A t the end of the month of June, the veteran priests of the Society of

St. Pius X celebrated their anniversaries of ordination to the holy priesthood. The combined happiness and sufferings –Sacerdos et Victima, Priest and Victim - of thirty, twenty, ten years of ministry were naturally brought to memory in a pattern of grace and blessings.

On their respective anniversaries, carrying in their anointed hands those joys and pains, your priests in Ireland ascended with more or less vigour the steps to the altar of the God of their youth, offering the Holy Sacrifice with renewed devotion, and saying the special prayer allowed by the rubrics only in those yearly occasions:

Almighty and merciful God, mercifully listen to my own

lowly prayer. For no merit of mine, but solely because Thy clemency hath no bound, Thou hast called me to minister to Thee in these heavenly mysteries; do Thou make me to be a worthy servant of Thine altar, so that what my mouth shall utter, may, by Thee be hallowed and by Thee be ratified.

For Father Babinet it has been 29 years, 13 for Father Loschi, 16 for Father Nichols, 9 for Father Biérer, and 24 for yours truly, who technically did not ascend the steps of the altar since an unhealed broken ankle has forced me to temporarily celebrate Holy Mass sitting on a chair. Everything is grace! Father Dubroeucq celebrated his 32nd anniversary; Father Couture (like Father Lemieux) shares my priestly years. And Father Van Es, ordained 18 years ago, is a

Canterbury, assisted by two other Bish-ops, possibly from London and Lincoln, to consecrate Rumold. A question arises as to his See as Dublin was not a diocese, as such, at the time. History indicates that Dublin Diocese did not come into being until after the Vikings in Dublin had been converted. The site of the present Christ Church Cathedral, which was formerly called Holy Trinity, is supposed to have been granted to Donough, Bishop of the Irish and Danes by Sitric, Viking King of the Dublin Northmen about 1038. How-ever, in St Rumold’s time, close to Dub-lin there were a number of monastic foundations already in existence, e.g. Clondalkin, Glasnevin, Raheny, Lusk, Swords, etc. and of course, slightly fur-ther afield, Glendalough, Timahoe and others. St Rumold could well have been Abbot/Bishop for any such mon-astery which could be related to as Dublin. Such a background situation would also leave him much freer to go on missionary expeditions later on. As Bishop, he became a noted preacher, often teaching about the Holy Trinity and performing miracles and thereby gaining many souls. He was also noted for his holiness, piety, his charity, his constant labours and vigils. After some years, while at prayer, an angel appeared to him and com-manded him to leave his country and See and travel abroad to foreign lands. He left privately lest he be constrained to remain, first travelling to England and thence to France where he cured a blind man, preached and converted many. He later entered Upper Ger-many (Bavaria), again preached, cured a leper and made more conver-sions. He crossed into Italy and went to Rome meeting with Pope Stephen II about 753. An angel again appeared to him and guided him to go to the

River Scaldis/Scheldt in Belgium. On passing through Lombardy he exor-cised a devil, preached and again con-verted many. He proceeded through Germany and eventually reached Mechlin, near Ulm in Belgium. A Count Ado was ruler in that part of Belgium and St Rumold was wel-comed by him. Count Ado had a single son who had been born late in his life. The son was drowned and the body lost for days. St Rumold directed the search and the body was found after which he restored the boy to life. The Count wished to reward him with hon-ours and wealth but St Rumold merely asked for some desert lands at the time choked with thorns at the nearby Mechlin for a hermitage which later developed into a church and monas-tery. He continued his missionary la-bours at Mechlin for a number of years, preaching and performing miracles. However, some years later when on a short missionary excursion, he was at-tacked and martyred by robbers on the 24th of June 775 and his body was thrown in a river to conceal it. How-ever the body was miraculously recov-ered and Count Ado had it honourably interred in the local St Stephen’s church. Subsequently, the relics were translated to the church dedicated to his memory at Mechlin which is now the magnificent Metropolitan St Ru-mold’s Cathedral Church for the r eg ion . T h i s church also con-tains a gold shrine and the famous bells of St Rumold. Pope Alexander IV fixed the 3rd of July as the feast-day of our saint.

IRISH SAINTSIRISH SAINTS

St Rumold Bishop at Dublin,

Patron of Mechlin, Belgium. Martyr. Feast Days: July 3

H igh in the Sanctuary of the Church of the Three Patrons, Rathgar, Dublin 6, there are 5

figures to 5 Irish Saints, viz. St Patrick, St Brigid, St Colmcille, St Laurence and St Rumold. Most know the first 3 as being the primary Patrons of Ireland and that St Laurence is Patron of the Diocese of Dublin. St Rumold, on the other hand, is more of a mystery to many. However, it appears that he well merits his position as his illustrious life as a Bishop, Missionary and Martyr would indicate. A number of accounts of St Rumold’s Life and Acts are extant in ancient manuscripts and all authorities in Bel-gium, Ireland and elsewhere agree that he was born in Ireland. Pope Ben-dict XIV in 1741 refers to him as one of the great Irish Saints. His feast days, with a special Mass and Office are listed in many authoritive Calendars and Martyologies. His father is said to have been a King David [however, this King David might have been a more ancient ancestor?] in Ireland but the kingdom is not identified but it was probably in Leinster, possibly near Gorey, Co Wexford. Likewise his mother is said to have been a daugh-ter of the king of Cashel, Munster. Most writers do not give any specific details of these matters. Apparently, his parents had long wish for a child and Rumold was only born to them late in life after seeking the intercession of saints and the local

B i s h o p G u a l a f e r /G a l l a g h e r . However, it was pre-dicted that the hoped for child would not live a lay l i f e b u t would follow a religious path. From his youth Rumold was attracted to spiritual values and pursued the reli-gious way of life. He thought little of worldly values and comforts and di-rected his efforts to Heavenly achieve-ments. As a young man he rejected the world and wished to dedicate himself to God and his works from an early age. He was loved by all because of his extraordinary virtue. He showed pa-tience and an unobtrusive persever-ance in pursuit of God’s work and wanted to be a true servant of God, regardless of whatever sacrifice would be required. He would embrace the Cross, quit friends and the comforts of home to serve the Divine master. When he had reached adulthood, his mother wished him to marry and to follow a worldly career in his father’s footsteps. Rumold refused and his fa-ther, recalling the predictions made before he was born, accepted his deci-sion and supported his vocation. Shortly afterwards, Bishop Gualafer died and the Canons could not agree a successor from among themselves. They prayed for guidance and an angel is said to have directed them to choose Rumold, which they did. In his humility, Romuld at first refused the call as be-ing unworthy but was convinced to accept. One tradition indicates that the canons called on the Archbishop of

priest forever in Heaven.

Each anniversary moves us to recall with eternal gratitude the figure of our father in the priesthood, Archbishop Lefebvre. Both Father Babinet and I had the immense privilege of receiving all the orders from him. But had the Archbishop died without episcopal succession, it is reasonable to say that our three confreres in Ireland would have never been ordained. And this applies to 2/3 of the priests of the Society in the world. The Archbishop knew well his duty, and the day of the consecrations, twenty years ago, he explained the reason for his valiant act. It was not an attempt to create a parallel church that lead him to the ceremony of 30 June 1988, nor an act of defiance to the Holy Father, nor a schismatic ending to a history of pertinacious disobedience by “the rebellious prelate of Ecône,” as the media dubbed him since. His words still resound: “As for me, “I am offered up in sacrifice and the moment for my departure is arrived” (II Timothy IV, 6). I had the call of souls who ask for the Bread of Life, Who is Christ, to be broken for them. “I have pity upon the crowd” (Mark VIII, 2).

It is for me therefore a grave obligation to transmit the grace of my episcopacy to these dear priests here present, in order that in turn they may confer the grace of the priesthood on other numerous and holy clerics, instructed in the Holy Traditions of the Catholic Church.”

I find it fitting to bring here the public testimony of one of our priests, given before Cardinal Edouard Gagnon at the end of his visit to the seminary of Ecône, December 1987:

“If I am a priest, it is thanks to Archbishop Lefebvre. It is he who has drawn us to enter Ecône, because we had found here the fidelity to the Tradition of the Church. This was what we wanted; this was what confirmed our vocation.

“It was Archbishop Lefebvre who, during all these years, has confirmed our Faith, encouraged it and, through our priestly ordination, has truly become our father in Jesus Christ. And we have a somewhat infinite gratitude towards him. It is all our honour and dignity and our most profound joy to be able to work with him, to be in this little army of those who have but one

desire: to spread day after day the Social Reign of Our Lord Jesus Christ, to be worthy dispensers of the grace of Jesus Christ in the whole world, into the hearts who are so hungry and thirsty for the eternal truths.

“Throughout all these years of apostolate, it was always Archbishop Lefebvre who has supported us, encouraged us, and who was by his own fidelity the model of our own fidelity to the priesthood. And I think he is the model of fidelity for many of the faithful and especially for those who are married.

“You understand, Eminence, why we are so firmly convinced to remain strongly united with our Founder and to continue at all costs the work for which the Good Lord has raised him—we cannot see it otherwise—to fulfil this great mission for Holy Church, which is also a great mission for the pope. We are absolutely convinced that one day it will be openly recognized that Archbishop Lefebvre has rendered very great service not only to the Church, but also to the pope, even though the evidence is often obscured and not readily acknowledged.

“You have been able to witness

the fruits of Tradition in our different houses. You have seen the work that has been undertaken. I dare then to express a desire, a wish: do all you can, Eminence, that we may have the concrete means to preserve these fruits, to continue this work and develop it. We do not want anything else than to be instruments in the hands of the Blessed Virgin to restore the reign of her Son, of His Cross, that He may reign thus through and by the Holy Mass in the world.”

And these, my dear friends, are the exact sentiments which unite today all the priests of the Society, have no doubt about it.

Please join your prayers to our thanksgiving, asking with us through the intercession of the Immaculate and Sorrowful Heart of Mary, Mother of the Eternal Priest, Mother of all priests, our own fidelity and the gift of many holy vocations from Ireland.

Wishing you and your dear ones every blessing during the month of the Precious Blood,
