“Now You See Me”Charismatic magician Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) leads a

team of talented illusionists called the Four Horsemen. Atlas and his comrades mesmerize audiences with a pair of magic shows that drain the bank accounts of the corrupt and funnel the money to audience members. A federal agent (Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol detective (Mélanie Laurent) intend to rein in the Horsemen before their next caper, and they turn to Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman), a famous debunker, for help.

The buzz: The fi lm relies on directorial sleight of hand to distract audiences from poorly developed char-acters and a scattered plot. But there’s still fun to be had along the way.

Length: 116 min.Show times: 11:25 a.m., 2:05 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 7:30

p.m., 10:15 p.m. at Cinemark.

“Mud”Ellis and his friend Neckbone fi nd a man named Mud

hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud describes fantastic scenarios: he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he plans to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper, who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis

and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true.

The buzz: Bolstered by a strong performance from Matthew McConaughey in the title role, Mud offers an engaging drama that manages to stay sweet without be-ing sappy.

Length: 130 min.Show times: 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday; 4, 7, and 9:30 p.m.

Saturday; 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday at Maiden Alley Cinema.

Woody Harrelson appears in “Now You See Me,” playing this week at Cinemark in Paducah.

NEW YORK — Jon Stew-art is starting a summer-long break from anchoring “The Daily Show,” but it will be no holiday. He’ll be in the Middle East making his fi rst movie.

While he’s away, Stewart

says he’ll miss hosting the Comedy Central fake news-cast.

Stewart will be directing and producing “Rosewater” from his own script, based on a memoir by Maziar Ba-hari. This Iranian journal-ist was falsely accused of

being a spy and imprisoned by the Iranian government in 2009 while covering Iran’s presidential election.

After Stewart signs off to-night until returning Sept. 3, correspondent John Oliver will handle anchor duties on the New York-based show.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In Music City, they say it’s all about the song. Florida Georgia Line is learning the truth in that statement.

The duo of Tyler Hub-bard and Brian Kelley took the early lead with Miranda Lambert at the CMT Music Awards mid-way through Wednes-day night’s show on the strength of their hit, “Cruise.” FGL won break-through video and duo video of the year and were slated later for the night’s most-talked-about perfor-mance with rapper Nelly.

“This is a little over-whelming,” Kelley said. “We’ve got the best fans in the world.”

The breezy, easy-groov-ing “Cruise” pushed the duo to country stardom last year. Their remix with Nelly moved into the top fi ve on Billboard’s Hot 100 pop songs list this week, making it the rare country crossover hit and an early candidate for song of the summer.

Lambert won female video of the year for “Ma-ma’s Broken Heart” and CMT performance video of the year for “Over You,” recorded during the 2012 “CMT Artist of the Year” broadcast.

“I just got a kiss from Lenny Kravitz,” Lambert said as she took the stage for her second trophy. “That was an award in itself.”

Five self-proclaimed devout, conservative Muslim women host the TV series “Building Bridges” on channel A9, presenting the seemingly contradic-tory case against both the female headscarf and Turkey’s turn to secular-ism. A report on Slate.com in May noted that the fi ve are “mostly bottle blonds ... (with) neon lipstick” wear-ing “brightly colored satin pantsuits and T-shirts with designer brand names that stretched over their chests.” “Building Bridges” in prin-ciple supports interfaith dialogue, but guests (noted Slate) “often appear ... with their eyebrows arched in the manner of a serious person certain he is the victim of a practical joke.”

Recurring themes

■ Abdullah Riyaz, 50, was arrested at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India, in April after he appeared to be uncomfortable sitting in the waiting area. Offi cials found four “biscuits” of solid gold in his socks but obviously thought there might be more, and after nature took its course, found Riyaz to be one of those rare humans with the ability to brag that he once excreted gold (eight more “biscuits”).

■ A report circulated in April that an appar-ently Orthodox Jewish man (likely a “Kohen”) had tied himself up, head to toe, in a plastic bag while seated on an airline fl ight — likely because his teachings

told him that fl ying over a cemetery would yield “impurities.” News of the Weird mentioned a similar report in 2001. Airlines have made accommoda-tions in the past, even in the face of criticism that a man in a plastic bag is a safety hazard. (Exceptions to the Kohen belief: Ac-cidental tears in the bag are excused, but pre-punched air holes not; Kohenim unaware of the cemetery overfl ight in advance do not need protection; and deceased family members yield no impurities.)

■ The chairman of the National Showcaves Center in a Welsh national park, aiming to halt a recent downturn in tourism busi-ness, threatened in April to sue the U.K. National Weather Service for its “all too (frequent) ... gloom and doom reports.” The NWS had called for snow and cold weather over Easter weekend, but no snow fell, and the cold weather was tempered by sun and blue skies. (He also suggested adding “health”-type warn-ings to forecasts, e.g., be-ware that weather reports might be wrong.)

■ In New Haven, Conn., in March, police had trapped two car-theft suspects in a multi-family building whose occupants were hiding from the

suspects, thus necessitating urgency in ending the siege. Offi cers ordered a K-9 unit but were told it would be delayed. In a tactic depart-ments occasionally employ, offi cers still threatened to release the dogs imme-diately, and to make the threat credible, available offi cers began barking.

■ Herbert and Catherine Schaible, members of the First Century Gospel Church in Philadelphia and believers in faith-heal-ing rather than medical care, were convicted in 2011 in the bacterial-pneumonia death of their 2-year-old son, Kent. As a condition of probation, they promised medical care for their remaining eight children, but in April 2013, their youngest son, Brandon, died after severe diarrhea and pneumo-nia, again treated only by prayer, and they were arrested — and the other children removed from the home. The medical examiner called Brandon’s death a homicide, and the couple also face fi ve to 10 years in prison for violat-ing probation.

■ Christopher Robin-son, 23, became just one of many recent suspects whose addiction to Face-book did him in. Robinson had never made a single child support payment in the three years since a court order was issued in Milwaukee, and the case had languished over how to prove that he was hiding money. Using other evi-dence for probable cause, the prosecutor got a war-

rant to search Robinson’s private Facebook infor-mation and discovered a candid photograph of him, laughing over a pile of cash.

Updates

■ News of the Weird fi rst learned of kopi luwak in 1993 — coffee beans sold as gourmet because they had been swallowed by certain Asian civet cats and recovered from feces and washed. Since then, as In-ternet news of kopi luwak has spread, it has become no longer obscure, and in April, the environmental activist website MongaBay.com warned that, based

on increased demand, civet “farms” had sprung up in Indonesia and that civets were being caged for their entire lives solely for access to their poop. While none of the main kopi luwak civet species is formally “endangered,” activists warned that populations are dwindling for, said one, “the most ridiculous threat ... to any wildlife I have seen yet.”

■ “Recovered memory” was a popular psychother-apy diagnosis in the 1980s, ultimately responsible for jail sentences for priests, parents and school offi cials after patients suddenly somehow “remembered”

long-suppressed bizarre and vicious (and sometimes “sa-tanic”) sex crimes that never actually happened. Dr. Eliz-abeth Loftus, of the Univer-sity of California, Irvine, and other skeptics have since proven that false memories can be created and are now concentrating on fashioning them for benefi cial purposes — to lose weight, to stop smoking, to curb drinking. An April report in Time magazine noted that “up to 40 percent” of people could be convinced that they had had bad experiences with a certain behavior and that, properly identifi ed, those people could be taught to avoid it.
