“Do you love me?”

A readily observed feature of the description of Peter in the Acts of the Apostles is the remarkable change in his behavior after his encounters with the Risen Christ and his receiving the Holy Spirit. From fearfulness and uncertainty he emerges as a man emboldened, despite lacking formal credentials, to speak with confidence to the members of the Sanhedrin about the true significance of the mission of Jesus, the Crucified One. We hear of Peter and the other Apostles “rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.” The contrast is stark, between Peter’s gratitude for the ‘honor’ of being punished for his loyalty to Jesus, and his craven three-fold denial of Jesus after His arrest. In today’s Gospel, which I have come to imagine as a despondent Peter’s awakening as from a dream sequence (“Did these years in Jesus’ company really happen?”) to resume his former livelihood (“I am going fishing”), Peter is led to discover that there is no ‘going back’, that his life has been permanently affected by his experience with Jesus. The consequence of that experience is the path of discipleship. With gentle but probing insistence, Jesus guides Peter through a three-fold affirmation of his love: I imagine Jesus asking, “Think carefully, Peter: Do you love me?” With this humbling reminder of how weak he had been, despite his brave words, Peter acknowledges that he is only human, and dependent on God’s grace for any hope he has of being more faithful in the future. With Peter’s confession of his vulnerability, Jesus is ready to entrust to Peter his mission: “Feed my lambs …Tend my sheep...Feed my sheep.” Jesus lets Peter know that there will be a price for his fidelity, but that it will be in fulfillment of God’s will. He then invites him, “Follow me.”

What accounts for the change in Peter, except the effect of that ‘infusion’ of the Holy Spirit, the ‘Sacred Breath’ of Jesus that He imparted upon the Apostles and, through them, upon members of the Church through time? Brought before the Sanhedrin, it is by the light of the Holy Spirit that Peter comes to conviction about the truth of Jesus’ identity as the One exalted by God “as leader and savior”. Now Peter understands the mission of Jesus’ disciples as being “witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.” Indeed, it is in intimate dialogue between the Holy Spirit and the soul of a disciple that all who respond in faith are led to a deeper appreciation of Jesus’ identity as Savior, and to a stronger grasp of our own identity as His “witnesses.” We bear witness by how we live, striving, by God’s grace, to be faithful to the teaching and example of Jesus. It is through those efforts that the power of the Risen Christ is made manifest in our world. Embracing St. John’s vision from Revelation, we join with “every creature in heaven and on earth...everything in the universe”, crying out “Amen” in praise and worship of the God Who loves us beyond anything we deserve or can repay.

“Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, ‘Do you love me?’ and he said to him, ‘Lord you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’ ” (John 21:17)

All of us are challenged to show our love for Jesus and others. Discern how God is calling you to use your time in prayer, your talent in charitable works and your treasure to assist those in need. Remember that giving is an act of worship and helps advance the mission of our parish and greater Church. MEMORIAL DONATIONS

We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be donated in memory of someone or to mark a special occasion. A

donation of $10 is suggested for candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Contact the Parish Office.

THIS weekend, May 4-5, we will host a representative from the “Be An Angel” program of the Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children. Ms. Barbara Cortes will present the important impact that Catholic education has on children from low-income families. Our participation will help reduce the numbers of students who are denied scholarship assistance because of insufficient resources. We are invited to take home a brochure and become familiar with the efforts of this worthy organization and to make a donation to help a child in need. Msgr. Shugrue

EXPLORATIONS IN FAITH & SPIRITUALITY Tuesday, May 14, 2019 - 12:45-2:15 and 7:30-9:00 p.m.

(Attend the Session that works for you.) Parish Center, Pat O’Keefe Room Topic: Bishop Robert Barron’s DVD Series: The Mystery of God Perhaps the most difficult question in theology is: Why does God allow evil? If God is all-good and all-powerful, then why are our lives marked with pain and suffering? These are not abstract questions. They go right to the heart of our experience. We have each wrestled with misery, wondering when God would intervene. As with Job, God does not give us answers. He instead offers a person: the Crucified Jesus, through whom God enters our suffering and makes it his own.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED MOTHER

Take my hand, O Blessed Mother hold me firmly, Lest I fall. I grow nervous when I’m walking and humbly on you I call.

Guide me over every crossing; watch me when I’m on the stairs. Let me know that you’re beside me.

Listen to my fervent prayers. Bring me to my destination safely along the way.

Bless my every undertaking and my duties for the day. And when evening creeps upon me

I’ll never fear to be alone. Once again, Blessed Mother,

Take my hand and lead me home. Author Unknown
