Statement of the Problem

Philippines is known for its achievements when it comes to cultural, tourism as well as in

design industries. However, the country has:

Insufficient facilities that will focus on the design development

Demand for Filipino designers and entrepreneurs to lead the category

Requires a development for programs and projects that will enhance the sustainability of

the country’s cultural and product design works

Necessity to provide amenities that respond to the goal of protecting and sustaining the

design values of the people

Needs facilities which open a break for decentralization of the product design awareness

and opportunities and facility that will cater more design activities

MAIN GOAL

The goal of this study is to create and provide a Design Center that will serve as Philippines’

Satellite Design Hub in the region catering facilities and services involving cultural design and trading not only

for the local settings, but also internationally. It aims to improve the amenities of the original design center of

the country as it will be situated in highly urbanized city which will draw a niche in the trading industry, as well

as in tourism in the country.

OBJECTIVES

•To build a mixed-use “Satellite Design District/ Hub” composing of the facilities of the Design Center,

Museum and Library, Events Place, Business Center, Indoor and Outdoor Knowledge Park.

•To provide “neighborhood character” between the edifices for more functional and efficient building

complex

•To stabilize sustainability through the intended environment using “intrinsic approach”

•To design the edifice in respect to sustaining the “cultural environment”

•To create a “playground for design and creativity”

Goals and Objectives

Nature of the Project

Design Center of the Philippines is an agency of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) which

initiates and give birth to the promotion, enhancement, and development of design of Philippines-

made products. Design Center of the Philippines is mandated to increase the quality and

competitiveness of Philippine products through design.

Functions of Design Center of the Philippines:

Develop product designs

Undertake applied research on materials manipulation in aid of product development

Provide design and technical consultations for designers

Product manufacturers and producers, as well as to entrepreneurs

Conduct technology demonstrations

Promote the Industrial Design profession and the value of design

Provide product identification, research, and development services to the private sectors

Organize seminars and workshops on product design and development and exhibitions

Publish product design-related materials

Conduct continuing research on product and design trends and processing technologies
