BULLETIN BOARD

by Patricia Reed

Gather your Scarab memorabilia to submit to the cen-tennial time capsule. Your imagination is limitless! Thisis your opportunity to leave a legacy for future Scarabswho might wonder who the members were and what ac-tivities occurred during the centennial year. The capsulewill be sealed and "buried" in our archival storage areafor future generations to "discover". A designation willbe placed on the outside that it should be opened for the125th (year 2032), 150th (year 2057), and 200th (year3007) birthdays - yes, it IS a little optimistic. One mightask, "Why not bury the capsule in the garden?" Because, when the time comes to unearth it, either the capsule orthe location might have been forgotten.

Did you know a time capsule exists in the building'scornerstone? It cannot be unearthed unless the buildingis demolished, which, by the way, the members thoughtwas a future certainty in 1928. Older buildings in Detroitat that time were demolished rather than rehabilitated orrenovated. Members wanted future generations to under-stand what the organization that erected the building wasabout.

Items archived in the centennial capsule will include2007 Scarab Buzz issues, gallery exhibition guides, newsarticles, a copy of the Scarab Club book, invitations toevents, posters from events, WDIV Vote for the Best in-formation (Scarab Club was voted #1 Art Gallery in theDetroit Metropolitan Area), a copy of the Governor'sproclamation for the centennial, a photo of themselves, sketches, short memoirs, photos of Scarab functions, po-ems, etc. If you choose to submit an art form such as aphotograph, poem, thought, sketch, etc., please indicatethe name of the artist and date on the item. All photo-graphs should be labeled on the back with the event nameand date and names of people appearing in the photo.

At the Boars Head dinner on December 8th, guestswill be provided an index card to record a thought for thecapsule. Members and the community can submit itemsat anytime beginning with the date of this publicationthrough January 20, 2008. Items can be dropped off atthe club or mailed to: Attention: Archivist, CentennialTime Capsule, The Scarab Club, 217 Farnsworth, Detroit,MI 48202.

society, membership, and expectations. This abilityto grow and change has shown the belief that mem-bers have maintained in their mission of service andthe unity of the membership.

...With ceremonies to celebrate its history, themembers and officers of the Scarab Club will re-member the vision of many people and the hoursand years of commitment that have brought thegroup to this point. Fittingly, as they look to thepast, they will also be casting an eye to the futureand to the many ways in which the Scarab Club willcontinue to reach out in our state...

A LASTING gjn TO rue SCARAB CLUBBy Christine Renner

A new addition to the Scarab Club was unveiled during the September 7thexhibition opening. The work of Scarab Club board member and Hamtramckbased mural artist Dennis Orlowski now graces the wall above the 1st floorlobby doors. Recently I asked Dennis to write down his thoughts about themural.

"The bricks and the Scarab glass window reflect the front entrance brickwalls and window on the wood doors. The brick ledge under the Scarab win-dow contains three objects. On the left a traditional painter's palette andbrushes which relates to the club's working artists. On the right is a framedinvitation from a 1915 holiday party which represents the social life of theclub. In the center is an ancient Egyptian scribe's palette with reed brushes. The scribes were essential to Egyptian culture because of their ability to readand draw hieroglyphics. This seemed to make a connection not only with arthistory but with the club's Egyptian scarab symbol. The scarab was verytopical and trendy in 1912 and especially in 1922 when the tomb of KingTutankhamen (King Tut) was found.

The location of the mural over the lobby doors lent itself to a last experi-ence before visitors left the club. Club members were very supportive as Iworked - their input and caring contributed to the mural's success."

Dennis Orlowski takes a moment to pose for the camera as he completeshis mural. Dennis donated his time and energy to create a lasting gift tothe club in celebration of its centennial. The Scarab Club thanks Den-nis for all his hard work during a very hot August in a building withoutair-conditioning! (Renner/2007)
