A Message from Fr. Brian For late May, I remember it being a rather cool morning. It was overcast, and threatening rain as I left my parents’ home in Huntington to drive to St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre. I wasn’t used to wearing a Roman collar, and I seem to recall finding it a little tight! I had my gleaming new chalice with me—a gift from one of my mom’s aunts in memory of another relative who had passed away—and my alb, the long white garment that goes un-derneath all the other vestments. I remember thinking this was kind of a lonely way to begin one of the most momentous days of my life—driving alone on a gray morning to meet my classmates for the liturgy of priestly ordination at St. Agnes. But off I went. And later that morning (11 AM was the start time), Fr. Charles Mangano, Fr. John Worthley, and (now Bishop) Andrzej Zglejszewski and I were ordained by Bishop John R. McGann in the midst of a cathedral-full of our family members, friends, teachers, and fellow seminarians, nerv-ous but full of excitement about the extraordinary life we were just beginning. That was thirty years ago this coming Tuesday. Had the world not fallen to its knees under the awful weight of the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m sure I’d be observing the day in a very different way, and that here at St. Lawrence we might already have had a festive liturgy to mark such a significant milestone. But I trust there will be time for that, once we’ve man-aged to re-orient our scattered and uncertain lives toward some degree of new-normalcy. For now, I’m actually quite content to mark my thirtieth jubilee of priestly ordination in a rather subdued way here, with you, the faith community of St. Lawrence, who have been so instrumental in shaping the past 11 years of my priesthood. If there should be a festive Mass and a reception in the Bethany Center at some unknown future date, that’s fine. But not being the flamboyant sort, nor one who seeks out the limelight, I’m actually OK with not having a cake just now, and simply knowing that the people of my parish are holding me in their hearts and their prayers. It has been an awesome privilege for me, flawed and sinful and as I am, to act in persona Christi for you since I first arrived in Sayville, and particularly since Bishop Murphy asked me 8 years ago to accept the role of pastor. Knowing my own liabilities better than I care to admit, I’m all the more convinced that the Holy Spirit is the One providing whatever gifts I may have been able to bring to our community over that span of years. Fortunately for me, I’ve been surrounded from the outset by an extraordinarily energetic, dedicated, prayerful, and hard-working staff, and of course by a faith community of amazing generosity, holiness, and kindness. I am genuinely blessed to have had (and to still have for at least a few more years!) the opportunity to be a servant-leader in your midst. Even these past few months of disarray and uncertainty, pain and loss have sharpened my sense that God is very capable of using each of us—myself included—to accomplish beautiful things, no matter how fore-boding the circumstances may be. So whether you realized it was my anniversary this week or not (and I suspect most did not), please know how grateful I am for you as I observe it, and how intently I pray for our parish and the larger Church as I give thanks for thirty years of priestly ministry. I hear the first verse of Psalm 115 echoing in my mind: “Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory.” How very true.

May our patron and brother, St. Lawrence, pray for us! God love you.

An Invocation for Memorial Day

Loving God, Creator and source of all that is good, we ask your blessing as we gather this Memorial Day, and on every such gathering throughout our country.

We come together to honor all who have sacrificed themselves to safeguard the freedom and prosperity we enjoy as a nation.

For the men and women—many, so very young— who have gone before us and laid down their lives

with unhesitating devotion, we pray with deepest gratitude. Bless them, Lord, and give them the reward of their goodness.

As we remember all those who have offered themselves

for the cause of liberty, justice, and truth, help us to learn from their example of unselfish dedication.

May we recommit ourselves today to upholding all that is best in America,

especially a generous concern for the needs of those who are most vulnerable—at home, and abroad.

Help us to honor the memory of our loved ones by continuing to build a world of lasting peace

in which all people may have a share.

We give thanks for you, our beloved country, so richly blessed among the nations of the world,

and on this day—both festive and solemn— we ask that our divine Master

shed his grace on thee; may he crown thy good with brotherhood

from sea to shining sea. We make this prayer with grateful hearts,

in the name of him who is Lord and Lover of us all. Amen.

VIA LUCIS

Thatʹs Latin for ʺWay of Light.ʺ It is a beau-tiful twist on the Sta-tions of the Cross, where each of the 14 Stations is taken from

the dramatic events from Jesusʹ Resurrection to Pen-tecost. Weʹve recorded this service for our YouTube channel. Please have a look, and pray these ʺEaster Stationsʺ as often as you like.

A PARISH-WIDE ROSARY: Asking the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary We’ll soon be ending the month of May, which traditionally has been a time for special devotion to the Mother of God. As we continue to struggle through these long weeks of isolation, anxiety, prayer for the sick, grief for those who have died, con-cern for our front-line responders, and longing to return to some kind of normalcy, let’s follow the encourage-ment of our Holy Father and ask the powerful interces-sion of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Saturday is customarily a day for honoring the Blessed Virgin, so we invite all our parishioners to pray the Ro-sary each Saturday during May, at 12 noon if possible (of course, whenever you choose to pray is fine!). Let’s join our parish households in this beautiful prayer, on the same day and at the same time, that through Mary’s help and protection the Lord will guide the whole world to healing and renewal.
