Matters of the Heart

I have had the blessing of attending many preached retreats since I gave my life to Christ. Some of them have been memorable in that they really had impacts in my life. Memorable retreats, like good sermons, are hard to come by. For me, a memorable retreat is the one that leaves an imprint in my heart, helps me gain clarity in my understanding of God and improves my spiritual life. The impact of the last two parish missions or retreats at Sacred Heart Church will remain with me for a very long time. For instance, since I listened to Fr. Michael 'Tega Akpoghiran, OP, explain the connection between parts of the Mass and the actions of Jesus during his passion, I have become more conscientious of what I say and do during the Mass. Sometimes, his words re-echo in my ears while I said the Mass. During this Advent retreat, Fr. Stephen Coffey’s talk focused on “An Advent Journey into the Heart of Christmas.” “Sometimes,” He said, “the longest journey can be from the head to the heart.” He explained that unless the journey is earnestly made in our hearts, it’s hard to make it in reality.” Using Prophet Isaiah, John the Baptist, Joseph and Mary he ex-rayed our hearts pointing out that the ultimate goal of spiritual or Christian life is a union between our hearts and the heart of Jesus – an alignment of hearts. “It is not what you do on the outside, but what you do on the inside” that matters to God. Fr. Coffey goes on to cite St. Augustine who said that, “Mary conceived Christ in her heart long before she conceived him in her womb.” Here is the point Fr. Coffey really wants to get across to all of us: unless the journey of Advent is made in our hearts, it will never be made in reality; unless Christ is conceived in our hearts, he will never be in our Christmas. Christ is conceived in our hearts at the point of metanoia (i.e., conversion, repentance or a life-changing encounter with Jesus). This is the role that St. John the Baptist plays. He is the voice that cries, “Prepare the way for the Lord…” Mark 1:3. “The way” is the way to your heart. To experience metanoia or a life-changing encounter with Jesus, you have to open your heart and ask Jesus to come in. Ask and you will receive. Pray, every day, “Jesus, Son of God, come into my life today.” Repeat this prayer as often and as long as possible and you soon have the most transforming experience of your life.

Classes this week: There are no classes this week due to CHRISTMAS BREAK. We wish our families and volunteers a restful, healthy and blessed holiday season. Classes will resume Sunday, January 7th. There is no mass attendance during the holiday break. Mass attendance will resume the weekend of January 7th. We sincerely hope to see all our families at mass during this important season of the year. Congratulations to second year students who successfully completed the first confession interview. Thank you to the families who provide support and participation in making sacramental preparation and important life event. Reminder to first year students and their families that first year interviews begin January 7th. Mass and class attendance will be checked, completed student work given, family information checked, second year registration and information for baptism given. Students are expected to recite the SIGN OF THE CROSS, ANGEL OF GOD, LORD HAVE MERCY. Thank you to parishioners who have donated generously to our program throughout the year. We are in need of ASTROBRIGHT RED, PURPLE AND MULTI-COLOR copy paper (from Office Depot). We also could use a welded, two-sided library cart (gently-used or Amazon). For December 17th: 1. Share a time when you clearly felt your actions and words were a reflection of Christ. 2. What were some of the ways the church service today reflected Christ’s light in deed and symbol?

This past week, like many of you, I have been contemplating life in the wake of the fires. I have heard many people share many different thoughts and of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. This past weekend we took our teens away from the fires to Frazier Park for their retreat and needless to say it was a huge success! As we got there I stressed to the teens how important this weekend was especially in the wake of the ongoing fires. We take life for granted and need to slow down from time to time and be thankful for what we have. It shouldn’t take a natural disaster for us to evaluate life, however this should be a constant thing we do in our life. I challenged my teens as I challenge you all now, take time in your life to appreciate what you have and look to see what’s truly important in your life.

An Italian Catholic Federation Thank You The Italian Catholic Federation (ICF) Branch 169 wishes to thank the ICF members, Thursday Morning Bible Study members, and various parish members for their generous support of our toy drive. Mary Poe, who headed our

drive, collected over 200 toys and monetary donations. The ICF supported the first Annual Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Holiday Party in support of their Thalassemia patients. As always, the Knights of Columbus members came through with a very generous monetary donation and toys. Thank you, again, to all who helped us in this very important endeavor.
