestimated.
