Every Life is Worth Living – “Every human person-no
matter how vulnerable, or helpless, no matter how healthy, handicapped or sick, no matter how useful or
productive for society-is a being of inestimable worth cre-ated in the image and likeness of God.” Pope John Paul II,
The Gospel of Life. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: Persons with disabilities share their gifts and needs, they bring out
the best in our mutual humanity. They need to feel our solidarity with them, and to know their true dignity and
worth. Pray that we learn to be more fully human and
compassionate, to recognize the presence of God in each human being.

Vigil Readings: The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist: First Reading: The account of God calling Jeremiah to be a prophet is the first reading. God knew Jeremiah even
before he was in the womb. From the beginning of time
God consecrated him as a prophet. Jeremiah spoke chal-lenging words of repentance just as John the Baptist
would do. Both prophets faced suffering and persecu-tions at the hands of those who did not appreciate their
message. Yet both prophets were faithful in their mission and the Lord fulfilled his promise to always be with then.
Second Reading: The community the letter 1 Peter ad-
dressed faced persecution. The author intended the words
of this passage to encourage the people suffering because of their faith. He reminds them that the result of their
faith will be their souls’ salvation. This reading coincides with the Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist be-
cause it mentions the prophets who, in their proclamation of the Good News, served the people not themselves. The
prophets, of who John the Baptist holds a special place, faithfully announced salvation despite the persecution
they, too, endured.
Gospel: Luke’s story of the angel’s annunciation to Zecha-riah of the conception of his son, John the Baptist is the Gospel reading. Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth, were
faithful before God. At the time of the annunciation, Zechariah was serving as a priest and preparing the in-
cense offering. The Lord’s angel tells him the Holy Spirit
will fill the son he and his wife will have. So too, Elijah’s spirit and power will lead the way for him. His will be the
mission to make ready a people for the Lord. John the Baptist is the link between the Old Testament prophets
and Jesus. Day Readings: The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist First Reading: The Lord called Isaiah before he was in the womb. The Lord formed Isaiah in the womb. The Lord
gave him a challenging prophetic mission to offer hope to the Israelites in exile, a people who frequently needed the
prophet to call them back to the Lord. God gave John the
Baptist, like Isaiah, a prophetic role from the beginning. John was to proclaim the light that Jesus Christ would be
to the nations and that through him salvation would reach to the ends of the earth. Isaiah’s prophetic words that con-
clude the reading speak of his very promise.
Second Reading: The passage from Acts directly mentions John’s role in heralding the coming of Jesus, the Savior of
Davidic lineage. Luke describes how in John’s ministry,
especially near its end, the prophet would speak of his unworthiness to untie the Savior’s sandals.
Day Readings—continued
Gospel: Luke’s account of the Gospel is the only one that
includes a narrative of the birth of John the Baptist. The Lord’s angel had announced to Zechariah that Elizabeth
would give birth to a son and he was to name him “John”. After John’s birth, the time for his circumcision
came. A dispute ensued with the relatives over his name for they thought he should be named after his father.
Elizabeth stayed strong and his name is to be John even though none of the relatives had this name. Yet Zechari-
ah still needed to affirm Elizabeth’s words in writing
since he could no longer speak. Yet once Zechariah wrote John’s name, his speech returned. The Lord’s presence
was with the prophet and his family from the beginning.
BAPTISMAL PREPARATION CLASS will be offered on Saturday, July 7th in Xavier Hall from
9:00 am—10:00 am. Parents and godparents must attend
a class prior to baptism. If godparents do not reside in this area they should contact their parish for a similar
class. At least one god-parent must be Catholic in good standing. Another may be of a Christian faith but also
practicing his/her religion. If you would like to attend the class, please contact the parish office, 457-4556.
VOCATIONS CORNER—John the Baptist – what an amazing individual. His tireless proclaiming of the coming of the Messiah is inspiring. He definitely un-derstood his vocation in life – to prepare the way of the Lord. He gained notoriety for his zealous preaching and his lifestyle. We can take a lesson from John; he was not daunted by his detractors in continuing his mission here on earth. He has set a bold example of being a real believer. Can we be as bold each day in living out our Vocation?

Dear Saint Francis Xavier Parish Family,
Blessings are extended to all as we cele-
brate the Feast of the Baptism of Saint John the Baptist at our weekend Masses.
This Solemn Feast always takes precedent over the usual Sunday readings and prayers because of
its importance. We thank God for Saint John the Bap-tist who paved the way for his cousin and our Savior,
the Lord Jesus Christ!
We offer a special welcome to Fr. Jesu , a missionary
order priest who is here this weekend to speak at all of our Masses at Saint Francis Xavier and the Newman
Center as part of the Diocesan Mission Cooperative program held every two years.
This weekend I am at Saint John’s University and Ab-
bey in Collegeville, Minnesota to celebrate my 45th an-niversary as a priest along with my seminary class-mates. Fr. Jim Kunz, who some of you know from our
parish pilgrimage to Europe ten years ago, will be part of the reunion group. This week we received word that Father Jack Frerker, who served as Director at the Newman Catholic Stu-dent Center for fifteen years as well as interim pastor
here at Saint Francis Xavier for about a year, passed
away at the age of 80 in Olympia, Washington. Ar-rangements are incomplete, but likely he will be buried
here in the diocese with a service to be determined. We will keep you posted. May Father Jack rest in
peace!
Have a blessed week!
