From the Pastor’s Corner
God of all knowledge,
you knew us when we were still in our mother's womb.
You know our comings and our goings.
Grant us wisdom to act on the knowledge we have of you,
and humility to admit when we do not know what to do.
Bless our minds with the knowledge of you and how you
sent your Son into the world to show us the way to you.
Bless all students who are preparing to go back to school.
Bless their teachers and aides that help them to learn.
In addition, give us who are parents, the ability to be the
first teachers in the faith we have received from our
parents.
We ask all this through Christ our Lord and brother.
Amen.
CYCLE C 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
A nyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions
cannot be my disciple." It's a modern misconception to
think of Jesus as the ultimate nice guy who only said
things that everybody loved to hear. Of course Jesus is the perfect model of charity
and compassion, but he also gave some very challenging teachings. Today's Gospel is a case in
point. Not many people are thrilled by Christ's lesson today that insists God MUST be first in our
lives. Few are those who love to hear this instruction to renounce our beloved things as well as
our beloved relationships. But Jesus does not mince words. We are to "hate" our "father and
mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters," and even our own life.
It's important to understand that the use of the word "hate" here does not mean to despise
anyone or treat them unkindly. It means rather to prefer something--or Someone--else, namely,
God, to these important relationships. Taken in the context of the Gospel as a whole it is clear that
Jesus is not advocating cruelty or animosity. On the contrary, just a few weeks ago we heard from
Luke 10:27 as Jesus instructed us to love our neighbors as ourselves. However, in putting God
first, inevitably something else must take second place. It is a kind of hatred of family, self, and
"stuff" when we don't allow these things to become mini-gods in our lives. Instead, we keep God
as God.
What does this mean for us? It means not allowing a family member to prevent us from
practicing our faith to the fullest, and also not putting our trust in gadgets and gizmos. It
means, instead, putting all our trust in God, whatever the cost may be.
This day has its foundation in
the union organizing history of
our country and the rise of the
workers to strive for a better
life. Let us remember today all
those who labored to obtain for
us the right to work in a safe
environment with decent wages.
Let us pray... Lord of work and play, we pray to you today.
You worked for six days,
creating all that we see and sense around us.
On the seventh day you rested
and saw that everything you had made was good.
Today on our national day of rest from labor,
we thank you for the gift of leisure,
and remember all who have gone before us,
working hard, long hours without break and good
pay so that we can appreciate the gifts of family and
friends and enjoy safety and prosperity in the work
of our hands.
Amen.

Many RCIA candidates are drawn to the
Church because they have experienced
the warmth and welcome of our parish
community. When you volunteer to
provide a light breakfast snack for RCIA, you
continue this wonderful tradition of hospitality that
embodies our parish community.
RCIA meets in the rectory every Sunday from 10 am
to noon, September 25, 2016 until May 1, 2017, so
as you can see, we need many volunteers and as the
saying goes many hands make light work. No need to
fuss – just drop off muffins, coffee cake or
something light in the rectory a few minutes before
or after going to Mass.
To welcome and support our candidates, please
call
Lisa Dolan at 758-0119
The 2017 Workbook for Lectors
is in the Rectory Office. Please stop by and pick up your copy
during rectory hours or after Sunday Mass. Please welcome Kathy Kelly as the new Coordinator of the Lectors.
Thinking of Becoming Catholic? The parish community of St. Christopher and St. Sylvia invites all adults interested in becoming Catholic – those not baptized, those baptized in other Christian traditions, and baptized Catholics who never received the sacraments of
Eucharist and Confirmation – to join us on a journey of discovery. Find out how Catholics follow Jesus to deepen their lives of faith.
Come and see what the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is all about.
