OCTOBER 13, 2019

Dear Friends, A while back I was doing a little research (checking out the “Ellis Island” website) to see if I could find out when my grandparents came to the United States. I discovered that my maternal grandfather (from County Sligo), Michael Rouse, arrived at Ellis Island on October 12, 1899. That seems like a great day to arrive—Columbus Day. I can only imagine how he must have felt when the ship entered New York harbor after that long journey. There would have been a mixture of feelings—hope, anticipation and anxiety for the future among them. But most certainly he would have felt gratitude for having made the journey safely. The first reading and Gospel today speak of the healings of lepers. And we could easily see healing as a major theme…recognizing the healing come from God. But the readings are also a call to gratitude! Is there anything or anyone we take for granted? We need gratitude for healings, gratitude for forgiveness, gratitude for daylight, gratitude for the air we breathe, gratitude for the earth on which we walk, gratitude for journeys and safe landings, gratitude for family, gratitude for co-workers, gratitude for all the people in our lives. Without this sense of gratitude, our lives and our healings are incomplete. God touches our lives through healing, through mercy, through the created world, through small events. Will we, like the Samaritan leper, give thanks for the love of our God?

Peace, Father Tom

Paz y bendiciones, Padre Tom
