Light for the Way

MESSENGER

“Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life…”

[Isaiah 55:2-3a NLT]

Isaiah 55:7 goes on to tell us, “Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.” The only place we can find “real food,” real satisfaction and fulfillment, the only place we can find real life is in God and a relationship with God through His Son, Je-sus Christ. This passage from Isaiah was originally addressed to the people of Israel in exile in Babylon. They had ended up there because as a nation they had forsook their covenant with God by chasing after other so called gods seek-ing to satisfy their every whim rather than seeking an ongoing relationship with God who had created them, delivered them from slavery in Egypt and given to them the Promised Land. If anyone is looking for peace, joy and satisfaction in life, we must start and end with pursuing our rela-tionship with God. In that relationship God will guide us into all that we need to receive His love and then share that love with others. It is in being loved by God and allowing Him to love others through us that we will find life that is truly life. As Jesus said, let us seek first His kingdom and righteousness.

Pastor Pat

worked about seventy hours each week, and ma-chines did about six per-cent of the work. Today he works forty hours or less, and machines do eighty-five percent of the work. But, obviously, that hasn't solved the problem. It has-n't given any more meaning or significance to his task. For most, it is still drudg-ery. Our problem as we have said, is to have mean-ing, a significance in life, in whatever system we live, in whatever tasks we are engaged. Even the pagan philosopher, Aristotle, 2,000 years ago said that happiness comes from some productive act, a working in the way of ex-cellence. He was keen enough to see that not even in his primitive and what we would term barbarian, civilization, our happiest moments are not those in which we ask ourselves to be happy, but rather those in which we lose ourselves in some creative task that seems important. We be-come so engrossed in that that we forget to take our own emotional pulse. Peo-ple who have not found joy in productivity must con-stantly be striving for some pleasure in life, be it play or alcohol, sex or some other sensuous experience, and thus, ironically and paradoxically, the pleasure becomes the index of their unhappiness. Watch a per-son who is always looking for some kind of pleasure or recreation, and you are looking at a person who is unhappy. (His Hands, Jon L. Joyce, CSS Publishing Co., Inc., 1977)

I have been reviewing faith sharing material from the Billy Graham School of Evangelism used to prepare communities for doing fol-low-up after one of their evangelistic crusades as I look forward to the Frank-lin Graham Festival that will held in Erie in Septem-ber, 2014. It is time tested material about how to grow in your own faith even as you disciple a new believer and help them to grow in their faith. Part of the re-sources includes a video clip from the 60 Minutes Nov. 6, 2005 interview with Tom Brady, superstar quarterback for the NFL’s New England Patriots. The interview took place not long after Brady had helped lead his team to three Super Bowl victories. Brady had even been named MVP for one of those world champion-ships. In the interview Brady wonders out loud, “Why do I have three Su-per Bowl rings and still think there’s something out there greater for me?” Tom Brady was living out what God had warned the people of Israel about over 2,500 years ago. Brady was enjoying the best this world had to offer, yet it was not satisfying. He was settling for food that was not really food, drink that was not really drink. He was looking for something from the world which can only be found through a relationship with God and His Son, Jesus Christ. A hundred years ago the average factory worker

From the Hart

……..Youth Newsletter The youth group started the month off in preparation for this summer’s mission trip to Wintersville, Ohio. The tools were cleaned and packed, emergency forms were filled out, and the weekly schedule was discussed. Each youth also shared why they were going on this trip, along with what, if any, fears they may have. Members of last year’s group shared their experiences, as well, and made suggestions for a successful trip this year. Week two brought us all together on a Sunday night to compete with each other through various board games. Eventually it came down to who could eat the most pizza and who could win more cards playing apples to apples. The evening brought a special time of fellowship as the more senior members of the group started to talk about past youth group memories. Our third week brought back a youth favorite this year; the small group discussion. This month we were led by Gabriel as he focused on what teens think we need versus what we really need. Our youth were challenged to share their favorite luxury and how hard it would be to give it up. The final week brought back our annual scavenger hunt around Erie. The group is split into teams with adult drivers and each group is asked to find a list of items while using the least amount of miles. Upon return to the church teams are checked for accuracy of the items and total mileage used. As an example, some of the items that groups had to find included; McDonald’s straws, Tom Ridge Center brochures, or a gift bag from the Mall. Other items are photos taken on a cell phone of group members performing certain challenges across the city. Examples of this include shaking the hand of a fast food employee, posing in front of the zoo, or dancing on the beach. It was another great year of laughs and let’s just say some very creative ways to accomplish the given tasks. Our summer missionaries, whom are eagerly willing to spread the love of Christ and Glenwood UMC to the people of Wintersville, Ohio (July 21-27) are still at work. We are proud to go forward in the names of all who are unable to join us on this mission, as we spread the joy of service to those in need. The village of Wintersville is a small place full of great people. The village is actually one big neighborhood! Our impact will be huge here as work campers will be able to serve the whole village. Wintersville is an old steel town that has lost its mills. Many people lost their pensions and now live at or below the poverty level. Unemployment is high. Elderly residents and single moms who can't afford to get their house painted or steps fixed really need our help. The Wintersville community is so overwhelmed with the idea of anyone giving back to them that they are hosting a barbeque, carnival, and concert for campers. Our presence will impact this close-knit community with God's love and hope.

Thank you all for your prayers, cards, flowers, and visits during the recent passing of my husband. The luncheon provided was such a big help for our family. Joan Bindeman I just wanted to say thank you for the care package from church. It is nice knowing that people at home are thinking about me. Thank you to every-one who contributed items. Sarah Deemer LOCAL MISSION Now I lay me down to sleep…As a child I would recite this simple prayer each night as I snuggled in my own bed. Today, I think about the child who utters this prayer while sleeping in our emergency or transi-tional shelter for home-less families. They are thankful for the bed they have tonight, but there is uncertainty and fear about where they will be tomorrow. This is a real-ity for over 20 children who stay with their fami-lies at our shelters each day. They are safely sheltered and cared for because of you. Thank you for helping to pro-vide for their essential needs. Your gift of $1,500 will help give our hard working staff an in-crease in their paychecks

“We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers.”

With Gratitude this year. Thank you for your support and partner-ship in our mission to help those in need – one heart at a time. Cheryl Davis EUMA WORLD MISSION Hello from Khabarovsk! It's been a long time since I've caught you all up on the latest and greatest in the Khabarovsk Ministry so let's just jump right in. In the last several months there have been big chang-es in the laws regarding US families adopting from Russia. The new law prohibits Americans from adopting from Russia. It is a very sad decision based on a number of factors, some with merit and others that are ridiculous. The sad thing is that it places many families who were in the process of adopting in major limbo. Over the years we have seen many families adopt children from Khabarovsk orphan-ages and the process in normal circumstances is not for the faint of heart. The uncertainty now for those families is beyond normal circum-stances. Please pray for them and the children they already consider their own. I continue to teach English as we go into our last se-mester of the year. This

year I have had 2 first grade groups, 2 second grade groups and a fourth grade group. I also have 5 individual students at school plus two I have lessons with at home. It has been a busy teaching year for me. I really enjoy the young kids a lot. I am so thankful that the Lord has given me the opportunity to share my life and time at school. Last spring I wrote in an update about a young graduate from the Orphanage whose baby died in an accident in their home. Gallia, the young mother just had another baby. Please pray for Gallia and her new baby that the Lord will protect them and keep them safe. I will be coming to the states this summer to visit supporting Church-es. I will be there from June 6th- August 8th. I would love to see you all! Thanks again for your faithfulness in support-ing and praying for this ministry! Without you none of this would be possible. Please know how grateful I am for you! Sue Fuller Khabarovsk, Russia The Mission Society

Follow the Footsteps to the Spring Fling

The United Methodist Women (UMW)

have scheduled a Rummage Sale for

Friday, October 4 and Saturday,

October 5. We will gratefully accept

your donations of gently used items

during the months of May, June, July,

and August. Donations may be placed

in the coat room area in the lower lob-

by, near the rest rooms.

We cannot accept large pieces of furni-

ture, exercise equipment and electron-

ics (TVs, computers, etc.). The Rum-

mage Sale proceeds benefit mission

programs of the UMW.

United Methodist Women

We are excited about an alternative

giving opportunity for Mother’s Day.

The Mother’s Day campaign is an

opportunity to honor mothers or other

women who have nurtured them. As

you know, Imagine No Malaria is an

extraordinary effort by The United

Methodist Church to reduce preventa-

ble malaria deaths in Africa. When the

campaign started in 2010, a child died

every 30 seconds from this mosquito-

transmitted disease. Now deaths have

been cut in half, and a person dies eve-

ry 60 seconds from malaria. Mothers

and children are the most vulnerable.

Young children have not yet devel-

oped partial immunity to malaria.

Pregnant women, whose immunity

is decreased by pregnancy, espe-

cially during the first and second

pregnancies, are also at risk.

Our gifts to Imagine No Malaria will

help the mothers in Africa who strug-

gle each day to protect their children

from malaria.

Want to donate? Here’s how!

Text MOM to 27722 and select a

donation level of $10, $25, $40,

$75, or $100.

Mail donations to UMC-Imagine

No Malaria, Mother’s Day, P.O.

Box 440544, Nashville, TN 37244.

Imagine No Malaria on Mother’s Day

It’s time for the annual UMW Spring

Fling! This year it will be held on

Saturday, May 18 at 6:00 p.m. Dinner

will include lasagna, salad, bread, fruit,

entertainment, and more. Tickets are

$10 for adults, $5 for kids under 10,

and free for those under 3 years of age.

We are asking for gently worn or new

shoes to use as decorations and then to

be passed on to the needy. Please put

them under the mailboxes across from

Pastor’s office. Also, a reminder to

the United Methodist Women Board:

there is a meeting on Wednesday

morning, May 22 at 9:30 a.m.
