The Internal Sealing System for Accessible Pipes

As long as mankind started to buildpipe systems, as long there havebeen leaks. These leaks are causedby defective joints or disturbances inthe pipe wall. These leaks are causedby environmental influences like landsli-des, earthquakes, ground-water level, aggressive liquids and, a major factor,by heavy above ground traffic load.

Approximately 60 years ago the firsttests have been made with rubberprofiles to mechanically seal leakingjoints from the inside.

Beginning of the seventies the AMEX®–10 Seal was introduced to the market–designed for the various require-ments to seal a pipe system – andsince then continually adjusted andfurther developed to meet the latestrequirements.

At that time they where used to sealjoints made of cast iron in the water-and gas industry. Nowadays theAMEX®–10 MONO Seal is applied topipe materials like prestressed con-crete, concrete made in place, steel,PVC, PE, AC, GLP, cement mortarlined pipes or as end seals for liners.

Use of common resourcesAMEX GmbH is a company of theMEYER & JOHN Group. All resourcesof the group like R&D center, designoffice, yard and workshops on onehand and the 50 years contractingexperience in the gas, water andsewer industry on the other hand areat the disposal of the AMEX team.

In all areas of the general industry,supply- and disposal industry and powerstation industry the AMEX®–10 InternalSealing System has proved its per-manent reliability since over 30 years.

Effectiveness of the AMEX®-10 Internal Sealing SystemThe applied AMEX®–10 profiles areproduced in an endless version andare joint together to any required sizeby a special production method.

The outstanding physical characteris-tics and resistance together with thespecial shape of the AMEX®–10 profileswith its three fold seal between themain seal, ensure a permanent sealin the pipe.

The special elastic quality of variousrubber types with the ability to bridgeaxial and radial displacements withoutinfluencing the sealing properties isthe basis for a permanent sealingfunction.

The sealing function of the AMEX®–10Internal Sealing System is exclusivelyreached by radial tension via theretaining bands, which are manually

installed without the use of a roboteror adhesives.

The AMEX®–10 Mono Seal is not just aseal for rehabilitation but has thequality and feature of a pipe seal fornew pipe systems.

Man accessible pipes The AMEX®-10 MONO Seal is suitableto seal pipe joints and leaks in dia-meters from 500/600 to 5.800 mm andlarger as well as containers made ofsteel, cast iron, reinforced concrete, concrete made in place, PVC, AC,GLP and PE.

Non – accessible pipes In the diameters 250 – 500 mm theAMEX®-10 MONO Seal is used to seal

Area of application of the AMEX®-10 MONO Seal

EPDM rubber seal

SS retaining bands

MDPE backing band joint connections at branches inaccessible pipes or as an end seal forliners.

Pressure rating In general the AMEX®-10 MONO Sealis designed for an internal pressurerating of 20 bar.

If higher pressure is involved theAMEX®-10 MONO Seal can be reinforcedwith fabric.

AMEX®-10 MONO Seal works safe ininfiltration situations by involving staticsupport.

Installation of the AMEX®-10 MONO Seal

CleaningIn the installation area all pollution hasto be removed mechanically in such away that a clean and smooth surfaceexists. In case of depressions of thepipe wall a suitable material, accordingto the liquid, has to be applied to reacha smooth surface for the AMEX®-10Internal Sealing System. Increases inthe pipe wall have to be equalised bysuitable mechanical methods. Veryrough surfaces have to be treated witha coating.

Access and set upThe AMEX®-10 MONO Seal is put in thepipe and is transported together withthe retaining bands to the place ofinstallation. The seal is placed exactlyonto the clean and smooth pipe surfaceand is adjusted.

The set up of the seal follows by meansof the two retaining bands.

Pre-pressureAfter the hydraulic expander has beenfitted to the retaining bands a slightpress on follows.

The correct fitting of the seal and theretaining bands has to be controlled.

Installation of the safety spindle forbracing between pipe wall and pressfollows.

By slow activation of the hydraulicpump and hammering simultaneouslyonto the retaining bands the pressureis slowly increased until the pressuregauge does not show a loss of pressu-re.

A suitable wedge is placed.After-pressingIn order to guarantee an optimalinstallation of the AMEX®-10 MONOSeal it is necessary, depending on thepipe material, to after-pressure theseal once.

Quality checkThe perfect fit and tightness of theAMEX®-10 MONO Seal can be tested byputting pressure through a super flattest valve to the seal.

After having inflated the seal a leakdetecting spray is applied to the endwall of the seal in order to detect escaping air.

With extremely leaking joints temporarysealing of the joint is required.

Sealing with the AMEX®-10 VARIO Seal

6

The AMEX®-10 VARIO Seal bases onthe principle of the AMEX®-10 MONOSeal. Numberless VARIO Seals canbe connected to an endless unit bychoice. Each AMEX®-10 VARIO Seal isgeared and secured to the next seal, this avoiding a replacement and sliding.

The VARIO System always starts orends with an AMEX®-10 MONO Sealin the width between 260 – 500 mm. It is possible to combine all compo-nents of the AMEX®-10 Internal SealingSystem, such reaching a high flexibilityduring installation.

In operation• Installation in diameters not suitable

for liner systems• Installation as a short liner system

to protect variable wide leaks or joints

• Corrosion protection of complete pipe systems against aggressive liquids

Advantages• By variable shaping any installation

length can be realised• Installation even if condition on site

changes unexpectedly• Absolute sealing caused by gearing

compared to other sealing methods• Flexible and fast installation due

to combination with the standardsystem

Damage of the Pipe The pressure pipe, material pre-stressed concrete, has two clear cutdamages:

• leaking joints• leaking stoppers caused

by test drills.

Rehabilitation by liner was not pos-sible because of access and length ofpipe. The total length of the pipe wasrehabilitated after survey and sealingof test drills by the AMEX®-10 VARIOSystem.

Partial sealing with AMEX®-10 VARIOSystem

Application of the AMEX®–10 VARIOSystem in the area of partial sealingoffers cost saving. This system justseals the areas you want to be sealedsuch making a complete renovationof a whole pipe length unnecessary.
