Here is your chance to demonstrate an act of kindness
There are a number of current and former senior WSIA Members, who are unable to attend WSIA functions due to their age and/or disabilities. Maybe you would like to pick them up and bring them to a general meeting, or a
concert, or bring them to the club on a Friday for some pub grub. Maybe you can just pay a visit and spend a little time with them. Whatever the case may be, if you are interested in giving a little of your time you will find it to be a
time not wasted. Acts of kindness are a life-changing blessing.

While St. Patrick’s Day may be a few months away it’s not too soon for us to prepare for this special day. We look forward to the culmination of this day which of course is the grand parade. The WSIA is proud to be a participant with the largest unit in the parade – including our impressive drill team, marching units and award-winning float. Being the largest unit in the parade comes with substantial costs. To defray these costs, we publish an annual souvenir program booklet showcasing our sponsors and supporters. We hope you will consider participating. The booklet will be distributed at major club functions and will be viewed by hundreds of club members and other supporters beginning March 3, 2018 and forward. Featured are the 2018 honorees:
Queen – Courtney Kuntz Woman of the Year – Maureen Cseh
Man of the Year– Bill Luther Co-Volunteer of the Year – Bill Rice
Co- Volunteer of the Year – John Quien Co- Volunteer of the Year – Tom Lucas
The West Side Irish American Club congratulates the 2018 honorees of the United Irish Societies: Grand Marshall – Sheila Murphy Crawford; Mother of the Year – Joan Reali; Inside Co-Chair – Noreen Halley; and Outside Co-Chair – Linda Burke. Our History; the Lads By Peggy Calvey Patton
Volunteer: a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task; a type of individual that wants to leave the world a better place because of their actions. The young lads of the WSIA club were the recipients of such a dedicated group of volunteers. I’ll start with the late Jack McDonough who was responsible for the “Colonial Boys”. In 1976 America was celebrating the Bicentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the WSIA felt they should also honor the day, so they created a contingent in colonial uniformed boys to march in the parade. Jack McDonough, who grew up in St. Thomas Aquinas Parish on the east side became an active WSIA member after he moved to the Old Brooklyn area. This man, whose parents came from Mayo and Galway played the piano, organ fife, tin whistle and the flute, so naturally he gravitated toward the musical side of the club and especially the lads in junior and senior fifes. The Colonial Boys were formed from the younger ranks and what a sight they created in their war of independence uniforms of red, white and blue with peaked campaign hats playing their fifes. The approximately 20 young soldiers captured the feeling of young America. There was no finer way to honor our adopted country. These boys brightened the days of many senior citizens with numerous visits to nursing homes and their impromptu social calls to various pubs near St. Patrick’s Day showed the west side of Cleveland that the Irish heritage had been passed to the next generation. After many years of involvement with the WSIA fifes, Jack attended a meeting in the early 80’s at the newly formed Irish American Club East Side. He was delighted to see many old classmates from St. Thomas Aquinas and soon realized that the new club was desperate for a musical leader. Jack followed his sense of duty and felt that he should give his time and energy for the betterment of the Cleveland Irish on the east side. He stayed with them until his untimely death at 55 years old. His 33 year old grandson, Tom Davis is now leading the musical duties at the Irish American Club East Side. Because Mary Hayes had four of her six sons marching with the junior fifes, she was asked to help form the new unit of the Colonial Boys. Jack picked the elite members of the Fifes and along with Art McChrystals’s group of young drummers, the unit became a reality in 1976. The striking Revolutionary uniforms were made by a tailor on Madison Ave and the unit existed for more than 15 years, winning many awards. Prior to forming the Junior Fifes, many of the lads blended into the Senior unit and marched with their fathers. The lads initial contact with the fife was conducted by Mary Hayes. She was a full-time teacher raising six sons, but she always spent every Sunday afternoon from the beginning of the year to St. Patrick’s Day coaching the boys into their musical futures. She would gather small groups around a table and patiently go over the notes until they were able to play a tune. She never raised her voice and I never heard a single child say anything negative about her. She did this for approximately 30 years. Mary says that she loved those afternoons with her boys and was glad to give something back to her beloved club. The sight of Tony Mulloy leading his charges, be it at the club, at mass or on The Avenue was always so inspiring to me. It always made me think of Irish heroes marching behind him. So many more were there helping in so many ways, I just don’t have the space to honor their efforts. As I said earlier, our lads and lassies are very lucky to have this club and the people who volunteer to connect them with their ancestral traditions.
