The Liturgical Week Today’s Readings

Bearing the Right Kind of Fruit

Readings for the Week

First Reading — The vineyard of the LORD is the house of Israel (Isaiah 5:1-7).

Psalm — The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel (Psalm 80).

Second Reading — God’s peace will guard your hearts and minds (Philippians 4:6-9).

Gospel — The kingdom of God will be given to those who will produce its fruit (Matthew 21:33-43)

The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

Today’s readings focus our attention on vineyards. Isaiah’s song concerning his friend’s vineyard begins with inspiring and poetic images of an idyllic vineyard where the choicest harvest is expected. Instead, the vineyard yields wild grapes, which causes the owner to abandon it. The psalmist cries out to God, asking that God once again take care of the vineyard, which is the house of Israel. The parable told in today’s Gospel offers a stern warning that those who commit treachery in the hopes of attaining personal wealth will be “put . . . to a wretched death” (Matthew 21:41). Jesus warns his listeners not to act like the murderous tenants in the vineyard. Instead he exhorts them to produce the kind of fruit that will lead them to the kingdom of God.

Monday: Jon 1:1 — 2:2, 11; Jon 2:3-5, 8; Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Jon 3:1-10; Ps 130:1b-4ab, 7-8; Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Jon 4:1-11; Ps 86:3-6, 9-10; Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Mal 3:13-20b; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Jl 1:13-15; 2:1-2; Ps 9:2-3, 6, 16, 8-9; Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Jl 4:12-21; Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12; Lk 11:27-28 Sunday: Is 25:6-10a; Ps 23:1-6; Phil 4:12-14, 19-20; Mt 22:1-14 [1-10]

Please join us on October 14, 2017 at the 5:15 pm Mass,

when Bishop James F. Checchio will install Msgr. Randall J. Vashon

as the new Pastor of St. Bernard of Clairvaux.

The Installation Of A New Pastor

On Saturday, the 14th of October 2017, the family of St. Bernard jubilantly welcomes the chief shepherd of our local Church that is in Metuchen, the Most Reverend James F. Checchio. Together we will give thanks to Almighty God on this 163rd anniversary of the parish’s legal incorporation. On this occasion, Bishop Checchio will further expresses his paternal care addressing us with these words, “My dear friends, because I am aware of your pastoral needs and I am confident of Msgr. Vashon’s qualifications for the office of pastor, I present him to you as your new pastor.” This confidence comes after the discernment of our needs alongside the many names submitted by priests themselves or nominated by the personnel board.

The Rite of Installation of a pastor takes place in the presence of the bishop or his delegate. After the introduction of the new pastor to the faithful the bishop gives the homily followed by the presentation of the parish clergy, staff, councils, and trustees to the new pastor instructing him to “share this ministry in a spirit of mutual trust, common prayer, and genuine concern”. The Rite concludes with Monsignor leading us in the profession of faith and then making an oath of fidelity. Since we know Msgr. Vashon comes to us from his well served tenure as pastor of Immaculate Conception School in Annandale, you may be curious why the Holy Mother Church requires a pastor to make a profession of faith and oath of fidelity before taking canonical possession of his new assignment.

Pastors, seminary professors, candidates for Holy Orders, and men who upon their creation as Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church are some of the examples of those who must make professions of faith and take an oath of fidelity. With the beginning of new responsibilities these acts remind the new pastor and his congregation that his role as pastor is not a role of individual governance of the parish, but that his responsibilities are to “adhere with religious submission of will and intellect to the teachings which either the Roman Pontiff or the college of bishops enunciate when they exercise the authentic magisterium, even if they proclaim those teachings in an act that is not definitive.” He is servant and steward not lord and master himself. So, this responsibility and leadership is not of the individual whim of Randall Vashon but of the One, Holy Catholic, Apostolic Church that is present here in Bridgewater whom Msgr. Randy serves as priest and shepherd. On the role of the priest, the famed theologian Rev. Karl Rahner, S.J. reminds us that the faithful and loyal priest does not act nor speak as his own but is a man called and sent. He writes:

“The priest is not an angel sent from heaven. He is a man chosen from among men, a member of the Church, a Christian. Remaining man and Christian, he begins to speak of you the Word of God. The word is not his own. No, he comes to you because God has told him to proclaim God’s Word. Perhaps he has not entirely understood it himself. Perhaps he adulterates it. But he believes, and despite his fear, he knows he must communicate God’s Word to you. For must not some of us say something about God, about eternal life; about the majesty of grace in our sanctified being? Must not some one of us speak of sin, the judgement and mercy of God? So, my dear friends, pray for him, carry him, so that he might be able to sustain others by bringing to them the mystery of God’s love revealed in Jesus Christ.”

So, let us give thanks to Almighty God for sending us a wise and charitable priest whose concern is not for himself but to “sustain others by bringing them the mystery of God’s love revealed in Jesus Christ.”

Vocation Spotlight

Let’s remember to keep our diocesan seminarians in prayer.

Introducing one of the newest seminarians:

Michael Wood Attending: Immaculate Conception Seminary, Seton Hall Hometown: Scotch Plains, NJ / Age: 41

Michael received a BA in Mathematics from Rice University, TX, and a MS in Computer Science from Rutgers University. After growing more in his intentional discipleship as a Catholic Christian during his college and post-college years, Michael prayerfully began to discern religious life. Drawn by his attraction to sacred art and architecture and his love of the liturgy, Michael entered the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius in Chicago. After living in this religious community for a year, Michael returned to the work force in the Tri-State area. He remained very active in his local parish as a Lector, choir member, and was involved in Young Adults ministry.

Over time in prayer and spiritual direction, Michael began to feel the call to diocesan priesthood. He began attending discernment events offered by the Diocese of Metuchen and was accepted as a seminarian to begin formation at Immaculate Conception, Seton Hall. Regarding his vocational call, and the vocational call given to every Catholic, Michael reflects, “We need to be a lively sign of contradiction to the emptiness of secularity, proactively showing the world who we are in Christ.”

The Finance Council – an advisory or consultative body to the Pastor in matters pertaining to the ordinary and extraordinary matters of financial administration. The Council shares, with the Pastor, the responsibility for prudent administration of financial affairs and the formation of its policies and procedures in service to effective management of parish assets.

The Stewardship Council – provides a systematic way of infusing the theology and practice of Stewardship into the life of the parish, identifying opportunities for members to exercise their gifts for the betterment of the parish and community.

The Pastoral Council – devoted to prayer and the study of church documents and other sound resources, as well as parish centered reflection on that study; collaborates with the pastors, clergy and staff in the work of ministry. From the Pastoral Council evolved five commissions and their ministries:

Welcome to the Parish Community of St. Bernard of Clairvaux

Parish Life at St. Bernard Sacramental Life at St. Bernard

Parish Membership

Welcome Newcomers! So that we might provide for all of your sacramental and pastoral needs, we would like to officially welcome and register you in the parish. If you haven’t already done so, please call the Parish Office to begin your registration process.

Parishioners are reminded that we can best serve you if we have accurate information in our Parish Census program. Please call the Parish Office with any changes in your address, phone number, family status, etc. or if you notice any misinformation in any correspondence you might receive from us. Catechetical Formation

Students in grades Pre-K through 8 are provided Catholic instruction and sacramental preparation by our Catechetical Formation staff and parent volunteers. Parish membership is required for enrollment in our program. Please call our Office of Catechetical Formation to register your child for classes. Youth Ministry

Our youth are an active part of our ministry here at St. Bernard. All high school teens are welcome to attend Tuesday youth group meetings in The Lighthouse, on the third floor of the Parish Center, from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm.

Please call Sean O’Brien at ext. 804 or email Sean at [email protected] for details. Please join us! Young Builder’s Club at St. Bernard

As part of our Youth Ministry program, we offer our Young Builder’s Club one Saturday each month for children aged 3 to 10, with a parent. Using the K’nex building toys, the group encourages teamwork and social interaction. Each meeting opens with prayer and song. Watch the bulletin for upcoming events.

Baptism

Expectant and adoptive parents are required to attend our Baptism preparation class. It is best to call the Parish Office at least four months before your child’s birth or in the case of adoption, upon completion of the adoption process. The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults

Individuals who have never been baptized, baptized Christians from other denominations, and baptized Catholics who have never received the Sacraments of first Eucharist and Confirmation, and who are interested in becoming full participants in the Catholic faith are invited to call the Parish Office to begin the Inquiry process. The Sacrament of Reconciliation

Saturday: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM, or by appointment The Celebration of the Eucharist

Monday— Friday (Chapel): 8:00 AM & 12:10 PM (12:10 PM suspended in July and August)

Saturday: 9:00 AM (Chapel); Vigil 5:15 PM

Sunday: 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM

Holy Days of Obligation: 8:00 AM, 12:10 PM and 7:30 PM The Celebration of Christian Marriage

Arrangements with the Church for a wedding should be made approximately one year prior to the desired date. Participation in a Diocesan Pre-Cana program will assist couples in their preparation for the sacrament of Matrimony. Catholics who have been away from the Church and the Sacraments need to re-establish their Church and Sacramental life as a pre-requisite for marriage. Sacrament of the Sick - Homebound

We encourage you to call the Parish Office to make arrangements for either the Celebration of the Anointing of the Sick or for the Eucharist to be brought to the sick, the elderly, and the homebound.
