La Porte ISD’s communications department has been honored with several awards by the Texas School Public Relations Association, including a Gold Star Award and a Crystal Commendation for the 2016 100th Anniversary Celebration. The Gold Star is, in essence, a first-place award. Crystal Commendations are awarded by a panel of judges for being among the best of the best across the state. Director of Communications Terri Cook, who chaired the 100th Anniversary Celebration committee, accepted the award at TSPRA’s Star Awards Banquet on Feb. 21 on behalf of several others, she said. “This honor really belongs to the dozens of people who worked tirelessly on the campaign,” Cook said. “It was such a wonderful event, and we couldn’t have pulled it off without the hundreds … maybe thousands of volunteer hours that went into it.” La Porte ISD’s 100th Anniversary Celebration included a series of events throughout the district that culminated with a block party at Bulldog Stadium. Olympic gold medalist and La Porte High School alum Kerron Clement was among the VIP participants. The district also received TSPRA’s 2018 Bright Idea Award for its partnership with 2017 La Porte High School graduate Chase Cichorz, who has been blind since birth, on making the district website more accessible to people with disabilities. Judges were impressed with the uniqueness and adaptability of the project and requested that it be presented at a future statewide conference of public school administrators. Webmaster Adam J. Holland accepted the award.
