“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in
your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am
sure, dwells in you as well.” 2 Timothy 1:5 ESV
May has been a reminder for me about the importance of teaching our faith to our children. On May 16, we celebrated the pre-k children at Central Child Care who are preparing to begin kindergarten. It was wonderful to see all those children singing, dancing, praying, and entering the world of elementary school. The times that they spent in chapel with Cynthia Jones and me and the Christian moments in their classrooms are part of their early faith journeys. Hopefully, we have helped them grow a little closer to God.
On the other side, we recognized those who are graduating from high school and various levels of postsecondary education. They have learned much since entering elementary school. They have had more opportunities to grow in their faith, and we have had more opportunities to speak the Good News of Jesus Christ into their lives since we first encountered them.
There are few things more important than sharing our faith, especially with children. And children need role models who can authentically live out their faith and show them how their faith and life intersected. We are responsible for being those role models.
We have children who come to our child care every day, and we are continuing to explore ways that we can support them. There are ways you can be involved, whether it is reading a story to them or helping the teachers prepare.
We also are preparing for Vacation Bible School July 23-27. We have already begun forming the team of teachers and assistants who will guide children throughout the week. But soon we will need donated items, willing hands to help decorate, and additional, caring adults who can support and chaperone the children throughout the week. If you would like to assist you can contact our Associate Director of Children’s Ministry Julie Reed right now at [email protected].
We also need people who are a willing to help children in Sunday school and children’s church learn more about God’s love. The lessons are prepared ahead of time and designed for you to easily pick them up and teach them. There are also opportunities you might be able to setup for lessons. You can contact Julie to sign up to help this summer.
We have awesome youth who meet every Sunday and Wednesday evening. There are opportunities for you to spend some time just hanging with the youth, and there are opportunities for you to get involved in mentoring or teaching. The two meeting times also need meals and snacks.
The most important way you can get involved is through prayer. Please, pray for the children, youth, families, and workers in our youth and children’s ministries. We need godly people who desire to help them discover God in meaningful ways. Pray that we are preparing them to grow deeper in their faith throughout their lives and that we are helping them meet God. Pray also for how God is inviting you to join in the lives of our young people this summer.

Thank you to the members of Central United Methodist Church for your continued dedication to child care and the families enrolled here! The pre-k children were so excited about their backpacks and school supplies. The parents were also grateful to have a jump start on preparations for kindergarten.
I would also like to recognize the Mission Team for their recent work with our staff and families. Several members hosted lunch for our staff during Staff Appreciation Week. We also had a group pass out bulletins and serve cookies and lemonade to the families who attended graduation.
We appreciate and recognize the church members who meet with the Directors monthly and govern the child care: Brandon Willis, management team president; Ryan Lynch, financials; Kim White, human resource; Bob Dillow, advisor; Susan Herring, advisor; and Pastor Kevin.
Summer camp begins May 29! We will have 26 campers this summer for our five 2-week sessions. Ms. Sara Farrar-Haas has planned many fun activities for the children. She will be working with Ms. Holly, who is returning for another year, and Mr. Dylan. Both Ms. Sara and Mr. Dylan are child care staff members. I am certain the children will have a fun, eventful summer!
