Choir Festival at our Cathedral

This took place on Saturday, October 18th, organized by the ´´Voz y

Memoria´´ choir, directed by Julio Herrera.

This is the choir in which Fr

Enrique sings.

Also present were the choirs from the Faculty of Sciences (UDELAR),

directed by Rodrigo

Faguagua; the Redonda

Confusa choir, directed by

Esteban Tashdjián; and

Giraluna, the children´s

choir, directed by Adrián

Posada (this choir began in a child-care center in Montevideo

and has had public performances at the Zitarrosa Theatre and

also on television.).

There were about 100 choristers in the 4 choirs and a big audience with about 220 people present.

The repertoires were varied: traditional Irish, Spanish, Tribal African, a variety of Latin-American: Charly

García, Vinicius, Alberto Wolf, Larbanois Carrero,

Victor Heredia, Mario Benedetti & Alberto Favero,

León Gieco and themes which ranged from the

spiritual to the intelectual, touching on folklore,

carnival folklore and human rights.

Fr Enrique welcomed those present on behalf of

Bishop Michele Pollesel.

At the end of the concert, there was a time of

sharing/refreshments for the choirs, organized by the

´´Voz y Memoria´´ group, in the Lafone Hall.

The entrance ´´fee´´ was a non-violent toy which the

organizing choir will give to the child-care Centers where

Frs Tito Castaño and Alejandro Manzoni of the Anglican

Church are in-charge.

THE RUDDER James 3.4 " Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. ¨ Renaming IAU Millan Center (24 hour center) now called THE RUDDER We moved to Calle Salterain in September and we were thinking it would be better to stop calling the Center after the street where we are and to reflect a little on our identity and history.

The Rudder is a Center operated by Promoción Humana of the Anglican Church of Uruguay since August, 2013.

The first thing that comes to mind is that our Center gives women and children who come a refuge and a place with some stability. Even though it is a transitional place, it is better than where they came from. It is possibly a passage to a better situation.

The average stay is 8 months.

The New Testament passage James 3.4 reflects on how to be a Christian. The writer uses two

metaphors - of a ship and a horse - to strengthen his warning about how much harm an individual´s tongue can cause. When we allow God to live in us and lead us we can overcome the storms that come our way. We staff this Center as witnesses of Christ's love. There are few people living in boats, the course may be pleasant, but sometimes we are wind- tossed in storms and people get sick. Many, feel safe for the first time in their lives and are able to self-disclose to others. Our "weakened" state shows how we need others and God. We can also shipwreck – going back to where we came from and following the same path. The Rudder is an opportunity. Take it or leave it. Women, children, adolescents, educators, skilled facilitators are the crew; decisions are made; we wait for the opportune time; we are vigilant. We could think of a boat that only goes to one port, but this is a touring boat that takes you to different ports, where different "contributions" are added for the course load of each family. We may or we may not have a clear goal, but perhaps the important thing is the movement toward change. Families living at The Rudder need to accept themselves, to think and to evolve in other dimensions. We thank God for this opportunity. The Rudder IAU Coordinator Cristina Crovara

WELCOME to URUGUAY, Kirsten!!

Seventeen young adults - including six who will serve for a second year – representing…

18 Episcopal Church dioceses are serving as missionaries in the Young Adult Service Corps (YASC) for the 2014-2015 term in locales throughout the Anglican Communion.

YASC is a ministry for Episcopal young adults, ages 21 - 30, who are interested in exploring their faith in new ways by living and serving in communities around the Anglican Communion.

The Rev. David Copley, Mission Personnel Officer, noted that while the day-to-day duties of each placement vary, the experiences of the YASCers are life-changing. “YASC brings young adults into the life of the worldwide Anglican Communion and into the daily work of a local community,” he explained.

Each YASCer maintains a blog, detailing their service, reflections and adventures. Elizabeth Boe, Episcopal Church Global Networking Officer and a former YASC volunteer who served in Tanzania, shared that blogs provide an ideal means for connecting with others throughout The Episcopal Church and around the world.

Kirsten Lowell, Diocese of Maine

Kirsten is serving as an administrative assistant in charge of special projects in the Diocese of Uruguay.
