The Monthly Newsletter of Holy TrinitySt. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church The Voice Volume : 15 Number : 8 Month : August 2015 Saint Kosmas of Aetolia, or Patrokosmas, as he is called, is a figure in both church and national history who in the 18th century cast his light upon the path which the Greeks would follow a little before the outbreak of the Struggle for Liberation. He was the son of devout parents who brought him up accordingly, and he came from the village of Mega Dendron in Ae- tolia. His aptitude for learning took him to the school run by the Vatopedi Mon- astery on the Holy Mountain of Athos, where he studied under teachers famed for their learning. When the Athonite Academy fell into decay, the young Kostas (his name in the world) went to the Philotheou Monastery. There he was tonsured a monk and given the name of Kosmas and zeal- ously engaged in many ascetic practices. At the request of the fathers of the Monastery, he was ordained a priest. St. Kosmas had a burning desire to be of service to his brothers in Christ who were suffering so many hardships. The enslave- ment of many years with the subsequent degradation of life, ignorance, and the decline into barbarity in behavior were the scourges of the mass of Christians. The reflections of St. Kosmas on this situation led him to go out to the people and begin a series of preaching tours. As his thoughts matured, with the permission of the fathers of the Monastery, around 1760 he left for Constantinople, where he received the blessing of the Patriarch Seraphim II. St. Kosmas began his preaching from the enslaved Capital itself. He then went to Nafpaktos, Mesolonghi and other areas of Greece, returning to Constantinople in 1774. With the permission of the new Patriarch Sophronius II, the Saint resumed his apostolic task. He returned for a little while to Athos, but his love for the Church’s flock led his steps to Thessaloniki, Veria, and other parts of Macedonia. From there, he moved on to Acarnania and Aitolia, as far as Arta and Preveza. Because of the large crowds which followed him, the Saint used to preach on open plains, always with the permission of the local bishop and aga (a local Turkish official). His words were simple, but filled with the Holy Spirit. It was his custom wherever he was going to preach to tell the people to construct a wooden cross. He would then place a stool which he carried with him against the cross and preach standing upon it. The cross would remain as a reminder of his preaching. The Saint urged the Christians to build schools so that their children could learn about the Faith and be well-grounded in Christian piety. He would speak to them about the divine services of the Church, explain to them the value of repentance and confession, warning them against sin and urging them to lead lives of goodness. Saint Kosmas of Aetolia, or Patrokosmas, as he is called, is a figure in both

church and national history who in the 18th century cast his light upon

the path which the Greeks would follow a little before the outbreak of the

Struggle for Liberation. He was the son of devout parents who brought

him up accordingly, and he came from the village of Mega Dendron in Ae-

tolia.

His aptitude for learning took him to the school run by the Vatopedi Mon-

astery on the Holy Mountain of Athos, where he studied under teachers

famed for their learning. When the Athonite Academy fell into decay, the

young Kostas (his name in the world) went to the Philotheou Monastery.

There he was tonsured a monk and given the name of Kosmas and zeal-

ously engaged in many ascetic practices. At the request of the fathers of

the Monastery, he was ordained a priest.

St. Kosmas had a burning desire to be of service to his brothers in Christ who were suffering so many hardships. The enslave-

ment of many years with the subsequent degradation of life, ignorance, and the decline into barbarity in behavior were the

scourges of the mass of Christians. The reflections of St. Kosmas on this situation led him to go out to the people and begin a

series of preaching tours. As his thoughts matured, with the permission of the fathers of the Monastery, around 1760 he left

for Constantinople, where he received the blessing of the Patriarch Seraphim II.

St. Kosmas began his preaching from the enslaved Capital itself. He then went to Nafpaktos, Mesolonghi and other areas of

Greece, returning to Constantinople in 1774. With the permission of the new Patriarch Sophronius II, the Saint resumed his

apostolic task. He returned for a little while to Athos, but his love for the Church’s flock led his steps to Thessaloniki, Veria, and

other parts of Macedonia. From there, he moved on to Acarnania and Aitolia, as far as Arta and Preveza.

Because of the large crowds which followed him, the Saint used to preach on open plains, always with the permission of the

local bishop and aga (a local Turkish official). His words were simple, but filled with the Holy Spirit. It was his custom wherever

he was going to preach to tell the people to construct a wooden cross. He would then place a stool which he carried with him

against the cross and preach standing upon it. The cross would remain as a reminder of his preaching. The Saint urged the

Christians to build schools so that their children could learn about the Faith and be well-grounded in Christian piety. He would

speak to them about the divine services of the Church, explain to them the value of repentance and confession, warning them

against sin and urging them to lead lives of goodness.

As with the Apostles, St. Kosmas’ preaching was often confirmed by miraculous signs. The Saint

was admired and even feared by many Turks, and hated by many Jews. They spread unfounded

accusations against him and slandered him to Kurt Pasha, to whom they offered money if he

would put St. Kosmas to death. Kurt Pasha conspired with the hodja of the village of Kolikontasi

in Albania that a trap would be set for St. Kosmas. On the pretext that the Pasha wished to see

him, they took the Saint to a remote spot and hung him on August 24th, 1779. His murderers

stripped the sanctified body of the Saint, tied a stone to it, and threw it into the river. The local

Christians looked for his corpse, but could not find it. In a miraculous manner it rose to the sur-

face and was pulled out by Papa Markos, the priest of the All-Holy Theotokos of the Presenta-

tion Monastery, which is near Kolikontasi, and buried it at the back of the sanctuary. Many

other miracles followed the martyr’s death of the Saint, and he was quickly established in the

mind of the people not only as a martyr but as a true apostle.

APOLYTIKION: By teaching the Divine Faith, thou hast richly adorned the Church and become

a zealous imitator of the Apostles; for having been lifted up by the wings of divine love, that

hast spread far and wide the message of the Gospel. O glorious Kosmas, entreat God that He

grants us His great mercy.

KONTAKION: Having led an irreproachable life on Athos, like Moses thou hast been deemed worthy of God's manifestation;

wherefore truly thou dost gladden the Church exceedingly by thy deeds and thy God-inspired words, O Father Kosmas, having

contended for which, thou hast been adorned with a double crown.

MEGALYNARION: Rejoice thou emulator of the Apostles, teacher and luminary of the Church; rejoice thou divine cultivator

of piety, associate of Martyrs and peer of Angels.

Greek Patients Dear Parishioners,

By the Grace of God our community, once again, offered financial assistance and moral support to a family who, for the fourth

time, was in Cincinnati for an extensive and very costly intestinal operation at our Cincinnati Children's Hospital. The Department

of Gastroenterology is headed by Dr. Alberto Pena, internationally known gastroenterology surgeon. Patients from all over the

world visit our Children's Hospital for his knowledge and skill in the field of congenital malformations. Through our community's

generosity, which includes the indispensable help of Father Bill's encouragement in passing the tray, our Mothers Club, our Philop-

tochos ladies and our very generous private donors we have once again helped a family in relieving some of the financial anxiety

faced by them in the preservation of the life of their child.

Health care is extremely expensive for those coming from outside of the country. The Greek health care system has, up to now,

paid for the therapy of these very serious congenital diseases (surgeries costing $400,000 to over $500,000 per patient), but is un-

able to offer any help in transportation, food, expensive equipment and medications needed to sustain the health and life of the

child. All expenses are left to the families. These families include those working in Greece whether they are Greeks, Albanians,

Syrians, etc. Our most recent patient is from the island of Crete. You will find their letter of gratitude on the bulletin board in the

hall area. To borrow the words of Mrs. Kapostanio, mother of the patient, "may we always be in a position to give and make a dif-

ference in the lives of those less fortunate”.

In Christ's love,

Kiki Christofield

Annual Car Raffle

Early August represents the midpoint between our Parish’s two significant fundrais-ing events. Panegyri is now a few weeks behind us, of course, along with the crowds and aching joints. Meanwhile, the Annual Car Raffle is now on the horizon, only a few weeks away – details in the ad below.

The goal of this year’s Raffle is, adapting Frank Cook’s words, to do again what we did last year, only better. The outline of the event is indeed the same as before: food, drink, prizes and, most of all, fun.

What’s better? The answer is found in our solutions to past challenges. For instance, we’ve always faced a capacity challenge. Lowering the maximum number of tickets sold improves the chances both of winning and of seating everyone.

We’ve also improved the affordability of the two Grand Prizes while maintaining a high level of appeal. This is especially true of the car prize, where moving to a pre-paid lease allows us to offer a higher-profile make and model than in years past.

Given the contribution that the Car Raffle makes to funding the ongoing needs and ministries of our Parish, we hope you will support the event by purchasing a ticket. We also need volunteers to help with the event itself – please contact Co-Chairs Lew Parsenios(513-232-9425) or Peter Aamodt(513-582-7261), if interested.

CHURCH ORGANIZATIONS OVER FIFTY CLUB…Ann Jonson

Many of us enjoyed the Italian food we had at Maggiano’s in May. After some deliberation with them, we were able to get the private room upstairs and order from the menu. They nor-mally only allow you to get family style food when you have a private room. The lady I talked with said we can go back again.

Thank you to Pat J. Zaferes for donating the cake in honor of Tina’s birthday. It was delicious.

Congratulations to Nicoletta Frankenstein and Elliot Pohlmann on their marriage in May. Nicoletta is the granddaughter of Kosta and Tina Petropoulos.

Also, congratulations to Miranda Watzek and Peter Triantafilou on their marriage in July. Peter is the grandson of Rita Trianta-filou.

At our May meeting, we concluded our year-end business. We selected the following three charities for the year: Bethany House, Dress for Success and the St. Nicholas Shrine. We then elected our Daughter of the Year, Mary Morgan. This award is given to the sister who has done the most for the chapter dur-ing the year. The next election was for Penelope of the Year, Vera Manolakas. This award is for a lifetime of service in Daughters, church, other organizations and the community. The recipient of our Viola Christopher Scholarship is Christina MacAskill. The rest of the meeting was devoted to planning our events for the coming year.

In June, three of us attended the District Convention in Canton, Ohio. I am pleased to announce that our chapter won the Most Philanthropic by Percentage award. Angela Storch was awarded the Outstanding Secretary award. Vera Manolakas was awarded District Penelope of the Year award. This is the highest honor that can be bestowed on a sister at the District level.

Several sisters' children received academic scholarships from our district Buckeye Scholarship Foundation. They included Zachary Nicholas, Zoe Storch, Christina MacAskill and Eleni Panagiotopoulos. Christina was also awarded an academic scholarship from the Daughters at the national level. Congratu-lations to all of them!

Please mark your calendars for our Wine Tasting event on Octo-ber 10. This year we will have a wine expert and the wines will be paired with the appetizers. There will also be an auction and a surprise guest.

Have a good rest of the summer!

“....and they brought the Children unto the Lord.” (Matthew 19:13-14)

With back to school fast approaching, so is the start of our 2015 - 2016 Sunday Church School year. We would like to recognize and thank Cara Chryssovergis for her leadership, time and tal-ents in serving as our former Sunday Church School Director. The Religious Education Team (RET) has been formed to lead the efforts of our Sunday Church School Program. Team mem-bers are: Peter Aamodt, Presvytera Anastasia Cassis, Trish Fiel-den, Vivian Kapourales, Peggy Kehayes, Amanda Kontopos and Dena Mathes. The Religious Education Team serves under the guidance of Father Bill and Father William.

The purpose of our Sunday Church School is to have our chil-dren grow into informed Orthodox Christians to be able to prac-tice their faith. This is achieved through participating in the Di-vine Liturgy and attending Sunday Church School on a regular basis.

Our Church School offers classes for students ages 3 years to high school senior. The curriculum focuses on a variety of sub-jects including Orthodox feast days, the life of Jesus, what we see and do in Church, the saints and apostles, the Sacraments, and the Divine Liturgy. In addition, we have a class for ADULTS called, "Living the Orthodox Life". The intent of this class is to refresh understanding of Orthodox essentials, learned years ago in SCS, and to explore the Orthodox faith with respect to life.

SCS begins Sunday, September 13th. As a reminder, the Divine Liturgy begins at 9:30 am. Families are encouraged to sit in the first eight pews on the left side of the Nave which are reserved for Sunday Church School. Classes begin directly following the distribution of Holy Communion. Classes end at 11:45 am.

REGISTRATION - Each year, we do require new and existing stu-dents to electronically register for Sunday Church School. To register, simply click on the following link: 2015 - 2016 Sunday

Church School Registration. Registration is also available from the Church’s website, under “Youth Ministry” > “Sunday Church School”.

VOLUNTEER - Please consider sharing your time, and talent as a Sunday Church School teacher, substitute teacher, a parent classroom volunteer or member of the Religious Education Team. Please email the Sunday Church School inbox at [email protected] to volunteer!

Thank you for your continued support of our Sunday Church School program. We are looking forward to a year of building fellowship within the classrooms and guiding our children to grow into informed Christians!

In May, the new Philoptochos Board was elected. Our new Board members are: Georgianne Gaz, President; Vera Manolakas, 1st Vice Presi-dent; Elaine Snyder, 2nd Vice President; Mary Morgan, Cor-responding Secretary; Eleni Zaferes, Recording Secretary; Tina Zaferes, Treasurer; Irene Kanaris, Assistant Treasurer; Loy Jonson, Diane Kevin, Helen Nicholas, and Carol Ste-fanopoulos. We congratulate them on their election and look forward to their leadership of Philoptochos over the next two years.

PHILOPTOCHOS…Georgianne Gaz As part of the National Philoptochos “Feed the Hungry” Pro-gram, members of our Philoptochos Chapter prepared a chicken dinner on June 9 for residents and families at the City Gospel Mission on Dalton Street near the Main Post Of-fice. The new facility just opened up in the Spring; the din-ing room and kitchen are bright, clean and large. Our mem-bers served 120 meals that evening. After serving the meal, the Philoptochos members sat at the tables and spoke with the people they had served. It was very humbling and re-warding. Our next dinner at the City Gospel Mission will be Tuesday, August 11, and we invite members of the commu-nity to join us.

Parish Council President's Message - by Jim Gelis

It is the midpoint of the year, and results from the 2015 Panegyri are coming in. The final tally will be completed by

August for a report to the Parish Council and the entire community. We should all be thankful for the beautiful

weather we had on Sunday of that weekend, which brought the crowds and helped offset Friday’s decline. Without

the turnout on Sunday, the festival numbers would have been disappointing. A big thanks to everyone who volun-

teered time, donated goods and services, and paid for the sponsorships. On behalf of the Parish Council, I extend a

sincere thank you to Eugene Nicholas and Chris Chryssovergis for their leadership in chairing the Panegyri. I also

want to thank Operations Co-Chairmen Jim Betas and Paul Misali for assuming this critical responsibility when the

need arose unexpectedly. I realize there are many individuals whom I should mention here, my space is limited.

Please know that your support is greatly appreciated.

While we all can take a much deserved break, we must look ahead to the next task at hand. Sales of tickets for the

upcoming Car Raffle are underway with 25% already sold at the Panegyri. You don’t want to miss out. So contact

Lew Parsenios or Peter Aamodt on how you can purchase a ticket. These fundraising efforts help supplement our

Stewardship program each year. For example, a portion of the proceeds from this year’s Panegyri paid the remain-

ing balance on our line credit that we used to finance replacement of the old HVAC units in 2014. Even as we con-

tinue to implement our long term maintenance plan with scheduled capital repairs, we must also consider how we

will cover daily operating expenses. Look for more information in the coming months in preparation for the 2016

Stewardship campaign.

Enjoy the summer with friends and family, but get ready to start the next endeavor. We’re in the second half of the

year, and our work is just getting started.

Panegyri 2015 Reflection - by Eugene Nicholas

This year’s Panegyri, like many before it, was full of memories that will be with me forever. First, there was great sadness with the passing of our General Chairman, Frank Cook. I missed our daily conversations about what was going well, and how we could make next year even better. Although Frank can never be replaced, the team of lead-ers who stepped up this year to fill his shoes would have made him proud.

As many of you know, I like to organize and plan for everything I do. This year all of the work paid off in a wonder-ful way. For the first time, we passed all of our inspections on Thursday. It was in our plan and was quite a relief when it happened. We had all day Friday to prepare for opening without the stress of someone telling us what needed to be fixed. By 5:00 pm on Friday, we were ready. Fr. Bill and Fr. William gave an opening prayer, and we honored the memory of Mary Trohanis and Frank Cook. Panegyri 2015 was underway.

Unfortunately for us, the weather man had something else in mind, which was not in our plan. The warnings of se-vere storms, which never occurred on our property, scared most patrons away. The few that attended made their purchases and left. It was not the experience that we wanted for our patrons. Friday was not a typical day, but there is always Saturday. Thank God!

The weather man once again gave a fairly unclear forecast on Saturday. Although we were supposed to get some sun in the afternoon, it never materialized. I have never seen so many jackets and long pants at a Panegyri. The pa-

Attendance

Although this year we had a light crowd of approximately 17,000, over the past 10 years more than

200,000 guests have visited our Panegyri!

Our continued prayers and thanks to our Lord for allowing us to host and share this wonderful

event with our friends and neighbors!

trons came in at a steady pace and we managed to have a very good Saturday. Again, thank God! I can’t say this enough because our Parish is truly blessed in every way and we must be thankful.

Sunday, the forecast was for the perfect Panegyri day! This time the weather man got it right. Our guests poured in, and we finally had the opportunity to really host a Panegyri. I know we host this as a fundraiser, but in our hearts it is about sharing our faith, food and culture with the community.

The Panegyri ended with Fr. William on stage giving a closing prayer. A short while later, the volunteers gathered for an after festival meal under the large tent. It was a wonderful sight to see more than 100 volunteers sharing a meal and enjoying fellowship after working so hard. Our volunteers are the best, and we appreciate their dedica-tion and commitment to making the Panegyri a success.

I know many of you are curious as to how we did financially. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the weekend turned out very well. Including pre-revenue, weekend revenue, and post revenue our overall gross sales are $412,000. I am still paying bills, and working on the overall expenses. The profit looks to be close to our budget and the margin looks very good. I will give a full report at the Fall General Assembly in October.

Thank you to all the chair people and volunteers who made our 41st Panegyri a success!

Budgeted Goal - $430,000

7-20-15 Update:

Pledged - $327,276- 77% of Goal Received - $238,957 - 56% of Goal Operating Expenses - $427,480 This thermometer is located in the bulletin board in the hallway leading to the gym. It is updated as often as possible. We are now halfway through 2015, and we have only pledges for 77% of our goal. Our minis-tries are dependent on your stewardship. The goal set in the budget by the General Assembly is a conserva-tive one. It only covers about half of our operating budget. The other half is raised through the Panegyri, Car Raffle, candles, trays and any other donation we may receive. The Parish Council and Stewardship Committee ask that if you have not yet made a pledge for 2015, please consider doing so today. Let’s make 2015 our best year ever!
