PERSPECTIVES

Fire—good servant but badmaster

* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

Fires mainly break out in the dry season,so each and every person needs to be well awareof and prevent the danger of fire. Localauthorities concerned are to cooperate with thepeople in taking fire preventive measures.

A total of 89 fires broke out in the nationin January due to negligence, electric shortcircuit, arsons and forest fire. Most of the firesbroke out because of negligence.

The Fire Services Department isconducting a public campaign for fireprevention. It is also collaborating withdevelopment affairs committees in preventingfires at markets and high-rise buildings. Moreover, people are being informed aboutthe danger of fire and preventive measuresthrough media such as radio, TV, newspapersand journals. Fire prevention talks are alsobeing given in townships, wards and villages.

The department is carrying out fire drillsand door-to-door fire inspections. As authoritiesconcerned are taking nationwide fire preventivemeasures extensively to reduce fire breakouts, the people on their part are to follow andrespect rules and regulations.

Every one is duty-bound to take firepreventive measures. Townships, wards andvillages and markets are to build a 5000-gallonbrick tank each and always fill it with waterwithout fail. Every house and building is tohave fire extinguishers and equipment, waterbuckets and bags of sand. Fire check-points areto be set up systematically and the people needto cooperate with the fire brigade in firepreventive measures.

All cities, wards and villages will be ableto thwart the danger of fire only when they usefire carefully and systematically by takingmeasures such as putting out fire remnantsand mosquito coils when going to bed andavoiding the use of plastic containers in fillingpetrol in the hot, dry season.

LOS ANGELES, 14 Feb — Due to anestimated 640- million-dollar deficit, sixschool days will be cut off from theschool year in Los Angeles, it was re-ported on Saturday.

The move, proposed by Los Angelesschools Supt. Ramon C. Cortines, wasdesigned to avoid the need for wide-spread layoffs in the nation’s second-larg-est school system, according to the LosAngeles Times. Cortines said the movewould save the district 90 million dol-lars and could spare up to 5,000 jobs.

The alternative to this drastic action,he said, would be to let the district gobankrupt. “Do I think (this) is good edu-

cation policy? No,” he said. “ But we are ina real crisis.” Cortines has repeatedly saidthat he did not want to shorten the schoolyear. This is the first time in recent historythat a Los Angeles school superintendent hasmade such a suggestion.

Five of the affected days would be class-room days and the sixth would be anoninstructional day, according to the report.

Union leaders would have to agree to themove. Nonunion employees, including sen-ior district staff, have been ordered to takefour furlough days by May, and Cortinescriticized groups that have not been will-ing to make concessions, said the paper.

Rare white jackdaw inUkraine spurned by flock

In a story that could have comestraight out of Aesop’s Fables, a rare whitejackdaw in eastern Ukraine has beenspurned by its flock.

The albino bird, called Katya, was spot-ted by Lutsk resident AlexanderMoiseyenko, who tosses her scraps of breadfrom his apartment window.

“She flies together with other jackdaws, but stays apart. The black jackdaws usuallysteal the food and fly away,” Moiseyenkosaid. Ornithologists say there have been only15 confirmed sightings of white jackdawsin the world over the past three decades. And this is the first time that one has beenseen in Ukraine.

“There is a certain set of genes that leadsto albinism,” said Mikhail Khimin, an or-nithologist and conservationist in the Volynregional government. “These kinds of birdsare a result of degeneration and gene muta-tion.” Katya’s plight bears shades of Aesop’stale about the envious jackdaw that paintedhimself white to fit in with the well-fedfarmyard pigeons. As soon as the decep-tion was exposed, he was chased away, butthen shunned by his fellow jackdaws, who no longer recognized the bird as oneof their own. A snowboarder sails through the Ol-

Lack of sleep increasesdisease risk

BOSTON, 14 Feb — If people usually wake upgroggy and grumpy, they’re probably not gettingenough sleep and increasing their risk of disease, aUS report says.

For some people, late-night TV watching or Websurfing is to blame, but for many others, the culprit isinsomnia or sleep apnea, a condition in which the air-way closes and breathing stops or becomes shallowerhundreds of times each night.“Sleep apnea can alsowreak havoc on the cardiovascular system, becausethe heart must work harder every time the brain sendsout a ‘wake up and breathe’ signal,” the report said.

Homeless Haiti quake victims gettarps, want tents

PORT-AU-PRINCE, 14 Feb—Ask any of the hundredsof thousands of earthquake victims living outdoors inHaiti’s shattered capital and you’re apt to get the sameplea: “Give us a tent.”

Few will get one. Aid agencies and Haitian offi-cials have given up plans to shelter the homeless intents, even if that means many will likely face hurri-cane season camped out under flapping sheets of plas-tic. Tents are too big, too costly and too inefficient, aid groups say. So Haitians must swelter under flimsytarps until fixed shelters can be built — though noone believes nearly enough can be will be up in timefor spring storms.

“A tent would give us more space. There are toomany people in here,” said Marie-Mona Destiron, sweating under the hot blue light of her family’s do-nated plastic tarp. When it rains, she said, water slidesthrough the gaps and turns the dirt floor to mud.

Destiron, 45, got her tarp from US soldiers withthe 82nd Airborne Division. Her husband, JoselinEdouard, tied it to a thin mahogany tree on a dustyslope below the country club that the soldiers use as aforward-operating base. It is home to them and theirsix children.

DAVIS, 14 Feb— Researchers at the University ofCalifornia, Davis, said beer may help prevent oste-oporosis — the loss of bone density that can result infractures.

Lead author Charles Bamforth says the study sug-gests that beer is a significant source of dietary sili-con, a key ingredient for increasing bone mineral den-sity.

Bamforth and colleagues studied commercial beerproduction to determine the relationship between beerproduction methods and the resulting silicon content.

Silicon is present in beer in the soluble form oforthosilicic acid, which yields 50 percentbioavailability, making beer a major contributor to sili-con intake in the Western diet.—Internet

Drug halts tumour growth in miceSAN DIEGO, 14 Feb—

Scientists in Californiasay they’ve developed adrug that stops the growthof kidney and pancreatictumors in mice.

The drug binds to amolecular “switch” foundin cancer cells to keep itin the “off position,” re-searchers at the Universityof California, San Diego, said in a recent issue of the

Proceedings of the Na-tional Academy of Sci-ences. The drug halts agrowth signaling enzyme, known as kinase, whichcan foster growth intumors and cancer-associ-ated blood vessels, saidDavid Cheresh, a patholo-gist who led the researchfor the university’s MooresCancer Centre.

The research combi-

The novel approach, which custom designsmolecules, could be a use-ful strategy in developingfuture cancer drugs,Cheresh said.

The hair was found in Greenland in the 1980s andits owners nicknamed “Inuk,” meaning “man” inGreenlandic.

“Inuk’s receding hairline, brown eyes, dark skinand shovel-shaped front teeth are all dictated by his4,000-year-old genetic coding,” said NukaGodfredtsen, who used the genome results as a blue-print to put together a picture of how Inuk might havelooked.

The genome results indicate Inuk’s ancestorscrossed into Greenland from northeastern Siberia be-tween 4,400 and 6,400 years ago, The CopenhagenPost reported on Friday.

Smoking, low IQ top cardiorisk factors

GLASGOW, 14 Feb— Researchers in Scotland saylower intelligence was second only to smoking as apredictor of cardiovascular disease.

The study, published in the European Journal ofCardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, quan-tified the associations of cardiovascular disease andnine risk factors, including cognitive ability assessedusing a standard test of general intelligence.

The researchers found the Top 5 risk factors pre-dicting cardiovascular death were smoking, low IQ,low income, high systolic blood pressure and lowphysical activity.

“It may also be worthwhile for health promotioncampaigns to be planned with consideration of indi-vidual cognition levels,” Dr David Batty of the Medi-cal Research Council in Glasgow and the Universityof Edinburgh said in a statement.

Batty also noted intelligence may well be one im-portant factor behind the place of social class as a fun-damental determinant of inequalities in health.

Batty and colleagues analyzed data collected forthe West of Scotland Twenty-07 Study — a popula-tion study investigating the influence of social factorson health. The researchers looked at data collected in1987 of 1,145 men and women about age 55 andtracked for 20 years.—Internet

Self-cannibalizingcancer cells studied

PRINCETON, 14 Feb—US cancer researchers say theyhave started a major study to determine the role ofself-cannibalizing cancer cells found in tumours.

The scientists from Princeton University and TheCancer Institute of New Jersey said such cells becomedormant and self-cannibalize to apparently survive pe-riods of stress. The researchers said their work mighthelp produce new cancer therapies to stem changesthat render cancer cells dangerous and resistant to treat-ment.

“We want to know: What role is this self-canni-balization playing in the middle of a tumour?” saidPrinceton Assistant Professor Hilary Coller. “To treatcancer, it may be that you want to get rid of this abil-ity in tumor cells, so we’re searching for inducers andinhibitors of this process.”
