PRESERVING THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE MARCH 2012

YPHS MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

The War of 1812, which engulfed the United States, Great Britain, her Canadian colonies, and the First Nations of the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi regions, was a dramatic and formative event in North American history. In this illustrated presentation, Carl Benn explored the war’s major themes, from its complex origins, through its confused campaigns, to its misunderstood conclusions in order to clarify the course of the conflict and its larger historical meanings. http://northtorontohistoricalsociety.org/ Dr. Benn, Chair of the Department of History, Ryerson University, was formerly Chief Curator of the City of Toronto’s Museums and Heritage Services He has written extensively on the War of 1812.

York Pioneers part of Luminato This year's Luminato celebrations include recognition of the bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812. The Thomas+Guinevere creative team are putting together a remarkable public art display to tell the stories of 200 civilians who witnessed the War of 1812. The plan i s t o p i t c h 2 0 0 t e n t s , e a c h c o n t a i n i n g a creative work, within the walls of Fort York about each of the 200 historical figures that the team has chosen to represent. The display is called The Encampment and will be seen during Luminato, from June 8 to 24. During the research phase of this project, York Pioneers sent stories about civilians who witnessed the War to Thomas+Guinevere including the childhood memories of the Rev. John Carroll, stories about Mississaguas who helped defend York in 1813, the Black community in York and the Mary Fitzgibbon's 1896 article about the preparation of a flag for the Third Regiment of the York Militia. David Raymont, a member of the York Pioneer Board, applied to be a creative collaborator to develop one of the displays that will appear in The Encampment. His application was accepted and he will be working with the Thomas+Guinevere team so that the York Pioneers have a role in making The Encampment come to life. Over the coming weeks, David will be talking to members of the York Pioneers about plans for the display. To learn more about Thomas+Guinevere and The Encampment, visit the city's official website for the bicentennial www.toronto.ca/1812 "

PRESERVING THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE MARCH 2012

FROM THE YPHS ARCHIVES BY JOHN MARSHALL, ARCHIVIST

Over the years the York Pioneer and Historical Society has erected or co-sponsored several plaques marking historic sites. One of the more interesting projects was much more than a plaque – it was an entire building! In 1954 Gooderham and Worts, in co-operation with the YPHS, built a reproduction of its famous windmill, which had been a landmark on the Toronto waterfront from 1832 until 1859. The model, scaled down to about 30 feet in height, was erected by the lake at the foot of Parliament Street. (The original location was not available, as it was occupied by a Gooderham and Worts office building.) It was constructed with bricks from a building of the same period as the original windmill, and bore a bronze plaque with the following inscription:

THIS REPLICA STRUCTURE COMMEMORATES THE

GOODERHAM & WORTSWINDMILL

ERECTED 315 YARDS N.E. BY N.OF THIS SITE IN 1832.

THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE WAS THE EASTERN LIMIT OF THE

“OLD WINDMILL LINE” ON WHICH THE FIRST PLAN OF THE CITY OF

TORONTO WAS BASED IN 1834.IT IS STILL USED BY SURVEYORS.

ERECTED BY GOODERHAM & WORTS LTD.

IN CO-OPERATION WITH THEYORK PIONEER AND HISTORICAL

SOCIETY9TH APRIL, 1954.

Sadly, the replica was demolished just a few years later to make way for the eastern extension of the Gardiner Expressway. An interesting sidelight is that William E. Hanna, YPHS President at the time, refused to attend the unveiling of the plaque. He was a teetotaller who did not approve of the Society’s association with a distiller.
